In 1993, Fred Krum, the director of the Akron-Canton Regional Airport, proposed building an exit at Shuffel to relieve traffic at the airport exit. The initial cost estimate was $3.6 million. In the end, it cost $25.8 million, ODOT said, though some officials, such as Stark County Engineer Michael Rehfus, believe the actual figure is several million dollars lower.
