Read this on Yappi......... seems like the Middletown team may not be able to play due to pay for play fees not being paid.

Anybody hear about this???

http://www.middletownjournal.com/news/content/oh/story/news/local/2007/08/22/mj082207paytoplayweb.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=16

Not sure if this means they will not play this week or not. Comments on Yappi and in today's Repository apparently question it.

It's my understanding that the position of the Middletown administration is that there has to be enough participation for ALL fall sports or else they are going to axe everything...an all-or-nothing deal. So it doesn't matter if football gets enough kids if soccer, tennis, and whatever don't have the participation...football would get cut too.

Am I wrong on this?

Yes, you are correct. But, one trip to Massillon will pay for Tennis, Soccer, and probably Football.

If Middleton does not play this game with cancellation this late, then I think they should be banned from participating in any sanction sports for the next 2 years. Massillon should ask and be given money to cover the cost of tickets that Massillon will have to reimburse ticket buyers. For a school to hold their taxpayers in hostage like this is wrong. First, if they do not have enough for soccer too BAD. They have broken a contract with us.

If anything, at least let the kids play the game against us, it could be a highlight of their careers to play in PBTS. I'm not just saying that so we get a game, but look around, there aren't many stadiums and atmospheres like ours!!!

This nearly happened in 1978, when a Cleveland teachers' strike cancelled our game with Cleveland Glenville in Week 3. Luckily, we were able to schedule a last-minute matchup with East Liverpool.

Of course, if Middletown sends their uniforms up, the MP All-Stars can take on the Tigers!

def they should be respons. for all tickets purchased already.... it is going to cost way more than they think if they back out if a signed contract.. dover did it to us a year ago and they had to pay us 5,000$$$ .. but massillon being who we are will probabaly cut them a check to get them here... how grrrrrrrr8 is MASSILLON :)

Middletown might have to cancel sports
BY SUE KIESEWETTER | ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR
E-mail | Print | digg us! | del.icio.us!

MIDDLETOWN – With a 10 a.m. deadline looming Thursday, most Middletown High School football players, band members, and cheerleaders and others still had not paid their required $325 pay-to-play fees – leaving the fate of fall sports and activities in doubt this year.

In fact, as of 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, when the most recent information was available, only one of the 66 varsity and junior varsity football players at Middletown High School had paid their fee, school officials said Wednesday.

Other sports and activities weren’t faring much better.

Of the 235 Middletown High School students who signed up for fall sports or cheerleading, only 25 – less than 10 percent – had paid their fees, Superintendent Steve Price told the board of education.

“We are in what I would call dire straits,’’ Price said. “Despite lowered fees, the collection rate is desperately low.”

About 580 students had signed up for marching band, cheerleading or fall sports, including football, volleyball, soccer, tennis, golf and cross country. That compares to about 620 students who participated a year ago, treasurer Eric Sotzing said.

Fall sports would only proceed if enough money is collected from students or donated through the district’s “534 Committee” to fund the programs, he said. He put that figure at about $136,000.

The 534 Committee had donated just over $10,000 by late Tuesday, but that figure is expected to grow, Sotzing said.

The district is expected to announce Thursday whether fall sports will proceed, Price said.

Participation fees may be paid today at the high school’s main office, district administrative offices, the athletic department office or at Vail or Verity middle schools’ main offices.

This does not look good.

I hope something is being done behind closed doors and that hopefully, the local paper is simply printing a story like that to entice local businesses and private donor to help with some costs.

It will cost our program a ton of $$$$$ to lose our opener. 12k in ticket sales that will have to be returned, programs printed out, lost concessions.....bad, bad news.

Hopefully all this worrying will be for nothing.

I can't believe that the Middletown coaches wouldn't have made sure the kids made their payments for all sports teams. Especially the football team after the coaches volunteered their time to reduce the fees.

These reports do not look good at all with a 1000 deadline on Thursday. This would be really disappointing and Massillon should consider some legal action if they stiffed on the opener.

Let's hope for the best.

"On top of that has been the talk of all Middletown athletics being cancelled for the fall season should not enough athletes shell out the necessary dollars to participate. That includes the Middies’ football season, which is still expected to kick off on Friday night at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. Yet, none of that has fazed the Middies as they get ready for the Tigers."

From Todd Porter's column (the usual TP disclaimer applies):
"Middletown optimistic about playing"
http://cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=371992&Category=17&subCategoryID=29

"'We have a good community, and everything will be taken care of,' said Lebo, who placed the odds of playing the game at 75 percent.'Our contract with Massillon calls for them to come to Middletown next year. It would be unfortunate if we couldn’t come up there this year, and I wouldn’t blame them for not wanting to come down here.' Massillon officials are planning for a game Friday. Athletic Director Tim Ridgley said in all of his conversations with Lebo and Middletown officials, the game is a go."

"Fall season fee deadline is 10 a.m. today"
http://www.middletownjournal.com/hp/content/oh/story/news/local/2007/08/23/mj082307middparticipationweb.html

Some excerpts from the article:

"If Middletown City Schools has not collected enough money to pay for fall athletics and marching band by 10 a.m. today, the fall sports season will be canceled, district officials said. But some longtime Middie supporters said Wednesday they plan to donate a "sizeable" amount of money to ensure that students who want to participate in athletics this fall will have that chance. Three longtime supporters of the program, who asked not to be identified, told The Journal that a group in the community has been raising funds and plans to give the money today to the district."

...

"The sources said donations as large as $10,000 have been submitted and there has even been talk of loans being taken out to help pay participation fees. Many of the donors, they said, wish to remain anonymous because they "don't want any credit."

....

"If the money comes through, it may be in just the nick of time. Only 74, or about 31 percent, of 235 Middletown High School athletic participants have paid the $325 pay-to-participate fee for the fall season as of 7 p.m. Wednesday night when the athletic office closed, according to Alberico. Forty-nine students had paid $25 marching band fees and 34 students had paid $175 middle school athletic fees, she said. That's a total of $31,225.
For the fall program at the middle and high schools to be cost-neutral to the district, an estimated 580 students must pay fees, Treasurer Eric Sotzing said. That's about 300 high school athletic participants at $325 each, 90 high school marching band members at $25 each and 190 middle school athletic participants at $175 each."

Greetings from Middletown! Nothing new to report as of yet but I don know that there was a fury of activity by our student-athletes, parents and supporters of the fall programs to make this a successful fall. As a parent of a senior it would indeed be crushing to not see the season unfold. Fees deadline has passed

By Megan Gildow

Staff Writer

Thursday, August 23, 2007

A steady line of about 20 students and parents has been at Middletown High School this morning to pay participation fees before the 10 a.m. deadline, according to school employees.

Several soccer players in line at about 9:30 a.m. said they wouldn't have paid the fee had it remained at $900 and some said they even considered switching schools.

"My dad actually asked me that," said John Sauter, who said his parents asked if he wanted to go to Fenwick for the 2007-08 school year. "But it's my senior year."

Though lowering the fees to $325 made it more affordable, "it's ridiculous," said sophomore Darius Kinley.

Parent John Burg has two children involved in fall athletics at the middle and high school and paid for some other students' fees also.

"I just want the kids to have the opportunity to participate," he said. Burg is a junior high volleyball coach.

Burg said he thought families should be reimbursed for the payments if a November tax issue passed, perhaps applying the payments toward future fees.

The district is expected to announce this afternoon if the fall season will proceed after it is determined if enough fees have been collected.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

What about the poor seniors at Middletown? They can't even transfer somewhere and be eligible unless they physically move to another district and it still may be too late for that. I'm not positve on the rules, but they are getting screwed, too.

Fees deadline has passed

Thanks for the update, Banks.

Thanks for answering it.

I hope the extra 5 hours you have to wait from your phone call till the announcement doesn't make a difference on your travel plans tomorrow.

If Middletown plays tomorrow, we should applaud them as they enter the stadium as a "Welcome to Tigertown". Then once our hospitality has been shown, the Massillon Tigers can take over and show us what they're made of. Offense can put up the points, and defense can keep the opponents from scoring. Massillon 28 - Middletown 14 (I'm being polite) :tig:

Maybe, we should have a Campbell Oil truck following their buses so they can fill them up when they run out of gas and don't have any money:lol:

The more I think about it , I would have to say as of now 1:55pm that our school officials would know what is going on.

I assure you that with our connections we will know minutes after they know.

Not conjecture, rumor or guessing...but when it is a fact one way or the other.

MIDDLETOWN — Middletown school officials have called a press conference for 3 p.m. this afternoon, said Debbie Alberico, the district's communications specialist.

District officials are expected to make an announcement this afternoon on the fate of fall athletics and marching band.

How on earth could they cancel out on a game the night before the game is actually to be played? I would think that they could/should be sued for attempting to do something like that. You can't wait that long to make a decision like that.
I said in an earlier post that if they cancel this game they should be sued for the ticket money that Massillon will have to reimburse, also for canceling a contract. I also think they should be ban from all sports for at least two years.

I went to the middletown journal and it seems some are upset with this B. O. E. president. This is a disgrace to their program.

Is there such a thing as an "unofficial" press conference?
