View Full Version : A Raider view of Massillon's Football team..

Nothing bad folk's, but a perspective of how I see you..........

When Harding and Massillon square off in football you are going to get your monies worth. Very rarely (it has happened) there is a blow out. Massillon did it to Harding a while ago and it was not pretty for us (52-2?). We had one too a few years ago in Massillon (I believe 35-13?). Not a big blowout as the first score mentioned. The point is it is usually a nail biter!

When Massillon's offense takes the field, I get a little intense. Massillon marches up and down the field throwing for long yardage. Maybe I am more critical of my team, but my offense seems to take forever. Call it eating the clock etc. Eat all the clock you want, but if you do not score enough points you are not going to win the game I mumble to myself--of course!

Massillon is good at balance. Run, pass, trick play, something you never seen before, and something invented. Not necessarily in that order to further confuse you. What I notice as well, Massillon takes the lead early too. Call it getting used to your opponents ways somewhat, before you make the changes, but scoring early, can be a teams death nail and catching up may not be that easy. Last game before I knew it, Massillon was up 10-0! It was the first quarter. Had it not been for the defense doing its job, we were not in the game. Anyway that is my short viewpoint of Massillon's team. I do not remember seeing you guys eating the clock. I see you passing a lot. I would love to see you play Cardinal Mooney in a regular season game, especially now that they seem to have a decent team. They even tell you what they are going to do, before you play them. Just run up the middle, and try to stop us. They kind of remind me of the old HOGS from the Washington Redskins when they had John Riggins.

I do not know what my young Raiders are going to look like this coming season, hope to give Massillon a good game. I find myself enjoying more and more of these matchups as high school football is quickly replacing my old pro-football cares. Love to hear your thoughts Tigers.........

Most definitely an intense heated rivalry. And physical. Like playing Mckinley twice. Intimidating fan base. In fact all 3 could switch jerseys & coats most years and no one would know. Just great skill athletes, and a bunch of guys who just want to take your head off. The other thing that stands out alot are those last second heartbreaking defeats. Trust me you still have all kinds of hell to pay for those. But hey good luck next year.

I always enjoy watching a good Massillon-Warren game. It is one of my favorite places to play on the road, it is a hostile atmosphere and fun to be a part of.

Warren dealt Massillon some of its most stinging defeats: Our only losses in 1958 and '60. Leo Strang never won at Warren in three tries. Of course the two heartbreaking losses in 2002, thanks in large part to Mario Manningham. They also gave us our only loss in '51 (one of only three losses suffered by Chuck Mather in six years). Our most famous win has to be the "clock" game in 1957 when, after a clock malfunction, Joe Sparma threw a TD pass to Clyde Childers in the waning moments of the game. Another great game was when we dominated the great Paul Warfield in 1959. Though not very significant historically, the 2004 Warren game, up there, was a classic. Our kids played their hearts out, only to lose 15-12 in a rain-soaked game. What a great, great rivalry!

Don't forget the heartbreaker in '71- losing 8-7 on a 30 yard run (and I believe the 2-point conversion on a reverse?), which was for the state title.

Also the two 7-7 ties in '78 and '80.

The '60 loss was on the day I was born. Forever marked by that fact!

From my perspective, that game along with UM upsetting OSU in 1969 were the two greatest football games I have ever seen.

Keep in mind we had not beaten you in Massillon since 1944 at that point.

Tom Batta told us that the Harding kids were so exhausted after the game that they just lay on the floor sucking air.

What a nail biter!! Doug Stubbs "end around" for the 2 point conversion was a great call and executed perfectly. I think Coach Batta had a strong feeling there might not be another chance to take the lead.

I thought for sure Warren would blow it had the end of the game. With something like 54 seconds to go Massillon took over at their own 3-4 yard line and moved down close enough to try, and just nearly missed, kicking the winning field goal. They managed their time like a seasoned pro team. WHEW!!!

That was Warren Harding's FIRST state championship after being so close several times before. There's nothing sweeter than the first one!!

One of the starting guards, Michael Capellas went on to a very fine career as CEO of Compaq, Hewlett-Packard and MCI.

Besides our rivalry with McKinley, the Massillon vs Warren rivalry is one of the best in the area.

Every WGH/Massillon game I ever played in was physical and hard hitting and viewing them are fun also. Someone said its like playing McKinley twice--correct because WGH always has a solid running game and attacking defenses similar to us and McKinley--we pass alittle more than both however.

