It has to do with the human biological clock.

You can add to this the uprising at Kent State that culminated in the death of four students on May 4.

It fits into the whole "rites of Spring" mentality.
Sometimes its innocent, like having goldfish eating contests, skipping school to play Frisbee in the park, etc.

Sometimes it takes a more violent turn.
