There's no way I would miss that one. It would be a classic for the ages. Especially since I think they travel pretty well. I do believe that it would be two programs with a lot of class battling it out on the field and in the stands, so to speak.

i like the idea that we will be connected to this every year. this event is really showing off ohio football and is helping to end the questions of where the best football is played in the country.
hopefully this valdosta game gets done. That would be awesome.

I'm glad the game would be played up here in Ohio. If the game were to be played in Valdosta that would be ok too. I could just stay for free at my gf's sister's place in Valdosta. It's a win/win for me. I'd much rather save the 150-180 in gas though.

Why don't you plan on getting in your car and making the trip up to Massillon for the game in 2007? Heck why don't you make the trip for the Herbstreit Classic this year. I know a few people that are coming in from out of town. You can just join the party!!!

I think having Glenville in this is a joke, other then sending a few kids to OSU what have they ever done in the playoffs? I would much rather have a St Ed's or Ig or Warren on a yearly basis playing the top teams in the country then this "all individuals and no TEAM" concept that is going on at Glenville.

I think I would agree with tiger#22. I think it would be great to put Massillon, McKinley and Warren in this thing every year. A couple of old AAC TITANS taking it to some out of state powers would be pretty sweet.

In the past we've heard about Massillon vs. Valdosta in 2006, 2005, 2004.....While I'd love to see it, I'll believe it when it's signed on the dotted line. It does appears that several of the previous problems with getting this matchup are moot with the Herbstreit association.
I too thought it was strange that Glenville would be in it every year. You have no problem making the argument for the Tigers or the Pups. But as another posted, what have the Tarblooders done in the grand scheme of things? I'd like to see the third team rotated (Warren, Ignatius, St. Eds, Glenville, etc.) each season. And who says all the matchups HAVE to be D-1? You could add a Steubenville or Mooney in the mix occasionally.

IF the Herbie people are smart, they would play a
Glenville vs ______________ followed by
McKinley vs ______________ followed by a
Massillon vs Valdosta nightcap...
It would guarantee a unique atmosphere to say the least.
I am sure there will be Tiger fans rooting against McKinley and well as some McKinley fans rooting against Massillon, but for the most part, we'd all be there one way or the other to see just what happens and by who BECAUSE WE ARE FANS OF THIS GREAT RIVALRY.
The thought of a doubleheader with Massillon is exciting, don't you think?
The stadium would be sold-out, the place decked with tailgaters all day long, and we all know not many Glenville people will stick to the end of the day. Some will yes, but not many, and Fawcett is perfect for this game.
For the first time since all this Massillon vs Valdosta talk came up years ago, I am excited, because I know I will be there for it, and I will be pulling for good ol OHIO!

Here's an Inde article that talks about some of the "hurdles."

(If link doesn't match try sports archives for 7/25/06)
The schedule can be re-shuffled somewhat, but it will take agreement from several teams to do so.

This is such exciting news! I really hope that the "hurdles" can be overcome and this game gets scheduled. Can you imagine the fanfare and national attention the two most winningest schools in the nation will draw? It will be AWESOME! I thought it was great enough to be able to feel so excited about our upcoming season again, but having something so cool to look forward to before this season has even begun is just "da bomb" lol !
New coach, fantastic 1st season, State Runner-up, anticipating new improvements to be announced, new band director, the big Kahuna retiring, playing a non-fed schedule, and now this. Massillon IS returning to it's glory days:dance:
Talked to a few of our seniors last night and they are confident and :weightlift: and expecting a "sweet" season:tig: :ers:

The thing about some of these records though; some of those schools garnered those wins against relatively inferior competition!!! I doubt VERY seriously if those other teams mentioned play NEARLY as demanding a schedule as a Massillon, a McKinley, or a Valdosta!!!
As an aside; I noticed that the article that you folks posted regarding Valdosta indicated that the CATS had been "DOWN" for the past four seasons!!! While not NEARLY the JUGGARNAUT of the sixties, seventies, eighties, and nineties; they are by NO means a PATSY!!! These comments coming from their archrival school!!!
Of those seventeen losses in the past four seasons, eight were by a total of twenty five points!!! And most of those losses were to perennial Georgia and Florida powers!!! Three losses were to Camden Co., 2003 AAAAA State Champions, and nationally ranked on three occasions during those years!!! Two more were one point losses to perennial national power Tallahassee Lincoln!!! And yet another close eight point loss was to North Florida power, Madison Co. in addition to a three point loss to state power Walton in the Georgia State Quarterfinals and a three point loss to region rival Coffee Co.!!!
Their 11-4 record in 2003 was the product of their starting slowly, and ended with them being the AAAAA State Runnersup to nationally ranked Camden Co.!!!
The CATS have played very FEW GIMME games throughout their history and that trend continues today!!! The CATS play two time defending AAAAA state champion Lowndes, state power and two time national champion Warner Robins, AAAAA State runnersup Brookwood, as well as Lincoln in regular season, in addition to playing in the toughest region in Georgia prep football, 1AAAAA!!!
Just food for thought!!!

