I bet its rare that any of us miss many tiger games. My parents use to carry me to Tiger games and I cant remember missing many since then. We dont schedule anything in the fall without consulting the football schedule and its a given not to plan anything on the saturdays following the regular season!

The first game that I remember was back in 1970 when we beat McKinley and my dad ran on the field afterwards because we won the state championship. I was 7 years old. I'll estimate that I've seen 225 games since I was a kid, minus my college days.

Why? Please explain what you mean by that?
Well, I've only been able to get to 3 or 4 games a year for the past 20 years or so. But driving 11 hours from Georgia makes it a little more inconvenient than when I was living in Massillon. (BTW- the games in Cincinnati are almost like "home games" to me!)

My first Tiger game was when Leo Strang was the coach back in the 50s. My aunt used to take me when I was five or so. Started actively watching games in 1965. All toll, if memory serves, I've attended 429 games. Beat that!

Mostly it was tongue in cheek, BUT.... I was not a big fan of Shep's. I did go to some games, to support some kids that I knew, but I didn't agree with a lot of his ideas on how a team should be run.

I've believe I've missed only 2 games since the 70's. The home games are GREAT, but we've been on some FANTASTIC road trips.
The Buddy LaRosa was a blast. The trip to play INSIDE at Indy was awesome. Altoona in the late 80's. This past season to the Herbsreibt Classic was an absolute BLAST.
Old regular road trips like Austintown and Lima were fun too.
I always dread the hike to Warren though.
Something about overnite road trips makes it more fun !!
This year will be tough. I don't know how many games I'll get back for. It will depend on how our playoff chances are. :no1:
**oops, edit. I think it was 3 games since the late 70's**Missed a home opener in '02 to take Abbey to Arizona State for school.***
The total games attended (including playoffs) is probably close to 500. I started attending as a kid in the early 1960's :tig:

I think that the support that the fans are showing for our Tigers are great as they relate how they are at the games and supporting the Tigers. When visitors come to this website and see how our fans get behind the Tigers ,they will start to understand how much we love and support our team. It is very interesting seeing how much this town gets behind the team. When Vosh says that he drives up from Georgia to see the Tigers play, that is some real dedication. Orangrblood has also seen many games and Don with 429 games is great. Al with close to 500 games is AWESOME ! I started going to the games in 1946, when Bud Houghton was coach. From 1948(Chuck Mathers first year) until the present time, I would say I averaged 9 games per year 9 x 60 = 540. I missed 9 games each year that I was in the service and maybe 6 games in the Shepas era.
I think 540 would be accurate.

My first game was against Cleve East in 1974. Went to my first McKinley game the same year. Quite an indoctrination. I started to regularly attend in 75 and did not miss a game between 75 and 84, when I graduated from high school. I missed a few while in college. In 89, I started going regularly again and have probably missed 5 games since. I would guess somewhere around 275 games.

Al and I have attended almost all of those "close to 500" together--with spouses and kids. Actually, Al, I counted 429--just like Tiger Don, but I missed some while I was away at college and those in the 50's are but a blur in my memory--so maybe it is close to 500.

I still get ribbed for going AWOL from guard duty to not miss a Massillon-Mckinley game (we won, lol). Article 15 = $150, lost pay = $100, watching us kick their a$$ = PRICELESS!

First game I can remember going to was the 1964 McK game. I've been to at least 100 games since then. Haven't lived in Massillon since the late '80s, and missed most of the games in the '90s due to work and family responsibilities. Started going back to a couple of games per year a few years ago.

When I worked 2nd shift ,( afternoons ), at Rubbermaid, I used to have to work Thursday 2nd shift, then pay someone $ 25 EVERY Friday, so I could work their day shift.
It cost me a couple of hundred bucks a year to attend the games while I worked there.

I remember parking down town and taking the Red, White, & Blue buses to the South endzone. That was 1976. Average 8-9 games per year and I'm around 240-270. Including these season tickets I held while living in Columbus and commuting every Friday.
BTW The Buddy La Rosa was perhaps the greatest football road trip in History.

My favorite away games were the Buddy La Rosa classic, Indianapolis, and Altoona. The fans in Altoona and Indy were great to us Massillon fans.
My least favorite away game was Middletown when they brought the game ball in by helicopter and the electric transformer caught on fire and half the lights went out. The people at the hotel were rude. The clerk at the desk told me,"This whole damn place is orange and black." The people at the stadium were nasty to us Massillon fans and it was so hot until it poured down rain.