Warren 1st or Submariner--- whatever happened to Clayton Waite??? Great QB in the late 80's. I only got to him once and a few QB pressures in our game in 1988 because I had a huge soph named Corey Stringer blocking me the entire game. I know he signed with UM and then transfered to Clemson I think??

Monte - Clayton Waite scored the "controversial" touchdown against Massillon in the 1988 game which led to the ending of the series 'til Shep and McD renewed it in 2002 I believe.. I know the UM coach for our area asked for the tape of that game which I had but I don't believe UM ever offered Waite.

I don't know whatever became of him but I will ask around. In fact, I know someone who should know. Yes, he was strong, mobile and had a rifle for an arm.

Well--he really didn't get into the endzone but I never cry over spilled milk--- It was a great game. I was putting pressure on him big time in the 4th quarter and he still kept throwing strikes!!! Stringer was a beast but the pass interference calls were some BS!!!!
I believe Waite went to UM for a year or so and transfered!
Great HS rivalry!!!

Monte - Here's the rest of the story...................He went to South Carolina and started as a freshman. He then became homesick and transferred to Kent State where he had a decent career.

I recruited for Michigan back then and knew (well....thought!) he never went there. :sunny:

No slight to anyone... but I'd love to see Steubenville back in the mix with Massillon, Warren, & Canton McKinley.

I cannot help but believe that the Big Red would be quite competitive with the group.

No; I'm not wishing for a reincarnation of the ol' AAC. I'm quite aware that Niles & Alliance are not currently "up to snuff."

You get a rush, when you see all that black and orange on one side of the field, and black and gold on the other. I do not know how Massillon does it so well to schedule both Harding and McKinley back to back. I would have a serious migrane and find the nearest hospital after the two weeks were completed. A head coach must undergo some serious scrutiny and questions like: Are you sure you know what you are about to get into? But for us fans, it is "Live", intense, and better than a lot of college football played on Saturday I must say. I enjoy the drive down to Massillon, check out the area, and PBTS is something wonderful to see. I have read about the upgrades to Massillon coming and in progress. Someone in Ohio has to set the bar and it is good to see. There is no jealousy, what is the sense? It is a natural progression of each school to get better, and someone has to go first--right? I think Massillon is going to have a good team this year (as I bite my finger nails). Of course out loud I wish Massillon a good game but secretively I hope you guys are human and err a little bit more please. I will never forget the punter you had one year that punted the ball so high, our returner had to turn around, run back 20 more yards just to get the ball. People on the Harding side were ooooooooooooohing! It was really something to see!!!!! I think Massillon and Harding should never ever end this rivalry. We really lost something special when Harding and Reserve combined. People in Warren were really literally sick! I miss it too, but have to move on. There is no other game on the schedule as important to us as the Massillon game. You have a terrific fan base, that travels everwhere. We will talk more on this I am sure.

As far as all that hell to pay Red50Go, no way. I look at the long history from the very first game up til now, and Massillon still leads the series by a long shot! It is my opinion but the break between the teams does not count. Since the two teams resumed play we are still behind Massillon by a long count. I am coming down to Massillon to get your drinking water. I think that is the key to your success!

The last time Warren visited Massillon, Massillon has that larger than life Inflatable Tiger. It reminded me of Godzilla! Now, is that anyway to treat a visitor to your house?! The only thing I can counter with is loud fireworks, brought to you buy your local Army Reserve Unit or Ravenna Arsenal! Anyway, I enjoy the high school scene very much, and look forward to playing Massillon as it is the highlight game of the season for us every year. Iggy is on our schedule too, but it is different though. Massillon is old-tradition, whereas, Iggy is a powerhouse from the 80's. It is nice to see public schools remain competitive and do well against the Catholic Schools.

Hi Slider, I enjoy the games more than ever now, and seeing the evolution of High School Football. I find it very hard to go to smaller division games after experiencing Massillon, Harding, McKinley and others. To compare the two divisions is not right, but for me Harding is the only game in town, no disrespect to Warren JFK, Warren Howland.

If I could make out Massillon's season schedule it would be:

Steubenville Big Red
Cardinal Mooney
Warren Harding
Canton McKinley
Mentor
Cincinnati Moeller or Cincinnati Elder
and throw in anyone else you'd like and not in the above order.

