I was wondering if anyone knows the reason or reasons for changing our defensive scheme this year? Slider, out!!!

I believe that stacy came here wanting to run the 3-4 defense. But because of coming late they ran the 50 shade against the spread and ran 3-4 off and on. He has said that he will run the 3-4 full time. He has had more time to teach it.
That is my take on it.

a 3-4 defense is designed for speed and Stacey always likes to get pressure off the edges on passing situations! It also allows for a two deep safety formation because the olbs basically eliminates the strong safety having to cover short outs and dump passes!!!

I thought our d was very good last and had tremendous pressure. I dont like the new 3-4, but hey we'll see how things work out week 3.

I've never been a fan of the 3-4 defense either, in spite of its recent surge in popularity in the NFL. I'll grant that differences between the 3-4 and the base 50 defenses can be subtle, esp. when pass coverage assignments are known.

FWIW: I hope our defense is capable of absolutely shutting-out the weaker opponents and holding our stronger competition to 2 scores or less per game... something not seen here since the Mike Currence & Bob Commings eras.

Check the average points per game scored on the 88 defense!!! We gave up 13.4-- with a loaded schedule in Owens 1st year( Coach Lec was D coordinator I dont know how that ranked up there in the last 25 years but we were pretty good!!

I just hope that our young corners will allow our safeties and olbs to be head hunters!!!! I think they will be fine-- there hungry I know that!!!

Our corners need to be aggressive, and knock guys when they try to leave the line !!! We need to disrupt the timing of the passing plays!!!:gogogo:
