That should fuel a few more weeks of Jack Rose talk.

I'd like to see former Massillon standout linebacker, defensive guru, and current Alliance athletic director Mike "The Tiger" Silverthorn apply for the position.

He has had phenomenal success during his tenure as the Alliance AD.

Does anybody other than myself have SERIOUS reservations about Fortner heading the search for our next AD? For some reason, I am not getting a warm fuzzy feeling all over.:help:

Since the AD will be reporting to him, Fortner will be heading the search.

Well thats just Tigerrific.

Lets just say I, myself, would feel a little more comfortable w/ Blosser handling this one himself. Or Stacy, the Mayor, Smitty...

Didja catch this nugget in the article: "possibly even conduct interviews with candidates"?

Like they might hire a candidate without an interview?

I wonder if Fortner will only consider non-Massillon residents for the job?

I'm not sure that Fortner accepts calls or would interview non Massillon
residents for athletic purposes... :glare:

I agree! What in the world does he know about athletic administration? Especially at a higher level school like Massillon. This isn't the same AD job as at Fairless or Jackson, where you split up the athletic budget for each team each year and make sure the bus arrives to take the team to away games.

This job is like a small college position. It involves marketing, fundraising, public relations, tournament management, financial management, etc. (notice I left out recruiting!) I would look for someone with either college athletic department experience or some complex, or multi-tasking experience at a larger school, not simply a successful coach.

My leading candidate is Todd Osborne. He already lives in Massillon, he attended Perry schools and played sports, has coached both boys' and girls high school sports. Won the 1997 Girls' State Title in Basketball while coaching at Wadsworth. He also has a Superintendent license, and has been an Assistant Principal for the last 5 or 6 years. He's only 40 years old (+/-1) and has a solid plan to help the students of Massillon City Schools.

Someone please correct me if I mis-read the story, but didn't the article say the AD will report to the Principal, thus the reason that Fortner is involved in interviewing candidates? If so, in another article it says Fortner to move to Asst. Super, so why is he in charge of the interview since he won't be the prinicpal anymore. Perhaps, I mis-undertstood the article.

I know football is king, but I hope we get someone who realizes there are sports other than football and that we have girls who want to participate in sports too.

I agree with the idea that football should not be the only focus, but we do offer a variety of women's sports and do not prohibit girls from participating in them if they choose to do so, as far as I know anyhow. What did you mean by that?

Without football there would be "no other sports"!

What if a girl wanted to play football? Would she be allowed by the district without prejudice? I remember one played at McK about 5 years ago. Also I heard a team we played last year the place kicker was a girl.

We had a female football player YEARS ago at Longellow. It's been at least 8 years since the name Cunningham wore a Poets jersey. Her parents own/owned the Quick print in downtown Massillon.

God rest both Amanda's and her father's soul, Joel, who passed 7 months apart back in '03. The mother, Sarita, still runs the print shop.

I have been told before that at the highschool level, WHS does not allow females to play football, nor males to cheer.

When I was at WHS from 1991 to 1994 we had guys cheer with the girls on several occassions but they was just part time deal.

If they dont allow girls to play football wouldn't make them sexist? If a girl can play and is good at it then why not let her play.

I remember when the girl played at McKinley the guys was kinda upset that she was on the team and really let her have it during practices trying to get her to quit but she took the hits and kept getting back up and delivering some hard hits herself.

This reminds me of a story my grandmother told me about my Aunt. My aunt would often play backyard football with her brothers and neighborhood boys. One of which showed up at my grandmothers door step with his father and whined and complained to my grandmother to tell my aunt not to tackle so hard. lol

MTigers006,

That girl was Rachel Dovidio you are referring to. Canton McKinley recently had a girl on the team this year in junior Carrie Hall.

Thankyou MUCSteelers.

My point is if they can play let em play :-)

Back to subject: I think Todd Osborne would be a good choice here. My reasoning is he also has a superintendent license and he could fill the second Asst. Superintendent postion as well as AD and we can kill two birds with one stone and save some money that we can give the teachers a well deserved raise and added security at our schools, exspecially MMS.

Wouldn't a better statement be " searching a for AD at Washington High School" rather than searching for Al Hennon's replacment? They could go to Whiskey Ranch and find a replacement for Al Hennon!

Warren had a gal kicker, not sure if it was last year or 2 years ago, I do know she kicked against us in 2005 but I am not sure she was on the team in 06.

Banks,

Warren Harding High School's kicker in 2005 was Alena Westover. She graduated in 2006.

Yes, there was girl kicker on one the teams from last year (can't remember)
what team. Bryan Sheegog blocked the kick and got ribbed about it. He didn't know the kicker was a girl. He was embrassed after he found out.

He was sooo cute.

That's my boy:heee:
