With prices expected to climb, I thought it would be good to create a single thread where people can vent and post helpful information. Here are a few price reporting websites:

I payed $8.95 for a mixed drink the other evening. I could have purchased 3 gallons of gasoline for the same amount of money. It would have been a better deal!

It is $2.89 down here in N.C.

A month or two ago I left to go to the store and one gas station was at $2.61. When I came back home it was $2.67. The very next day it was already up to $2.73. Two days later, on the weekend, it was up to $2.79.

Gas is $3.19 in C-bus!!! I am very lucky to work 3 miles from work but others are hurting down here because most jobs are 15+ miles away from home everyday with the normal being 30/45 miles if you work for Honday or in the warehouse industry. This is getting crazy and prices are projected to jump up to $4.00 plus in a few months.

There are fewer and fewer different gas stations. Everywhere you look there is a Marathon station. Sometimes two -- right across from each other. Not much competition.

Then they raise gas to say $3.19. Then lower it to $3.09 or a little less. We rush to save those few cents. Then they raise it to $3.39 and lower it to $3.19. Hey, we are getting a bargain! This mind game just continues as they gradually get us used to higher and higher prices. Where will it end?

Seems we are pretty much at their mercy. http://www.dachsie.org/vbb/images/smilies/pull_hair.gif

I was in New Jersey Friday and Saturday, where gas was $2.73 per gallon. By state law, no one in NJ may self-serve. Gas must be pumped by station attendants. So even with the cost of employees, gas is almost 50 cents cheaper there.

$3.00 a gallon in Hickory, NC. It was $3.20 when I was in Statesville, NC today.

I have heard places in California may hit $5.00 by Memorial Weekend.

I read here that gas was still $3.19 at a couple of places. GetGo had already raised to $3.49 so I went to Super-K. They were still at the lower price but, as you might imagine, lines were long. I decided to try it (with the engine off while in line of course). The woman ahead of me goes to pay and doesn't return for several minutes. The pump wasn't working. Over half of the pumps weren't working. But there was no way for people to tell they were out of service. Then I see a guy with "the numbers" going to change the price on the sign. After giving him a piece of my mind (after all I would have been already gone if most of the pumps were working), he assured me they would give me the lower price.

Who would have thought there would be a day when we would be scrambling for $3.19 gas? I feel old.

Prices are expected to peak in July, then decline a bit. Of course that's if we don't have hurricanes, a spike in demand, terrorist activities near supplies, or one of many other reasons we hear for the increases.

To the remaing 25% of Bush's supporters, including those of you here on MP complaining about gas prices:

It seems that our president is willing to continue his allegiance to his Big Oil buddies. Who cares about us poor schmos!

By Dara Kam

Palm Beach Post Capital Bureau

Thursday, May 24, 2007

TALLAHASSEE — Republican Gov. Charlie Crist lashed out Wednesday at the Federal Trade Commission, accusing the five-member oversight panel appointed by President Bush of not doing its job regulating fuel prices.

Crist charged that the petroleum industry has created a monopoly,

His comments put him at odds with Bush, who has threatened to veto a bill, passed Wednesday by the U.S. House of Representatives, that would impose hefty fines and criminal penalties for price-gouging at the pump.

"They're getting record profits in this industry," Crist said in response to questions about a letter he signed Monday along with 21 other governors asking Congress to investigate the recent spike in gasoline prices.

"It reminds me of the insurance industry, if you want to know the truth, where you have record profits by the oil company, yet they're charging more than they've ever charged in the history of our state," he said, referring to Exxon Mobil's $9.3 billion first-quarter earnings. "It doesn't make sense, except that they're doing it because they can."

"President Bush is not doing his job of regulating fuel prices"...

Well yeah, no kidding.....because that industry was DEREGULATED. It is not the job of the office of the President, no matter what party is in power, to regulate publicly traded companies. It is only his duty, through the TFC, to ensure that these companies aren't breaking the law. If these guys were breaking the law, don't you think politicians would be screaming out loud to break the story and take credit for busting them up? It would be a free ticket to the White House. But it doesn't work that way. If Clinton or Obama were elected President tomorrow, the gas prices wouldn't drop. It's not a political issue.

It might be a monopoly situation because of the barriers to entry. If you believe that, then it is fair to criticize the President for not having the FTC look into it. But as long as ConocoPhillips, Exxon, and the rest remain as publicly traded companies, the government cannot enact price controls because that would be against free markets.

Yeah, yeah, yeah....we all understand this. The point of my post was to point out that the House of Rep's is trying to help us with a bill that applies penalties for price gouging. Mr. Bush has threatened to veto it. He has an opportunity here to do his job and help us, but is choosing not to. Why would this be??? Any anwser to that?

Please re-read the article and focus on the BOLDED sentences, especially the first one. Crist claims that the FTC, which is appointed by Bush, is not doing its job of regulating.

MTown
05-24-2007, 03:48 PM
The FTC is not supposed to regulate the oil companies. That's the point. If the FTC finds that the oil companies are doing something illegal...NAIL THEM. Congress can pass all the laws they want to impose penalties for price gouging, but if the oil companies aren't price gouging then nothing happens. You cannot force a public company to lower their prices because consumers think they are too high.

If the FTC thinks that the oil companies have a monopoly, then you have something to work with. Companies can be broken up to foster more competition which should bring lower prices. But you also have to take into consideration all the prohibitive environmental laws already on the books that make it difficult for new companies to come in and compete with the established big boys.

Bush could sign that bill tomorrow and nothing would happen because the FTC cannot find evidence of price gouging. This has been going on for years. Every summer there is a congressional investigation into price gouging and every year nothing turns up.

If you really want to help gas prices come down, we need to make it easier for any company to build new refineries so we are not subjected to shortages of gas because we lose capacity during a hurricane or refinery problems.

THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE.

Due to an obvious error... A Marathon in Akron had their pump price for 89 grade set at $2.49 per gallon. 95% of our folks at my office either filled up, or topped off, saving $1.00 per gallon.

Someone in the gas station told someone else that it had to be a mistake, but their pumps get updated electronically from headquarters...