I figure glenville would have more speed then ft. th. highlands, not sure on louisville male. glenville against long beach poly would be a game of speed and I would like to see that one. hopefully we can play valdosta in 2007 and have the game on one of the espn channels. I would be so pumped if we got to play them. the 1 vs. 2 in all time wins would be great. valdosta may be down as far as wins and loses but still a great team to play. I wish we had are playoff system start sooner like georgia did, just think we may be closer to valdosta in wins if are state would of ok'd a playoff format. because in the 40's, 50's and 60's we had some good teams.

Valdosta had a head start in regards to playing in post season games (not a crack on the Tigers). Georgia started a playoff system, and with more teams than Ohio.

Well... what I can find says we widened the gap from 2nd to 3rd a little.
Little Rock Central went 5-5 last year
and
Louisville Male went 10-2
Which makes us 7 up on #3, not much breathing room.
We were 67 games behind Valdosta GA
They went 7-5 last year, so we picked up 6 games on them.
61 now then.

Massillon did have about a 15 year jump on Valdosta, but many of those years the Tigers only played 2-3 games. Plus Valdosta played 12-13 games a year many of those playoff runs throught the '40's-70's. While Massillon only played 10, your talking 35-40 years of 2-3 more games. Do the math, if Ohio had playoffs with all those great Tiger teams through the years we'd have right around 820 too.
Updated wins with the '05 season...
Valdosta-828-179-35
Massillon-767-222-35
Also not knocking Valdosta or Georgia football, but Ohio has the greatest high school football anywhere. I doubt their competition matches-up against the Moeller's of the late '70's, the Iggy teams that dominated the '90's, and the McK games.

glenville would get rocked by most if not all of these teams. Long beach poly would embarrass them. they are overrated every single year, you can not win on speed or talent alone. glenville has proven this for the last 5 years and counting.

FYI Valdosta's region, 1AAAAA, has former or current members who have ten National Championships!!! And there are another dozen years when other members finished in the TOP TEN nationally!!!

While Massillon does lay claim to 9 National Championships, I have always thought these really don't have a lot of stock. Without the teams from each state each playing each other at least a couple of times, it is purely speculation as to which state play the best football. So sure, Georgia's region 1AAAAA can claim 10 national titles, but it really proves nothing in how they would do against Massillon or any other Ohio team for that matter.

I thought the original plan was to play valdosta for two years in 2005 and 2006! Now the plan is to hopefully match the teams in 2007 in the herbstreit classic! Lets just get the deal done so we can see if they can match up with the talent up here. I wish we could have played this year baby-- were loaded! Anyone doubting our tigers can get us up close and personal on the 25th of August when we start our 1st of 15 poundings were giving on the way to the title.

High School football in Georgia (at least in Valdosta and most of the southern part of the state) is very different from Ohio high school football. I have some video of the Georgia State Semi-Finals and Finals in which Valdosta played in 2004. I watched both games (they lost in the finals) and I think they ran 4 plays the entire time. It was similar to watching Texas play with Vince Young. They have a nice running play, and a speed option play that varies off of it. Between those two plays, that was 80% of the playbook. Now, like Texas with Vince Young, when you have a great athlete(s) you keep doing what you do best until they stop you.
They may have some extremely fast players, but overall as a team, I would match up the Tigers against anyone in the country. I played in college with a guy who played LB at Valdosta. He was supposed to be the baddest LB from the state of Georgia that year. He was just an average player in college, and probably would have been an All-State player in Ohio too.
I doubt this matchup will ever happen, but don't be afraid of the Wildcats!

chronic tiger, I think you would be correct about them losing to poly or male. but if highlands is the same team colerain smacked around last year. I would pick glenville over them and yes talent doesn't always equal titles. see massillon a few years back when we had zwick. glenville has had wins just not titles. tiger coach I agree with you on valdosta about them running the same plays but perry also did this and was successfull under wakefield. who knows what there new coach will call as far as plays.

what was the name of the lb from valdosta?i've been watching the cats since 66.i can tell you if he was all state or not.in the middle of the 03 season then first year head coach rick darlington scratched the flex-bone and went to some shot-gun.by the way lowndes has won the last 2 meetings only and this year they are down.we have a new coach who just happens to be the winningest ga. coach over the last 14 seasons.valdosta just set a new natl record for Bigger,Faster,Stronger as the strongest hs fb team in america.
i hope you continue to under-estimate the valdosta wildcats and the powder puff teams they've played down through the years as well as the simple level of football the state of ga. plays.
