View Full Version : Woodson Beats WV AAA Champs

The Tigers' "scrimmage" opponent for this week beat Morgantown, the West Virginia 2-time defending AAA state champs 21-10 last night. Morgantown had not lost in 28 games dating to 2003.

From the newspaper preview I found (for what it's worth), Morgantown did not look like it was rebuilding or looking at a "down" year, with 4 supposed Div. I recruits.

I could not find an article about last night's game, but did find this board, which has several threads about it. Apparently, Woodson dressed 28 guys while Morgantown dressed 100:

Excellent! Stacy and his coaches will have our guys focused on this week and hopefully can use it to get the defensive issues that I'm reading about on MP resolved quickly.

This truly is one of the biggest high school shockers in recent memory. Morgantown was supposed to be decent (listed on this Fab 50 list and topping a AAA poll).

They beat Woodson 47-12 last season. Was this week #1 game a fluke or are the Warriors for real?

Here is the Morgantown preview I alluded to earlier from West Virginia Metro News. I suspect a game story will appear Monday.

Northcentral W.Va. Prep Report: Week 1

By Kyle Wiggs of WAJR Radio

Mohigans Gun for Third Straight Title

Morgantown High will carry a 28-game winning streak into its season opener Saturday in Morgantown vs. H.D. Woodson of Washington, D.C. The Mohigans are the prohibitive favorite to win it again in 2006 with a roster that features no fewer that four D-1 prospects.

It starts with WVU recruit Charlie Russell at quarterback. Another Mountaineer recruit - defensive end Junius Lewis - will lead the defense.

Also, 6-4, 305-pound senior offensive lineman Dustin Laudermilch has committed to Ohio university. Senior running back/defensive back Derek Long is expected to get a D-1 opportunity as well.

Since 1997, the Mohigans have gone 110-9 with four state championships. The Mohigans are also in pursuit of Ansted High's state record of 36 consecutive victories. If Morgantown manages to win its first eight games this year, that record of 36 straight wins could fall Oct. 20 when MHS plays at John Marshall.

"We think that people have been gunning for us for years," says Morgantown coach John Bowers. "Everyone is going to play their best game against us, so that's nothing new. But the only way 28 in a row became 28 in a row is by winning one at a time. I expect our players will be prepared for each and every game. We will continue to take a business-like approach."

In addition to its NCAC schedule, Morgantown will play non-conference games at home against Brooke and Parkersburg South. The Mohigans will play non-conference road games at Wheeling Park and John Marshall. Morgantown opened its season against Woodson last year as well. The Mohigans won that game 47-12.

(A small twist: The last time we played Woodson in 1988, we won 46-12).

I suspect Morgantown did look ahead, but that Woodson was even able to be in the game gives some cause for concern.

This truly will be remembered as one of the biggest football upsets in recent history.

Three thoughts of arguable value...

1) The win over Morgantown is truly an upset.

2) However, Morgantown would have trouble competing successfully in Ohio's D3.

3) Woodson probably has more true athletes than Morgantown does. The problem with DC teams isnt usually athletic ability. Its the lack of quality in the overall programs.

WOW! That IS a BigTime upset. We had better give Woodson their due and scheme for the appropriately. Sounds like week 2 won't be a joke afterall.

Let's hope the warriors good fortune continues AFTER Labor Day weekend. They could turn out to be a great points team for us after all.:weightlift:

None of the federal league schools want to play us in the regular season so we have to go out and find unworthy teams that travel for revenue!!! Woodson will bring speed and athletes but will commit alot of turnovers due to discipline and lack of quality assistant coaching.(reminds me of Glenville with alittle less talent) However we can not take any game for granted!!! Some players expressed an interest in not playing cupcakes after the game on Friday!! The swagger is back in the program!!!

I also heard Woodson had a Big Power Back that could NOT be taken down on initial contact. He was running over Morgantown players like it was nothing. I also heard OUR coaching staff was AMAZED by the size of a Woodson OT... not sure the exact size but i think it was 6'5 320...

Go back and reread the title of the thread. Snapping a heavily favored defending state champion’s 28 game winning streak in their own house tells me that Woodson must be doing something right (level of completion be damned).

OUR TEAM BETTER TAKE THIS OUTFIT SERIOUSLY!

Woodson stuns Mohigans, 21-10: Win streak halted at 28

Aug. 27, 2006 (McClatchy-Tribune Business News delivered by Newstex) --
That just may have been champagne bottles you heard cracking open down in Ansted, because its state record for the longest winning streak is still intact.

It came courtesy of a shocking 21-10 upset victory Friday night by H.D. Woodson over defending state champion Morgantown High at Pony Lewis Field.

Yes, you read that right. Morgantown High, owners of the last two Class AAA state championships and a 28-game winning streak, lost to a Woodson team that either didn't know or simply didn't care about the Mohigans' hype.

The loss guarantees Ansted High's state record of 36 consectuive victories will stand for at least another year. Ansted has held the record since 1973.

"We haven't seen athletes like that," MHS coach John Bowers said after the game. "They had a sound gameplan and they came up with more plays than we did. I offer no excuses. They simply beat us, that's the bottom line."

