This morning, I could not help but be pained to see numerous youths using the 'N' word during a walk in town today. I was sickened to even hear that vicious word, which I heard an eye-opening 25 times! I was with my dad yesterday and heard child-age children using that dreaded word.
I am a black male and I don't condone the usage of such a word. As a matter of fact, it is a word so detestable that it should not even be used by anyone.
Whoever the youths were, they were lucky that they were out of the house because if they were inside the house using that word, I am sure the youths would have gotten worse than a lecturing.........
I understand completely. I hate the N word. I notice that it is many of the youth today. It's their mentally. To them it's no big deal.
Last summer during two a days I reprimanded my cousin's grandson and one of the "star" athletes on the team. I told them and also coach Stacy. It is uncalled for.
The rap music the young people listen to these days is deplorable. I have talked to other youth on the track team and basketball about the use for the word. Some have apologized and when they would see me, they would give me hug or made sure I didn't hear.
One has to respect him/herself in order to gain it.

I'm curious. Were the kids black or white? For some reason it's OK when the blacks say it to describe themselves but if white folk say it we are freaking crucified.
Ms. V you actually went and told Coach Stacy?? Hmmmm.

I was wondering the same thing Carle, were these kids white, black or other? It's interesting that if a white person criticizes, they're racist. If a black person criticizes, it may be ok. Obviously, no one is doing anything about it anyways. Tell us more, Keno.

Accurately stated! I have never been able to figure out the reasoning on this one. Unless, the black folks feel they are entitled to say it, which still doesn't make much sense to me.

The use of the N-word by black people against black people in America is a problem and shows no real respect as individuals first; let alone, a people that share a darker skin tone. Not all black people are "Common" with each other, but for those that are this "N-word" is part of the slang (I just dated myself) . It is almost as if it is a double negative slam, even though some would say it is a term of endearment. A term of endearment? That's my N. As if to say, "That's my brother!" with pride. Something is way wrong with this picture!
I would be confused too if I used a word that some other ethnicity were using and crucified for it. It is almost in a sense a "SETUP"! If the wrong skin-colored person uses it, a fight is on. Maybe that person used it as a term of endearment? Sound strange? Of course, then why use the N-word to begin with? Black on black using the N-word needs to stop. We do more damage to ourselves than anyone else, and for that fact, why would anyone else truly respect you if you can not respect yourselves while respecting others? I have Italian friends that use the D-word. I feel odd using it and very uncomfortable when they use it on each other. So, What if I said it to them? Shouldn't I get my butt kicked? N-word/ D-word it sounds as if we are in the second grade out in the school yard during recess!
Sometimes the truth hurts, but it needs to be said before the pendulum swings too far in this world of craziness...My father told me something when I was a kid and I never forgot this.......... My dad graduated from Harding High in 1965. He said some black people are like crabs in a barrel. If you watch a crab trying to climb out watch the others get together and pull that one crab back in. In essence, the mentality is don't better yourself or you will get it, we will pull you back. Same mentality with the N-word, a know your place amongst blacks. How sad, you would think we not just as blacks but human beings would have been and should be much farther ahead than where we are right now, tackling even more serious issues out there. We never really grow up do we?

TigerCoach,
The kids using the words were elementary school aged black kids and they were discussing the school year and people in particular. It was various topics they were talking about.
This isn't the first time I have come across something like this. I don't want to put it on here where this other example happened for the fear of alienating anyone but check your PM's.
Thanks.
My thoughts on it...I don't care if you are black or white, if anyone uses that 'N' word, they should be punished to the fullest extent is possible. Imminent punishment should occur. Parents need to take their sons/daughters aside and talk to them about that demeaning word, that should never be used by anyone.

Keno: I agree with most that you say on this subject, however suggesting that someone should be punished to the fullest extent possible is going over-board. In this country people can say things, whether we agree with it or not. When people start to demand punishment for speech we are headed to a "slippery slope" of control. If we started to punish people for the N word where would it end. I think we should look at better parenting and other things to help lead the next generation.

Massillon Catholic,
A devout poster in cherished, heralded, royal, intense, superb, tradition.
You are right I went overboard in saying fullest extent possible. I have a tendency of doing that when I get too charismatic. However if I were a parent and my child used that word...I'd take a stand on it one way or another. I don't know what I'd do but I'd deal with it.
If a child says the 'N' word in the parental household and the parents permit it, then something is not right. If they don't say it in the parental household and use it in society, then again, something is not right.
But then again it all comes down to how the child is raised.

there's where the problem lies...with the parents. If we have parents saying it, why would the children not think it's OK. We have parents doing drugs in front of their children. If the parents don't lead by a good example the kids don't have much of a chance.
I'm curious. Were the kids black or white? For some reason it's OK when the blacks say it to describe themselves but if white folk say it we are freaking crucified.

I most certainly did. Yes the two football players were black. So was my son and so am I. I told Coach Stacy about it and told him who they were and he was to address that. It is inappropriate, deplorable, disrepectful, ignorant,
etc. Coach also thanked me for coming to him. In addition the same two had placed their drink cups on the newly paved parking lot. I told them first of all they shouldn't have done it and I told them Washington High was my alma mater and did not appreciate them littering. Needless to say the picked the cups up. My husband and I were waiting for son to come out. I mentioned I should say something. He didn't think I would but I did. Told Coach about both incidents.
I have those young people it has to stop. I agree that if you're black it's okay to use the N word. Hello is not okay no matter what the color/race it.

There are blacks look like whites I have many in my family, however my mother (redhead& freckles) black always told us not to use the word or think we were better than some else due to a lighter skin color. It doesn't matter all of use bleed red (well some of us Tiger fans) bleed orange & black

The word makes me cringe, regardless of who is using it and regardless of the context it's being used. The word is not used in our household.

A deplorable word and one that I am happy living without. Fortunately for us, it is not a word known to the Swiss unless they have traveled the US alot and even then don't use it as they know how degrading it can be.
But....they have their own problems in the land of chocolate and cheese. There are also some downright disgusting words used to describe different minorities living in Switzerland. Ignorance knows no boundaries, huh?!
