Close to the vest with a bomb here and there. If his defense is doing the job he lets them do it and he doesn't take chances on offense unless he has to.
Great win by the way!!

Tressel won a National Championship....if that's what it takes to get it done, I'll take it.

If thats what it takes to win then just do it. I like seeing Torrence with 29 carries. The defense is solid. We need to stick with Willoughby and have the O build off of him. Remember 91 we didn't have a great paasing game, but we had a QB that made very few mistakes and great backs and a very good defense. And, we have a better kicker now.

Yeah I agree. I like Leno though he does a great job. I dont mean to be negative but there is no reason JT GJac and Massey shouldn't be in every offensive play they're to explosive not to be.

When your defense is STRONG, you let them control the game. It worked to perfection tonight. Play field position, and let the opposition make a mistake that you can capitalize on !!
A strong defense , and solid special teams , will win MORE games than trying to "outscore" an opponent !!:weightlift:

IMO our defense is strong against the Run and very suspect against the pass with a good QB. Won't be able to play a game close to the vest like that against really good teams who pass (Iggy, Mentor).
Work hard this week!
Shock the world!

The "Tressel is so conservative" cliche has its limits. Both Stacy and Tressell smart football coaches. They know the strengths and weaknesses of their team and coach accordingly.
Tressel with Troy Smith, Ted Ginn, Robiskie and Gonzo ran a much more open offense than in his earlier years, even the championship year where he had Clarett. If he got a big play from Krenzl, it was icing on the cake.
Stacy doesn't have Huth this year. He knows it. Of course the offense is limited with a new QB, new kids on the O-line and a new (transfer) as your primary rusher. I don't see why anyone is suprised about a slow start with all the new faces and the schedule. Very tough situation.

"our defense is strong against the run"???????????
I am not sure if we were watching the same game Friday night. I seem to recall Youngstown having good success up the middle, not huge gains, but consistently 3, 4 and 5 yards using pretty basic plays without great running backs. As usual, coaches are too smart for themselves and try to get cute rather than sticking with what is working.
As for our passing game and Stacy's Tressel like play calling, two times, maybe three, I recall 1st down isolation passing plays which did nothing but cause our offense to be in 2nd and long. Once a defense has the opposition in a position which dictates play selection, they have the advantage.

We don't need Torrence on Defense.
The O line needs help no matter how you look at it !
I would try Yoder and Rose on that line.

As good as McGuire was, if he had this O-Line we wouldn't be talking about him today. All of his patented spin moves were downfield after the line already opened up holes. Don't get me wrong 91 backs were very good, but they weren't as good as what we have now, if they used properly. Torrenence, Turner and Herring.

Properly used our RB's are overall better now than 91. But, you are right about the O-Line.
First off--- it has not been a better combination of RB's at Massillon since 1991. I may be a little biased but Travis was by far the better runner considering the vison, power, and speed and Myricks is a close second. If Travis had 29 carries in a game he would of put up 350+!!! Falando is fair better than KJ on any given night with the ability to run inside/out while KJ is a solid speed runner but we give him the ball in traffic. No way you can even compare the 2 backfields. The 1991 line had been blocking together since midget and were flat out dominating---DETERMINATION is always a factor at every position!!!
2007--- we are playing ball control offense which is OK but we need to stop the run fair better than we did Friday night. Our defense sits back and waits for the offense to attack and I would like to see more blitz packages and drop drop Irvin in pass coverage when he is our best pass rusher! Run defense better than the pass coverage??? No way-- our corners are fair better than solid and Hildreth is a manchild attacking the ball and Pettis is improving his coverage every game and is a hitter as well!
Offense---JT need some touches--get him the ball on screens and flair passes to use his athletic ability. I didn't mind the 29 carries by Torrence because he averaged 5.7 a carry. Why stop feeding him?---but we need to get our other game breakers a few more touches.
I think Mentor is tough but if we can control Tanski's running ability we cn win!! BEAT MENTOR!!!!

I agree that the defensive key is to learn from last year and keep a guy on Tanski and/or pressure him more.
If we had Turner and Torrence in the backfield (T-n-T), it would be comparable in some ways to Falando and Travis. We need to kick Torrence to the outside more- look at what he did when given that room on Friday.

People can spin it how they want but no backfield was better than 1991!!! 3500 yards rushing and that aint counting back ups, E. Wright's 500 or so,etc,...!!! How many 2nd halfs did falando and Travis actually play? Many games they were not needed because they carved up 200+ and 5/6 Td's in the 1st half!
Torrence, Herring, and JT aint seeing the same backfield in 2007 from what I have seen so far so until they do the comparisons are NONE!!!

I can't believe that I haven't seen ANYONE comment about Matt Rose's play in that game Friday night. I thought he was unbelievable. That kid played so hard to the point he seemed to be playing while injured. Didn't anyone else notice that? He is quite a player.

Monte, Monte, Monte.... Torrence and Turner are both better than Ashcraft. If fact, Leon Ashcraft was better than Falando. Travis was probably the best back I've seen at Massillon in many many years. But, I still believe talent-wise this year has more talent. If they were being used properly we would see that.

But it isn't always about Talent...it is about the "other things"...Again, I don't disagree with you about the weapons that they are...but it is the little things (that make up the big part of the game) that they might be lacking...

Whew, thats a tough argument MC. We are 2-2 w/ an offense borderline anemic and that 91 backfield set all-time records that may never be broken. And you can take the QB's out of the equation - we certainly cant say we were any less predictable in 91.
Granted the O-Line was great in 91, but honestly imo Travis or Folando do more than 16 rushes for 25 yards all alone or simply by accident, lol.

You can say JT and Torrence are better than Ashcraft if you want but the numbers do not lie!! travis had 1976 rushing and Falando had 1352! most backs do not compile those numbers in 2 seasons. Talent and production are 2 differant animals. DT is a beast and JT has all the tools but 1991 they are not!!!!
Just a few stats for travis:
5 times Stark COunty player of the week
all-ohio
all-midwest
all-american
302 and 5Td's against McKinley
4/5 200 yard games

Torrence had plenty of yards last year and damn near everybody on here is calling for Turner to be at RB. I'm hoping that those calling for Turner are basing their request on talent.

They are both better than Ashcraft. Besides, my point is, that this years crop of RB's have more OVERALL talent than 91. We all know what Mcguire did in 1991 and what Ashcraft did was based on defenses keying on Mcguire. Ashcraft rarely blocked. Talent Level: 1. Mcguire 2. Torrence 3. Turner 4. Ashcraft 5. Herring. Wright was only a part-time back late in the season, but if you want to include him, I would put him between Ashcraft and Herring. If you want to base them on production then there would be some changes, but my position is TALENT only!

That year Massillon was 7-3 . One of the wins was a 42 -13 beatdown of mckinley with Mcquire getting 300 yards in the game. The first game the tigers beat ellet 28-7. The 2nd game the tigers beat toledo st.john.s 42-21 and in the Iggy game we lost because of a missed extra point 14-13. See I may be old but my memory is pretty good. The 91 team would be 4-0 right now and we would be averaging 30 points per game easily!!
