This has been a wonderful event over the years and it will be sad to see it go. The article says they're working on a fix, and I predict that at least the fireworks will go on at another location.

Jobdone - your wife is on the committee, and I believe was an early chairman of the whole show. Any inside information to pass along? Thanks to her and the others for volunteering their time to put on such a traditional down-home celebration.

Aren't they building the new baseball field at the park?

Will they still be permitted to shoot off fireworks after Tiger touchdowns?

That was my first thought.

From what I understand, the rules affecting the 4th of July fireworks have absolutely nothing to do with the TD Bombs.....They should not be affected at all.

It won't feel like the 4th of July w/o the picnic in the park. I've been attending that event for over 20 years!
Hmmm...I know! Maybe Mr. David can buy a new park to have it at!:2thumbsup:

From the Inde Editorial section (in favor of keeping the event at another location):

My wife Nancy Halter, myself, Skip Demmer and Larry Steffe were the original organizers. We thought it was a shame that those of us that didn't have a boat on Lake Erie or cotages on other lakes and rivers and couldn't afford the country club fireworks shows. And those of us that remembered the fun we had at the Community Picnics ay Meyers Lake and the high school band concerts and fireworks displays inside the stadium. Remember the firework cannons that shot back and forth with explosions that shook the west stands.

The Vetrans orginizations ran these shows untill the costs almost broke them. They did a great job for many years. Our first "Picnic in the Park", was held at the Kof C grounds on Cherry Road. It was almost as good as the Labor Day celebration we had there as part of the Sesqicentenial celebration in 1976. The next year we moved it to Stadium Park. My wife was in charge for the first two years and we were both on the committee for most of the 25 years.

I will name some of the chairmen and committee members who contributed the most to the great picnics we have had, ( I know I will miss some so forgive me if I do) Special mention: Tim Ryan (the stage at the park is named after him), Larry Steffe, Rick Alex, Nancy Halter, Bill Dewald. Glen Gamber Margy Vogt, Ron Meimer, Billy Hynd, Stefee McGiness, Dave and Sally Crookston, Glen Weirich and his wife. I know I left many out of this list. This was just off the top of my head.

The committee is worn out after 25 years and decided that this would be the last year unless someone else stepped forward. The oil tanks that are now located in the North parking lot put an end to firework displays in the stadium area. The only shells allowed to be fired were 5 inch shells. These don't go very high and are rather boring. The football game shells are 5 inch or less. They meet the restictions.

I hope this answers some of your questions. Feel free to contact me for any other information.
