Seems some good ol' Oklahoma boys coming to Canton insisting the Massillon vs McKinley rivalry is not the #1 rivalry in the country.

Seems the Tulsa Union(Oklahoma) vs Jenks rivalry with there 40,000 vocal and radical fans claim right to the #1 rivalry in the Nation.

It's some good stuff to hear and read about floating around on the Internet. Can it be true? Check it out tiger faithfull.....

A rivalry is not judged by attendance only, although I know our attendances would be higher in many years except for the "inadequacy" of our stadiums!

How long has this OK rivalry been in existance? Have they consistantly been the focal point of the state or nation with titles (or playoff hopes, etc.) riding on the line? Have they consistantly featured future stars and great coaches who have made their mark on the sport in later years? Have they featured sub-traditions such as parades, dinners, etc for decades on through? How many miles apart are they and do they engender a certain feeling in the stomachs of the opposite team's fans when their name is mentioned or colors seen?

I could go on.

I had a student once from Jenks- nice guy. He said football was big out there, but not as big as Massillon-McKinley (Of course I might have exaggerrated to him a bit- esp. the part of having a lucky fan sacrificed before the game)

CarlE

I never said it was bigger. All I was doing was pointing out what a dope post someone made saying there was nothing to do in Oklahoma City when THEY live in Massillon. Just trust me on this one, OK? I'm right.

I went to a Jenks-Union game the first year I moved to Oklahoma. I had to see what all the hype was about... I haven't been back since! It was BORING! I felt like I was watching a junior high game, there were so many mistakes and just unorganized! The halftime shows were very subpar. They played at Tulsa University Stadium and it was barely full. Sorry nothing can compare to Ohio (Tiger) Football!

Listed by one source as the number one high school football rivalry in the country, the Union vs. Jenks game is a great american rivalry. Played annually at the University of Tulsa’s Skelly Stadium, the Mid-First Bank Backyard Bowl draws 20,000 fans, with some games topping 30,000, and the record maxing out at 40,035. Most schools across the country would be lucky to draw 40,000 for the entire season, but this is just one game, some might say “THE” game.

There are 14 state titles between the two teams. Union owning three 6A titles (‘05, ‘04, ‘02) and one Class C title (‘63). Jenks has eight 6A Titles (‘03, ‘01, ‘00, ‘99, ‘98, ‘97, ‘96, ‘93) one 5A Title (‘82) and one 3A Title (‘79). These two teams leave little doubt why this game is such a long, historic rivalry.

Under new head football coach Kevin Wright, formerly of Warren Central in Indianapolis, Union hopes to reverse the trend that Jenks has been setting in recent years. Jenks has won the last two Backyard Bowls, 17 to 13 in 2004, and a real shootout with a score of 48 to 44 in 2005. For a game that resumed in 1976, after going on a 23 year hiatus, the Backyard Bowl is a true rivalry, full of history and tradition, with mere miles separating the two schools.

Jenks, won the Backyard Bowl last year and may have won the battle, but Union won the war in 2005, winning the State 6A Championship for the third time. Between these two teams, no other high school in Class 6A in Oklahoma has won the state title since 1995.

Jenks leads the all-time series 27 to 11, but Union is not going to back down. There have been times in which the winner of the Backyard Bowl has failed to make the sweep. So the series for the year was split, with one team holding the Backyard Bowl trophy, and the other holding the State Championship trophy.

You can bet that this game, like all of the rest, will be forever remembered as one of the classics of the Backyard Bowl. This game is featured as one of the 2006 Great American Rivalry Series, because it is just that, a Great American Rivalry.

This brought up a question in my mind as I began looking into Massillon history...anyone have an thoughts on why there were only 2 games some seasons then back up to 8 or 9 then back down?

1904- Massillon played 8 Games
3-4-1

1905 Massillon Played 3 games 1-0-1

1906 1-2 Coach: Merwin

1907 3-4-1 Coach: Hall

1908 1-1 Hall

Things were quite erratic in the early days on whether there would be interest in forming a team, whether there could be an "advisor" or coach for the team, and what other schools had teams in a particular year.

OSU went through the same sort of thing during the same era and I'm sure other HS's and colleges did too, except for the established "football schools" of the day- Ivy League, Michigan, Chicago, etc. I think OSU's first game ever was played in the springtime!

They can claim anything they want.

Doesnt make it so.

Rivalries need more than merely two consistently good teams to make it to the top of the list. They need history, tradition, national media exposure, great names, color, and staying power.

Jenks-Union certainly is a great rivalry. But it cant match Massillon-McKinley in any of those categories.

PBTS and Fawcett are football shrines. We have names like Paul Brown, Harry Stuhldreher, Marion Motley, Earle Bruce, Ben Schwartzwalter...all of them long before 38 years ago. The NFL sprang from the bowels of Stark County. When the NFL makes its annual trip back to its roots, it plays a game at Fawcett. The brand of football we see now was birthed here in the 1930s. The color was also birthed right here by George Bird. What we see at halftime of nearly every game at every level started with the TSB.

Massillon-McKinley is #1, and nobody else is close.

We have the oldest longest rivalry in the country. The signings for the original NFL were in Stark County. There is more football tradition in Stark County than anywhere in th U.S.A. That is why we have the Pro Football Hall Of Fame! It takes more than a few state titles to supplant this rivalry!

As far as the fans... We have the best fans. I would bet my house on it!!!

AMEN

This is the point I was making. Attendence is nothing. Playing 38 times, come on they are only beginning to have a rivalry. When they have the history and national support that Massillon has maybe they could step foot in our stadium to play us.
My brother was in Florida this winter playing in a softball tournament and he was wearing a Massillon sweatshirt between games. He said that he could not believe that he had people coming up to him asking him when did he go to Massillon. They had teams from all over the country at the tournament.

These two teams leave little doubt why this game is such a long, historic rivalry.

i guess in oklahoma 38 games is considered long and historic.

Jenks leads the all-time series 27 to 11

doesn't seem like much of a rivalry when it's this one-sided.

Actually the USA Today rated Tulsa Union(Oklahoma)vs Jenks the #1 rivalry in the Nation.

This coming from a newspaper that has only been around for 25 years and that was probably the opinion of the high school writer who more then likely isnt even 35 years old. Although I dont remember Tulsa and Jenks getting a cover story in the sports section like the Tigers and Bulldogs did back in the 90's.

There is no debate:

- number 2 all time wins (Massillon) in the US versus number 5 all time wins

- number 1 all time wins (Massillon)

- numerous state and national championships

- links back to the start of professional football

- numerous all ohio, all american players

- more than 100 years of rivalry games - 8 miles apart

- tradition, pageantry, hugh crowds

It's not even close - it's not just about crowd sizes. Bring some of these OKIES back in late October for McKinley week and they will change their minds.

I will give Jenks this. Their facilities are decent.

(It's fairly similar to how the South end zone will look at PBTS next year.)

Tulsa Union's Tuttle Stadium reportedly seats around 9-thousand.

They play their annual rivalry game at Tulsa University's stadium. It's about the same size as the Rubber Bowl.
