For those who took my last post the wrong way:
Now that I have done some more research on these new football coachs at the middle school, I have found out that these new coaches are going to be pretty good. These coachs have been picked out specifically by Coach Stacey. I still do not understand why the old coachs were not re-signed, but i guess it can not be changed now. I think that they were all great coachs that loved the game of football. What these new coachs are like, I don't know. I just hope that what ever happened did happen for a good reason and the best will end up for massillon.
What do you think will happen?
Why do you think that they didn't re-sign Mike Skelly?

It was obvious to me that from the start Tom wants his people running the entire program from the top down to the middle school level. Teaching the basics of the game. This way by the time the kids get to the jv and varsity level they will have the system down cold and not think just make plays. Thats how you run a program.

Does that make sense when he has made it clear that he would like to move to the college level again? A long run in the playoffs this year and he'll be gone.

I agree with your post. But, it seems that the coaches we have had do not stay long term or our moved out by a bad season or two. Massillon has always been a great stepping stone for coaches. So agree that it is best to have the same system throughout our feeder teams, but in reality it may not work.

I don't believe Coach Stacy had anything to do with the hiring/firing (?). Isn't the principal in charge of that? With that being said, I know of the new MMS coordinator and not only does he have a vast knowledge for the game of football, but he played big time college ball and knows what Massillon is all about as well. He'll do a fine job. He's young. enthusiastic, will instill discipline and will be fine! Did I like Coach Skelly? Sure! But I have no control over what happened and I can't rewind time to prevent it. The one thing I won't do is make bad pre-evaluations and judgements without even meeting or observing the new coaches.
Moving on....
The feeder system DOES work. You don't want to be teaching kids something new each and every year. That is (a) not smart and (b) unrealistic.

There are a number of factors that make a coach an effective leader of student athletes:
Leadership: A coach must be able to lead his/her players by example, to teach them to be leaders as well, and to teach them to hold themselves to a high standard.
Integrity: A coach must also have integrity, in very short terms, "Do what you say you are going to do."
Teacher: A coach must be a teacher in all areas of his/her area of expertise. This is not limited to the field of play, but should also be evident in the coach's dealings with the players in other ways as well.
Encouragement: A coach must know how to encourage his/her players. To build them up when they are down, and to help them fight through tough times on and off the field.
Team Builder: A coach must be a team builder. He /she must make sure that ALL players know that no one player, regardless of skill level, is above the TEAM. A great TEAM will always outperform a group of "talented" athletes that all play as individuals.
Motivator: A coach must be able to instill in his/her players the willingness to do what is necessary to get the job done. To make sure that they have their teammates back, and in our specific circumstance, "To know what it means to be a Massillon Tiger".
I could go on, and I'm sure others could add to this list. My point in this post is this:
We had a coaching staff at MMS, led by Mike Skelly, that gave us all these things and more. Mike was not alone in his style of coaching. The fact that his assistant coaches chose to stand behind him tells you all you need to know about him, and them. He was successful in building a team of players, as well as coaches that shared these beliefs.
In short, from a parent of a former player of Mike's, I want to say thanks. You helped my son become a better player, but more importantly.... a better person. Thanks to Mike and all the coaches. The new coaches will have some very big shoes to fill.
And oh by the way...... as much as any of us, you can bet that Mike will be hoping that the new coaches succeed, for the sake of the future Tiger's in their care.

hubman7 you are exactly right and if all coaches, parents, admin, teachers, and all educational staff followed that brief description we would have the best school system, community, and football team in the country. GREAT POST!!

So Who Are The New Coaches?
They had a meeting tonight for the football players and parents for this season. The only ones there were the principal, Oberhauser (AD), and the new coach Kurzen (sp?). A young man who played in college. They said there would be 8 coaches, but were still in the process of hiring/interviewing for those spots.
This young man has his work cut out for him. I wish him, the new staff (whoever that may be) and the kids good luck.

Who is Oberhauser and what is he the AD of?
The Kurzen Family are GREAT people. Coach Kurzen was an awesome athlete in his day. I wish he would have played for Massillon. It is good to see him in our district and I hope EVERYONE lets him do his thing.

Are you telling me that the middle school has an Athletic Director? This is absurd. When I was in school the gym teachers handled everything, that was their job. I suppose this is another Administrative position.

I would guess that this is just a supplement like the coaches get, but I could be wrong.

If you're talking about Jim Kurzen the former Tuslaw standout in Basketball that went on to a solid college career, the program is in excellent hands.
The family has been one of west Starks finest for years!

Well, that would be alright. But, if its full-time AD, that's just nuts!

Mr. Oberhauser is a sixth grade teacher at MMS. There are four volleyball, basketball, football teams, plus cross country, track, etc.. I think it requires someone to coordinate all those activities.

Yes, that is the guy. I have heard people speak highly of his family as well. Hopefully he will continue in and build upon the standards that Mike Skelly has tried to implement at the MMS. Hopefully he will have some assists. soon. July is coming up fast.
Does anyone know if he has played other sports besides basketball? Just curious.

I believe that he played in the late 70's or early 80's although I could be wrong. Why were there so many negative posts on here when the changed was announced? It seems like everybody likes the guy.

OK, I'm feeling a little left out here.
He was a basketball standout that also played baseball.
Isn't he the new football coach?
Did he ever play football?

The negative posts were not directed at the new coach, which was stated more than a few times. The negative posts were directed towards how Skelly was treated.

Seeker! I'm not certain about whether Jim ever played football or not, and I'm pretty sure you're not asking that question because you feel playing the game is a prerequisite to having the ability to be a football coach, but the one thing I can assure you is that Jim will be an asset to MMS and more than likely a very good coach and teacher no matter what sport he's involved with.

Could the "powers to be" be laying the ground work to make him the BB Coach?
I believe the new coach is Jim Kurzen's son and he played football D-1 at one of the Michigan schools. Which one I'm ???? One heck of an athlete in all sports while at Tuslaw.

The Tuslaw connection at MMS comes from the principal who graduated and played basketball there.

The new coach is jims son, he played his d1 football at central michigan. The Kurzen family is all around A1, and i believe Jims son will do an outstanding job.
