“I’m taking the approach of being a football player first, and not just a kicker,” Schott said. “I’m not going to be just an individual, I’m going to be a part of the team. The team’s the first thing on my mind, and that’s always been my approach.”

A great outlook. I hope he can get the "trifecta" in winning this year's East-West kicking competition.

Wow, it sure sounds like this kid has his head screwed tight on his shoulders. I was thinking about this. I have to believe that a high percentage of being successful in kicking is mental, and this kid sure seems to have that mental toughness that coaches crave. And the fact that he's going to start doing things to have him perceived as a player and not just a kicker speaks volumes of his attitude. I sure wish him the best this year.

I had a chance to talk to to Steve last year when we visited Pittsburgh for a game. He has the mental toughness to be a big time kicker at the college level. Good luck Steve and have a great season!! SOMEONE IS GOING TO OFFER!

FWI--- Jeff Wilkens from Austingtown Fitch who is in his 12th season or so with the ST. Louis Rams went to YSU(noone else offered) and he was kicking bombs in HS beating us on a 47 yarder with no time left on the clock in 1988. Kickers as long as they are consistant can get a scholarship and possible a nice chunk of cash!

Steve is an EXCEPTIONAL kid, and would make a FANTASTIC team CAPTAIN !!

His work ethic is second to none, and they way he handles himself on and OFF the field, makes me proud to know this TIGER !!!

Steve knew at a very early age, that this is where he wanted his life to be, and he's done it. Steve could be a "poster child" for those that wonder if hard work and dedication actually pay dividends. GREAT kid, GREAT family !!

I will be anxious to see Steve kicking on Sunday afternoons in the future !!

From what i understand from my college coaching friends is that Pitt is the front runner and may offer him soon!

The thing about a kicker is that he is not often remembered for the PATs and routine fieldgoals throughout the game.

Making or missing a field goal to tie or win a game is what people remember. That is pressure.

The same goes for the holder (excluding TP) nobody remembers all of the high or low snaps they got down, but sure remember the snap they drop.

I guess thats true with a holder dropping the ball, but no one remembers the great hold on a field goal that wins the game.

TP lived for the holding job because that was the only time he got in the game!!! He also played WR/FL but would never get passed Ramier, Troy manion, and D. Carpenter to see any action. Mark Stafford was a soph and was #4 on the depth chart and buckland would of switch back over before Porter saw the field.

And the only reason TP was 6th string was becasue we didn't have a 7th string.

I remember that game. You could've heard a pin drop. We were all stunned.

Wasn't only half of the lights working that night?