Woodson (1-0), which travels next week to Ohio power Massillon, came up with the big plays in desperate situations and also won the battle up front. The Washington, D.C., school took a 15-0 lead at halftime and scored its first touchdown with a 63-yard touchdown pass on a play that came on a 3rd-and-40 situation.

Woodson quarterback Gabriel Prophet completed a swing pass to D'Andre Johnson on that play and Johnson broke about three tackles on his way to the end zone for a 7-0 lead. Johnson scored again with 6:44 left in the second quarter on a 12-yard run right up the middle.

Johnson finished with 175 yards rushing on 23 carries and had 67 yards receiving on two catches.

"We still haven't tackled No. 3 [Johnson]," Bowers said.

The MHS offense showed life in the second half, but turned the ball over in crucial situations. MHS quarterback Charlie Russell completed just 3-of-7 passes for 51 yards. He was intercepted on the Mohigans' first play on a tipped pass and he was sacked three times and he turned the ball over twice in the fourth quarter because of a sack from behind.

Russell did complete a 26-yard touchdown pass to J.T. Lewis with 7:11 left in the third quarter that made the score, 15-7.

MHS then forced a punt and drove down the field again until the drive was held and Garrett Bradlyn kicked a 40-yard field goal to make it, 15-10.

That would be as close as the Mohigans could get, as Prophet found Tony Coleman for a 14-yard TD pass with 9:39 left in the game to seal the outcome.

Remember what i said we will win by at least 3tds!!! West Virginia football is like New Philly football!! We are the far more superior team. I have been researching every team on the schedule for months and the toughest games are Warren and the bulldogs!!! We are much much better than we think!!! I keep telling you that these kids have the heart and spirit that the program needs! Refuse to lose-- 3 loses since freshman to X, mckinley, Eds(fresh)!!

I don’t necessarily disagree with your assessment monte. We SHOULD blow this team out of the stadium IF we prepare and IF we execute. It’s week 2 now; our Team needs to get down to business. I have the utmost confidence that will happen.

Note form the BC meeting last night. Watched segments of the Morgantown/ Woodson game. Morgantown could not match up with the size, speed and athleticism of Woodson. That won’t be the case for us.

MTown
08-29-2006, 09:56 AM
Woodson's RB is no joke. They have speed and athleticism, plus the right side of their line is 300+ lbs. This will not be the cakewalk that North Park was. If we don't tackle well they are going to break some big runs. That is exactly what happened to Morgantown and is the reason they lost. This team also takes lots of chances...they will throw trick plays at us, especially on special teams.

GrowlingTiger87
08-29-2006, 10:00 AM
BUT, MTown, they gave up 10 points. I predict we'll have 10 points or more early in the 1st qtr. Don't think they'll shut US down, and I think our D is most likely better than Morgantown's. We WILL wear them out. That is my prediction, and I'm sticking to it.

MTown
08-29-2006, 10:04 AM
Hey, I'm not saying we are going to lose. I want us to have a dominant performance and just pointing out that to do that, we are going to have to tackle well. We can't look at this game as just another scrimmage or else they will suprise us a little. Their RB is going to Virginia Tech...he's no slouch.

GrowlingTiger87

I do agree with you, MTown on that point. I don't think our coaching staff will let the kids take this one lightly, and I personally think we'll light up the scoreboard on this team.

monte81
08-29-2006, 01:06 PM
No big deal we will dominate Woodson! I talked to Darion and explained to him that the seniors will have to step up big time!! The problem with the tackling is "the big hit"! We have to wrap, and run through ball carriers-- you will see a differant "D" on Saturday!!! I will listen on the radio-- to much money to come see us destroy a team that is not worthy to be on the schedule!!!!!!! I will see everyone in Cincinnati!!!!

Sounds like it is going to be a test for our Tigers this week -- which is exactly what we need going into the Moeller game.

I wonder if they brought any fans with them to Morgantown and if they will travel to Massillon?

Hope we remember -- You snooze...you lose. http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/indifferent0020.gif

Now go out there and beat Woodson!!!

TigerswillbeTigers

This game is a coaching staffs nightmare. It's routinely reffered to as a "trap" game. The Tigers are coming off of a State championship game the year before, a 68-6 blowout of their first opponent, and are hearing, reading, and experiencing first hand some preperations for the BIG Moeller game at PBS in Cincy!
Historically that adds up to a coaches nightmare when trying to get the players to focus on the next opponent. The saving grace this week may be the fact that Woodson pulled off a huge upset against Morgantown last week! Lets all hope that the players take this, and every opponent seriously, and 1 at a time! I have NO doubt that coach Stacy and his staff will do exactly that!
Go Tigers!!!!

Believe it or not, I thought the Hamilton game had all the makings of being the biggest "trap" game of the year due to the fact that it falls between the big game with Moeller, and the even bigger game at Mentor! Thank goodness they were ranked in the top 25 in USA todays poll!

I am loving all of this hype. Beatnig this team will be just what the doctor (coach) ordered!! This win should get the team in the right frame of mind to get set for the teams we know for a fact will be tough. This running back will most definately need to be wrapped up when tackled. That is my main concern but it sounds like is on the coach's short list of things to tune up, and I am sure it will be corrected. Cant wait to see Dailey show this RB why he is going to Penn State!! Should be a great game, we will need a full house to show these 28 kids who's house they are in!!
