Just heard on the radio that Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin was killed in a diving accident when he was struck in the chest by a Stingray Barb. He was only 44 and leaves behind a wife and two children. Details at the link below:

Terrible news, especially for the wildlife enthusiasts. At least he died doing what he loved.

what a freak accident. those aren't usually fatal... but, what luck to get one right in the heart. very sad.

did anyone see NBC this morning... as they showed the interview from 2 years ago. he was responding to the critics as they complained about him holding his kid as he fed the alligator.

i feel for his family. very, very sad.

I saw this, and it is sad, but as the article on AOL said, he died doing what he loved doing.

He was very passionate in what he did to make the world a better place for wildlife. He will be missed by many.

I thought that was in rather poor taste to dredge that topic up at this time. He has done alot in the area of wildlife conservation. He will be missed.

i dont feel to bad for him but i do kind of feel bad for his family like you knew it was only a matter of time till something like this happened to him. If you ever seen his show and the way he handles animals like snakes alll you do is think to yourself "man that dude is going to die and im gonna laugh when it happens"
although i didnt laugh you cant pretend he didnt have it comming i mean he jumps on snakes and crocs.

I feel very bad about the death of Steve Irwin. I loved watching that guy. He was very entertaining, especially when he was on Leno. You could tell this guy was a great human being with a big heart and did MUCH for animal conservatism. It's really quite a shame as he left behind an 8 year old little girl and a 2 1/2 year old little boy. No one's death should ever be made light of.
God bless his soul and comfort his family.

kamd...I agree completely. The man was passionate about what he did, and even more so about his family. Something won't seem quite right on Animal Planet without Steve Irwin. He will without a doubt be missed by many world wide.

Butler...You're right in that they shouldn't have dug up the video with his son. It has NOTHING to do with the man and what he stood for as a whole.

RIP Croc Hunter

There have been three reported human deaths from stingrays in Australia in the past 50 years. What a freak thing!

I agree longtime. I really hope you can't find it on the web anywhere. Reports state that the footage is in the hands of the police for evidence.

What a shame, and what a freak accident. My son, 11 is pretty upset over this. He LOVED that guy and watched him on the Discovery Channel all the time. Man, what a void there will be on there without him. RIP, Steve Irwin!! Crikeys!!

Your right, what a freak accident! Man, I can remember snorkling in various places and seeing stingrays. They always say, don't provoke them or get near them and they won't bother you. What a shame for his family.

I was just reading Yahoo news about how this will affect all the kids who watched his show. I know my 9 year old boy LOVES Steve Irwin, and watches him all the time.

I did read today that Irwin was able to pull the stinray barb out of his chest before he died, but it wasn't soon enough to stop the damage.

From Yahoo News: "Steve Irwin had such a profound impact on children that many parents believe his tragic death will be a landmark for kids in the way the deaths of John F Kennedy and Princess Diana were for adults.

Many younger Australians were grieving for the Crocodile Hunter as if they had lost a member of their own family, parents say.

"This guy has been in our lounge room for years," said one Sydney mother who has been consoling her tearful primary schooler since breaking the news the TV wildlife enthusiast had died after a stingray barb punctured his chest while filming off the Queensland coast.

She said her nine-year-old son Louis had repeatedly asked, "Is he really dead?" and then cried throughout the evening."

Daniel, 11, asked: "Why did it have to be Steve Irwin? Why couldn't it be someone older like Sean Connery?"