Thanks CarlE!,

I need someone in Massillon to get me to a restaurant down there where you guys eat! I love great food--steak, burgers, pizza etc. before the game. Don't hate me for wearing gold and white and having a spear! Right before the game we must separate to sit on our respective sidelines and hollar at the refs for being paid off by the other team. I try to pay the refs using my American Express Card!

I think Massillon is turning PBTS into a "Baby Horseshoe"? Correct? We will have to see what kind of revenue that turns up, I am sure the fans will love it. It must really hurt deep down to not get tickets to the Massillon/McKinley game because seating is taken. Even with the enlargement, someone will miss out--but that is why you have to get your tickets way early! Fans should know this. Last minute anything and you are chancing it!

I used to play baseball against Tony Waite and Clayton downtown Warren in the summer leagues. I bashed Clayton for going to South Carolina, and told him do not run up against the Noles!!!!!!!! Anyway, Clayton could throw that football and march up and down the field at will. We should have cloned him for Reserve!!!!!!! Of course secretly!!!

You three sound like you have too much fun! That's good this is what it is all about! Critiquing the coach, play calling, hollaring at someone for missing a block, dropping a pass, fumbling, or not tackling!

I am bringing down my new son. Zachary who is 5 years old. He is adopted, but you would never know it! He flirts with waitresses so that should help with any discounts too Warren1ST!!!!! Maybe if he charms the Massillon Cheerleaders and Majorettes, it would distract the Massillon football team to see what all the commotion is about, instead of concentrating on the game.

CarlE and Smitty, I am well aware of the Massillon tradition on putting footballs in baby's crib. Zachary was given a bow and arrow, so just watch it!!!!

How is he at throwing a baseball? Florida is BEAUTIFUL this time of year!!

He better play football and baseball! We are training in the basement for tee-ball now, have been for last 4 months. He is either gonna be at 2nd base or short stop. We leave mom upstairs to cook, while I toughen him up a bit downstairs, so he knows what to expect from bouncing balls that can go any direction. Once we get outside (IF THE SNOW WILL QUIT COMING IT IS SPRING ALREADY!!!!!), I will have to re-teach everything once he is on the field. That's Okay, because at least he has heard the languange and knows where to position himself. I do not want to be one of those yuppie parents that goes after coaches for not playing my son. I want to step back, let the coaches do their job, and at home in private help him reach his potential, and go down to some empty ball field and practice, practice, practice. As far as football goes, I want him to play organized football with kids his age and a little older to again, toughen him up some. I am big on education, and polite manners. No one wants to be around a kid that is spoiled, rude, soft, and or a nuisance. He is progressing well, and yes, I let him be a kid and make his own mistakes and learn from them. He has a new bike, falls, but he gets up on his own, and gets back on. I do not run and pick him up and nor kiss any boo-boos. I admire the older generation for their toughness, I desperately wish I lived in that era; I may be 38 years old, but I like shows such as:
"Our Gang/ The Little Rascals", "Laurel and Hardy", "Ba-Ba- Blacksheep" and I love my WWII anything shows. My son will love them too. What is old is new again!!!! I see too manyboys that are babied, I do not want my son like that. Love the girls, chase after them, have great manners, hit the books and be smart, be a good football player, hold intelligent conversations with everyone, and respect the older generations because they did something for you, you can never really repay back--freedom. I want him to be strong-willed, but for the right purposes, go to church and worship God, and do guy stuff, play in the dirt and mud, don't sit at home in front of the TV all day with some sorry video game and get fat! Get some fresh air, it did me good, and my friends too!

As for Florida, don't hate me guys! I know everyone is a Buckeye. I was a Buckeye, felt betrayed when Earl Bruce was let go. I have followed Florida State Seminoles since the mid-70's when they were a no-body. I am excited about the new coaching hires now! F.S.U. is installing the same trick offense L.S.U. possesses, because we have their old offensive coordinator. Mickey Andrews still owns the defense. I talk or email Bobby Bowden every so often he is a stand up guy in my opinion. It is cool that he takes the time out to respond back. He gave me a picture of himself autographed to give to the Harding Raiders before the Mooney game when Gary Barber was our head coach. It was cool for the kids, it said something like "Tomahawk Chop'em/hit 'em with all Reckless Abadone". This kids got fired up about that. I hope Zachary can go there for football and baseball. I would love to go down one day, see a college football game, then head down to Miami and go on a Royal Caribbean Cruise for the rest of the week.... There is the reason my madness......... Talk with you guys very soon!!!!
