View Full Version : "When the powerhouses go dim"

From Todd Porter's latest prep notes column (the usual TP disclaimer applies):

"These are crazy times in Stark County. Powerhouse high school football programs McKinley and Massillon are a combined 1-5. A few minutes after Massillon lost to Division II Normandy, Tigers head coach Tom Stacy didn't need to be Carnac to know what was around the corner. 'There's going to be a lot of finger pointing out in the community," Stacy said, "but we have to stay together.' The finger pointing didn't start days later. It started hours later. A quick tour of a few message boards revealed what some of the shut-ins on these forums do with their time. "

He continues...
"This is the third week of the season, people. Three weeks does not a season make. I'm betting a homemade ham and cheese sandwich that Massillon (1-2) or McKinley (0-3) gets in the playoffs, and I'm throwing in potato chips that says the Massillon-McKinley game will have a bearing on which one gets in."

There's more. It can be read here.

To understand Mr. Porter’s comments you need to realize the world he lives in is changing. The business he works for (The Repository as well as newspapers in general) is dying a slow death. He and his fellow journalists are no longer the gate-keepers of news and opinions. With the advent of the internet people are able to get their news in real time from thousands of frontline sources. We are free to choose who to believe and how much creditability to assign them, picking and choosing from a smorgasbord of information options. We are no longer held captive to the official line from a handful of “official” media outlets. He feels threatened that someone who has not been indoctrinated in journalism school is able to offer their opinions and perspective to the world, much like the Catholic Church felt threatened as monks hand copied and controlled the distribution of books at the advent of the printing press. Todd is no longer THE voice, but only one of many, which may be bad for him, but it's good thing for society as a whole.

The real issue I have in the piece is the Devoe not playing defense.

I'm a friend of Coach Stacy's and support him 100% (yes, still), but what does his answer mean? "It's an in-house issue"?

Hey Devoe, get in at LB. No? Then go back to Canton South.

First of all, if Stacy told DT to play LB and he said "NO" then DT should be gone. Now, since Stacy didn't do anything to DT for disobeying the coach, they both need to go.

jackiesmom--

I guess that's why there are so many know-it-all expert and experienced "arm chair" coaches who post comments on this forum, right?

Hey MAN2MAN:

It doesnt take a brain surgeon to realize that we have NO SUCCESS running the ball up the middle ALL the time does it??

Stacy is not any better than all of us if he doesnt see that.. anyone of us could go on the sidelines and say hey you, just run up the middle oh and yea throw the ball every game or so

He feels threatened that someone who has not been indoctrinated in journalism school is able to offer their opinions and perspective to the world, much like the Catholic Church felt threatened as monks hand copied and controlled the distribution of books at the advent of the printing press.

Sorry to post off topic, but since you mentioned it, show me genuine documentation that the Church felt threatened by the printing press. It certainly and rightfully warned and still warns of mis-use of all gifts we have (in the case of books, like the internet, mis-using it to propogate error). But it never felt threatened by it- did you ever see the Gutenburg Bible? And those monks who did the hand-copying (and later starred in Xerox commercials) were Catholic, weren't they?

And before you mention Galileo, he was censored not because of his scientific discoveries, but because he leapt out of the science into theology and made theological assertions about his discoveries- assertions that could not be completely (and still are not) justified by the science. The Church is not against Science- in fact, it's all for coming to grips in our feeble way to describe God's creation.

Sorry for the :offtopic:

I don't think any of us really know the true story about Devoe's not playing defense. I certainly wouldn't rely on Porter for any facts and, if it is an "in-house" issue, why should we expect Stacy to tell us the truth?

Personally, although the defense is not the weak part of the team, having Devoe's talents in there can only strengthen it. But it would require his leadership as well as humility too (to recognize he's not the only star in that unit!).

What the hell does THAT mean? As far as the sandwich and chips bet forget. Make it a Corona and I'll take on all comers. Massillon and/or McKinley in the playoffs. What a freaking joke.

At this point, let's say we beat Urs., Buchtel, Hard., and McK....we are 5-5 at best.
(at this point I don't see wins over Urs., or warren). We don't get in the playoffs.

McKinley will lose to another FED team (maybe 2 between Perry, Boardman, Hoover, and GO) and may beat us. They are looking at 6-4 at best. I don't think that is good enough to get in either.

We may not have a win over a team with a winning record., unless Middletown does something. Boy, those Canada and DC teams sure look good now.

Since when do players tell coaches that they don't want to play certain positions. Football is made up of players who are unselfish and do what is good for the team. Every position except for kicker on the team should be up for grabs. What is with players aurgeing with each other on the sidelines?

It's called lack of discipline and no team control. Having said that, I'll let you ascertain as to whose responsibility that is.

Well, talking about the media. I'd like to know what has happened to Sam Bourquin on WHBC. He hasn't been on for a week or more and someone said that he is in the hospital. Does anyone know how he is doing?

Bro, if you read some of the stuff this guy writes on Tigerslair and yappi you would go out to Lake Mead take a look, drive to freaking Hoover dam and jump off. There are UNBELIEVABLE posts out there from him.

(There, moderators I've toned it down)!!

It's a health related issue. He'll be back on the air soon. He's been missed.

Todd, it's quite obvious you read this board. If your statement proves to be false, you'll be making a lot of sandwiches. I've already taken a vacation day, anticipating the first round of the playoffs. I'll join you and we can give them to a needy at a church, soup kitchen or the like. That's making the best out of a bad situation. Message me and we'll work out the details.

(For the record, I hope he's right in Massillon's case.)

:furious:
Agreed. IF DT is told to play D he needs to do as he's told or hit the bricks. And IF Stacy lets him get away with it, he'll continue to lose control of the rest of the team.

Pull together guys, and lets treat captain TP to a hot ham and cheese...

CarlE,

I would love to read all of the "crap" at Yappi and the Lair, but...................living in Las Vegas, I might find better things to do with my spare time !!