Let's see...Season tickets since 3rd grade in 1971...Didn't start making any away games until, my Soph. year in 1978, then started making all the games until 1983 when I went in the service. Still made at least 5 games a season for the 5 years I was in. Got out in 1988 and started making all the games again (Including playoff games) Hate to bring him up too, but I missed a few games during the Shepas years, where I just wasn't able to take the time off from work.....I estimate somewhere around 330 or so games, give or take 10.
I'm like Marie and DAWGH8R, my all time favorite away games were the Buddy LaRossa Classic, the game in Indianapolis and the Altoona game. Was checking out of the Omni Hotel in Indy and met Don Kricki and Paul Maguire in the elevator on the way down. They were there to announce the Colts-Jets game that day. I had on a Massillon Tigers sweatshirt and Maguire saw it and said "The Tigers from Ohio?" "What are you doing over this way?" When I told him, he asked "Did you guys beay McKinley this year?" I explained that we hadn't played them yet and he said, "Well kick their ass!" I told him we'd sure give it our best try and as I was leaving the elevator he was telling Don Kricki how that was one of the best high school football games he'd ever seen and how we had the craziest fans anywhere.
Even though the outcome wasn't what we wished. My all time favorite away game was this past season down to Cinci against Moeller. What a blast all of us from the Massillon Proud group had!
My favorite away games were the Buddy La Rosa classic, Indianapolis, and Altoona. The fans in Altoona and Indy were great to us Massillon fans.
Marie, I remember the 1965 game at Altoona Pa. like it was yesterday. That game (for the second year in a row) was hyped as Ohio's best vs. Pensylvania's best. They chartered a train from Massillon to Altonna that we boarded at the old train depot near the old WHS. We got to ride over the famous Horseshoe Curve near Altoona. The fans there treated us "first class." ...and of course the Tigers showed them what Ohio football was all about.
See the link below for the Independent's recap of the game.

Great topic!
The first game I truly recall attending was the 1976 McKinley game. There were certainly others before that, but the ’76 McKinley game is the first one that I can well visualize.
The 1977 game vs Warren Harding stands out in my mind as well. I remember how upset my grandfather was after Warren’s come back in the forth quarter to pull out a win. As Gramps put it over a Kraus’ pizza that night “we just couldn’t stop that (Warren’s) shotgun offense!”
I don’t recall going to every game through the late 70s, but from 1980 on I can tell you that I have missed only 1 full game- the opener vs. Garfield in 1987. Also, I have missed only 1 scrimmage since 1990 and I believe that was vs. Middletown in 2002.

Although I went to several games in the 60s that I wish I could remember, the first full season I can visualize details from games was 1970- i thought every year would be like that one (I cried for a long time after the 7-6 loss to Niles in '71).
I went to every game except at Steubenville (wasn't allowed to go because of the fights) 1970-1974, then only Saturday games '75-'78 (in the ahem- Jackson band), then missed alot of games while at OSU '79-'84, but started to do alot of driving up to PBTS and other destinations around '85 when I wasn't going to school- have been up to about 6-8 regular season games each year plus all playoff games since then. So I guess a total of around 220-240 games.

Some of the first Tigers games I seen were coach Mathers teams and they were very impressive. His record was 57-3 and six straight State Championships and six victories over Canton McKinley. I thought that his teams had the best down field blocking of any high school teams that I have ever seen. In the late 1980,s after a great victory over Canton McKinley, I was at a local resturant and coach Mather was there and I got to talk with him and I told him about how I thought that his teams had he best down field blocking ,I had ever seen. He thanked me but he said that the reason that happened was,by the time I got the players from junior high, they had run those plays a thousand times and thats why they executed them so well. He was a very special person and I am glad I got to meet him. GO TIGERS

Just love this thread. Wow….what stories! There can’t be anywhere in the country that can top Tiger fans!
I would have to say that probably between the regular season and post-season I have attended around 400 games since my first taste of the Tigers in 1959 (90-0 against Barberton -- I was hooked). Yeah, yeah I know -- that makes me a “seasoned” fan.
There have been some missed over the years due to minor things like work, illness, having a baby (don’t know why that stopped me). Also, there were a few years when my daughter was in the Perry band that I went to those games instead. I would sit there during the game and look to the west and wish I could be two places at once. Even if I wasn’t at a game in person -- always tried to get to a radio or I would be there in mind and spirit.
There have been so many memorable moments over the years. I remember the great trips to Altoona on the band bus and staying in Johnstown. The trips to Steubenville, Warren, Niles (where I saw my first Tiger loss and was devastated),
and lots and lots of other stops. I remember our big win at the Rubber Bowl against Niles and all of the cowbells ringing. It was fabulous!
One of my best memories has to be the 100th game though. Marching in the alumni band, the game, everyone there, the atmosphere -- it was all surreal.
What a day! I only wish my dad (a huge Tiger fan) had lived to see all of that.
My mom has been going to the games since before 1959 and at 87 is still going to the home games so I’m sure she has seen many games that have been memorable too.
It is true -- Tiger pride is citywide and also, as seen on here on MP - COUNTRYWIDE!!

The 1964 game with Niles at the rubber bowl that TigerLily mentioned in her post was the night that Earl Bruce said, that he became a Tiger. Niles was the second game of the season and we won the game 14-8 and Earl said at the booster club,it was the night he became a Tiger. He said,at half time he looked into the players eyes and there was no way they were going to lose that game. He said ,he learned what Tiger Pride was all about. He kided us about having his bags packed if he had lost that game because he knew how serious we took our football in Massillon ! In the fourth quarter of that game,John Mulbach got hurt and Earl went out on te field to see how bad he was injured. He said,John was playing a great game and he didn,t want to take him out unless he had to. He found out that it was a hip pointer which is quite painful but not going to endanger a player health. He told us that he didn,t give John a choice about leaving the field as he turned and said how great he was playing and that we needed him in there and left the field. It was a tremendous football game in the Tigers history and one that none of us will ever forget ! GO TIGERS

i've been to every mckinley - massillon game since 1958. and i'd say since the late 70's i average two or three massillon games per season. if mckinley has an off night and massillon has a big game i'm most likely there.
