View Full Version : Should a Sr. Transfer be a Captain?

I read somewhere that the coaching staff is going to name the captains this year and not the players. I just wondered what some opinions would be on Torrence being named a Captain, if he does get named. It would seem odd to me that a Senior transfer who has never put on a Massillon Tiger uniform should make Captain. But, thats just my opinion. Anybody else?

I would have to agree. It takes a kid that understands what the name "Massillon" on your chest means. In the past there have been captains that moved in as early as 9th, but they got to experience the whole thing by the time captain was given to them. Good Luck to whoever gets the nod, be a great leader by example.

MC--- I think it is bad timing for this thread at this time. The team needs positive words and encouragement to accomplish the goal of a 2007 State Championship.Anything negative said about any one player could be the start of a domino effect and hurt the team--we are way too talented to get off on the wrong track right now!

GO TIGERS!!!!

Andy Alleman was a darned good captain...and he was chosen by the players before ever playing a down.

While I admit that it would be unusual, leadership is leadership, no matter where it comes from.

And we have had some very fine players who only played their senior seasons for the Tigers...among them Ducky, Alleman, Vogel, Ace Grooms.

Just like America wouldnt be America without a lot of immigrants, the Massillon we know now wouldnt be what it is without a bunch of very good players (and leadership) that made a choice to play here.

Stacy recently disclosed the staff will decide how captains are chosen at the end of 2 a days, not before the start of them like before. Translation (to me anyhow) is the honor will be EARNED. Leaders can emerge from 5 star transfers to 5th string backups in my book.

i think that it is a great idea that the coaches will be picking the captains.

Most likely, and it will probably succeed... BUT, I would say that if a kid transfers in here and out works, and out hustles the incumbent players to prove himself, then he obviously gets it, and should be held up as a leader. Where I would have a problem is when a kid is given the captain title, just because he is a great player, transfer or not. Being a great player does not make one a leader.

The fact that the coaches are waiting, and will name the captains, tells me that they are looking for players to step up and lead this team by example, and by voice.

WOW! Transfer or not, if you're on the team you're on the team. There's no half way.

I agree. A leader is a leader. Too often, when the kids pick, it turns out to be a popularity contest for the "title". Many times the real "leaders" are not elected or designated "Captain." But true leaders do emerge and LEAD anyway!

I have to agree. We, the public, need to do our part to promote unity.I just would like to point out to those who are assuming that the captains will be picked by the coaches , that is not what was stated by Stacy. He said that the coaches will decided HOW the captains are going to be picked at or near the end of two-a-days. So, either there was a typo, or there is still the good chance that the guys will pick their captains. Perhaps, the coaches will decided who is eligible to be a captain and then the kids pick from that group or something along those lines:scratchchin:
