Me and Brandi saw this kid early in the tourney, and thought he must be from Ohio, because of all his BUCKEYES gear !! There are currently only 28 players left, and he is 13th !! WOW ! Guaranteed at least $ 285 K !!!
Here is what today's players are gunning for...
10-12 - $476,926
13-15 - $429,114
16-18 - $381,302
19-27 - $333,490
28-36 - $285,678
Player Profiles: Ryan Elson
Ryan Elson from Canton, Ohio has an amazing story... he's playing in his first live tournament... ever. Elson and his brother got together with some friends and started a poker league home game. Each player put up $500 and the winner would get $10,000 for a buy-in to the WSOP main event plus a few bucks for travel expenses. Ryan Elson won his seat and is representing his poker league back in Canton. Several family members and friends are here on the rail cheering him on.
As of now, Elson is among the final 29 players in the biggest tournament in the world. That's an impressive feat considering that he's playing in his first ever real tournament.
His friend Steve was quick to point out, "Hey wait a minute. My basement is a real tournament!"
From a friend's basement to the final four tables at the WSOP. Ryan Elson is on a magical ride and hoping to make the final table.

Ryan just busted out in 25th position. He picks up a COOL $ 333,490 !!! Not bad for a $ 500 investment.
Seemed like a good kid. Well mannered, and carried himself like a pro.
Congrats !!

The losing hand:
Ryan Elson Is Eliminated in 24th Place ($333,490)Elson and Jon Kalmar checked a flop of QD 8C JD , and when AC the hit on the turn Kalmar check-called a 200K bet from Elson. The 8H fell on the river and when Elson checked, Kalmar bet 400,000.
Elson asked, "You hit that Ace?"
Kalmar replied, "You missed your flush?"
Elson announced he was all-in and Kalmar insta-called. Elson held for trip Eights but Kalmar had a straight with , and that was enough to knock out Elson.

Exactly what I was going to post after reading DAWGH8R's post before I scrolled down and read yours. Are you kidding me? People would actually PAY to watch poker on TV? Ludicrous.

Went down to the RIO this morning at 10AM to get in line to watch in person. However , the line was about 400 people deep.
I was surprised, as we've sat on set at the "ESPN Featured table" a few times this week, with only 90 minute waits.
So, I get to come home and watch on TV. Being the SATELITE KING has it's privilages !!!

Why?
Perhaps all the paint in Las Vegas has dried and there is nothing left to rust.
(Either that, or he hasn't found a job yet---and his wife has.)

Um...perhaps that was a joke (that watching what seems to be the same five guys play poker is about as interesting to me as the "aquarium channel" or whatever it's called. To each their own I guess).

Well with over 55,000 people paying to eneter WSOP events during the last 6 weeks, maybe someone ELSE is missing the boat.
With the emergence of WSOP, WPT , H2H, US Poker hampionship, Poker after dark, High stakes poker, and the likes on TV, just maybe the powers that be have figured out that there is quite a market for it.
Heck, even the Booster Club has tried their hand at a fund raiser Texas Holdem event.
No limit Texas Holdem has been on the rise for the last few years. I've been playing since 1984. Look for its continued growth.
Sites like BODOG, Poker Stars, Ultimate Bet Poker, Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker are thriving over the recent emergence of poker.
What an event ! You don't have to be fast , tall, in shape, able to throw a ball to play.
Anyone that has the buy-in can participate. What other event doesn't discriminate against participants ???
To each his own. Some people " cow tip " , some play poker !!!

I don't know much about all these events, but wouldn't lack of money for poor people like me be a discriminating factor?

Not at the WSOP. The guy that won, had a total of $225 invested in his seat. He won a "satellite" tourney at a Cali casino where the prize was a seat in the WSOP.
The kid from Canton had $500 invested through his "local" poker pals, and won his seat in the WSOP.
They have events scheduled all over the country , to win a seat at the WSOP. A lot of online poker sites have given thousands of seats away to the WSOP. A lot of them by registering for a FREE online tournament, where the prize is a WSOP seat.
So NO, it doesn't discriminate against the "financially challenged" either !!!
With the MAIN EVENT participants counted at OVER 6800, that means more people will have played in the WSOP at the RIO SUITES in Las vegas, than have seen a FED FOOTBALL GAME this season !!!!

Hmmm....Sounds like a plan. Maybe it will work out better than my lottery ticket retirement has worked out.
I doubt a would waste $250 though on winning something that can at times be beyond my control. I know the experienced players know when someone is bluffing, how much to wager, etc., but you also have to get some lucky cards as well.

A lot of "poker ignorant" people would never know that mathematics is probably the biggest part of the game. And , by judging the recent "test score" results , I don't suggest many Ohians to try to "break" into the poker world.
There are a combination of things that you need to be successful.
The ability to "read" a player is crucial. The ability to pick up on a "tell" is more than helpful.
Knowing the mathematical probability that you have to "make" a hand is crucial.
Knowing if the pot odds, ( money bet vs pot size ), are in your favor.
Being able to calculate what hands can beat you, and teh odds of another player having that hand.
Knowing when you are in "position" to fold/call/raise or re-raise.
It's no accident that a lot of kids that are math or psyche majors, drop out of college to make a better living paing poker.
When someone on here makes over $12 million, ( like Jamie Gold in 2006 ) , for a week's worth of work, then you'll get my attention.

Unless you get your TV programming for free , you PAY for EVERYTHING you watch !!!
It's that CABLE bill you get in the mail, unless you have "rabbit ears" !!

Or maybe because there are so many "sports channels," FSN Ohio, ESPN2 and the others need to fill their 24 hour lineups with cheap programming. There are few fixed costs associated with taping guys at a table.

I understand there's a definite strategy that takes a lot of time to perfect. I also understand there are hundreds of people who enter in hopes of catching "that hot streak to the big money." But for every success story, there are dozens of people with little more than gambling addictions.
I'm not putting anyone down who tries it. But I wouldn't tell my child to drop out of school to give it a shot.
