I do have a LOT of drunk cousins. They should be shot too !! Once my cousin ran over our "across the street" neighbor's mailbox in the middle of the night.
I was hoping to save my sober relatives !!!

Pardon my ignorance, but someone has to know the question to this:
Why does the police or the media announce where and when they set up these check points? Wouldn't they catch more people off guard? Overall it is for public safety to get as many offenders off the road, rather than get a small percentage. To me it is like giving your military's enemy the next strategy you are going to run, and at what time. Looking for a reasonable answer thanks!

The police/news release the checkpoint locations all the time. Smart drunks just drive around the checkpoints---DUH!! Law enforcement officals in Stark County get the dumbest workers of the week award for that.

I believe they have to announce the location prior to doing the checkpoint.

I believe they have to announce the location prior to doing the checkpoint.
Why? The Highway Patrol does not announce speed traps on TV or newspaper.

I believe all counties in Ohio announce the checkpoints, at least I know Summit does.
It is not a "trap" it is a checkpoint, and is in reality a public relations effort to educate people about DUI's.
Drive through one and you will get the jist of what they are trying to accomplish.

Is there such a thing as a smart drunk? I doubt most of the drunk drivers read/watch the news enough to find out when and where the checkpoints will be. But it does make you wonder what the point of releasing that info is for.

What education? The only education needed is not to drink and drive. I was refering to the highway patrol not announcing when they will be sitting on the side of the road giving speeding tickets so why advertise DUI checkpoints. The goal is to get drunks off the road and advetising just mkes them take a longer more dangerous route to avoid them checkpoints IMO.
However I have been through numerous DUI checkpoints with no convictions or arrests because when I drink I have my wife drive me where I need to go!

If they are smart they will put an officer on the side roads right before the checkpoint to catch all the drunks that turn off when they see it.

Will Massillon police set traps for when Massillon plays Warren?
Go Easy!!!!!!! This year the game is at your house. We'll leave the drunks out! I can not wait for football. Not eager to rake leaves, but ready for football!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, all joking aside, what if in the future a DUI Trap? That would stun a lot of people!!!!!!! No media coverage, no announcements, you just drive into one? Has police or state patrol done it yet anywhere in Ohio? Other states?

Summit County announces these checkpoints about 3 times a month and I'm amazed about the number of drunks they still catch. It's not just for DUI, but seatbelt violations, suspended licenses, no insurance, etc..

Not all DUI's are drunks. You can have 1 drink and be "legally" impaired.

They often do.

I saw this online explanation as to why the checkpoints are announced beforehand.
"Police fund the checkpoints through government grants. The government requires them to give notice so that the government isn’t funding targeted checkpoints (example: cops decide to sit outside bar frequented by day laborers)."

Not one, but 2. I had a friend drink 2 (two), yes TWO, 20oz drafts last friday, and get pulled over leaving the Winking Lizard. He blew a .08 on the nose.

Thanks Lift--I knew it had to be a reason.
Now I see why they are announced. Regulations prevent them from doing sneaks and bullying attacks on bar patrons. The Govt. needs the warnings from all the drunks/drinkers they have on Americas highways.

Unlike DUI checkpoints, speed traps exist strictly to raise revenue. The goal is not to reduce speeding - otherwise, they'd announce them and then people would slow down.

Ask and ye shall recieve.
From the OSHP website:
Sobriety checkpoints are designed to be a deterrent, not a trap.
The Supreme Court has ruled that before conducting a sobriety checkpoint, several criteria must be met. First, the location of the checkpoint must have a historically high rate of alcohol-related crashes. Second, the agency must follow specific guideline for notification that the checkpoint is to be conducted. Also, if traffic is too heavy to stop each car passing through the checkpoint, cars must be stopped according to a predetermined formula (ie: every other car, every fourth car, etc.).
Also:
The checkpoints will be held in conjunction with nearby saturation patrols to aggressively combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes.

According to the newspaper, nearly 1500 vehicles were stopped on W. Tusc and 2 drunken drivers were arrested.
