Have any of you caught the TSB in action during their many hot summer practices? How about the ones on the football field the past several nights?

Everyone in Massillon is in for a wonderful surprise for pregame, halftime and postgame this year! Check out the drum major's struts and the majorettes' special featured twirler. Way to go "Swing" band!

Great job, Mr. Neel!!

We sure are proud of all the hard work of our band students. And to the freshman-congratulations-you made it through summer band!!

The band sound good last night at the rally. I am really excited to hear them play at Friday's game. My niece is section leader and the band going to be great. I also heard that the volume is much louder than in past years.

Good job Mr. Neel and welcome to Tiger Land:rockin:

Mr. Neel has done an AWESOME job for being hired so late. They sounded great tonight and the halftime show was amazing for a new director. They looked like they were haveing fun again, like when Mr. Smith was there.
Kudos to Mr. Neel and all the band members who have worked so hard this summer. It is certainly an improvement over the past two years.

Those kids are going to be in great shape by the end of the season. Man, were they moving. Loved the drum major too. Lot of awesome high-stepping.

The "Swing" is back in the Tiger Swing Band...old school!

I didn't get to hear them at the game tonight, but they sure sounded great at the HOF parade a few weeks back.

I really like the way they are playing Tiger Rag now. It was way too fast before and didn't sound near as good as it does now.

The new band director seems like he's doing a super job already!

You need to read the link provided above for an explanation...

They are reviving age old traditions...

One other thing I can say... I had no idea where to stand while I was filming...

OMG!!!!!

What did I tell you when I started this thread?!

This band has done a complete turn around (no pun intended!)-louder, drills that make sense, shows with actual themes!!

LOVED the train drill, that back and forth one, the drum train, the featured twirler, the drum major, the straight lines, the sound!

All that hard work this summer sure has paid huge dividends!!

Awesome, just awesome!

Now we need a t-shirt that says on the back "The Tradition continues:
and on the front "The Massillon Tiger Swing Band!"

I think they did ok. I was disappointed in the way they took the field. When they said they were going to be entering from the visitors locker room area I was really looking forward to seeing them blasting onto the field high stepping, doing turns, and having much more energy. It wasnt what I was expecting but it was much improved.

Good Job, looking forward to seeing and hearing more!

Some of you people will never be happy. If the football team wins a state championship, the football fans would all be happy. It seems like the swing band will never be good enough since there is no title to be won. They were high stepping, they did do turns, and it did have high energy. It was the first game of the season from an extremely young band with a director that's only been here a month. I thought they did excellent!!!! Way to go swingsters!!

Easy! I think everyone is happy with the band and the director! Anybody who participates in anything knows that they always have room to improve. They are competitors like anybody else and telling people they are perfect all the time does them no good. I think they are improved and did a great job. I just thought the entrance was weak......I liked double time, instuments above the head ect.........

I'll tell you what, if you have an overweight son or daughter and want them to lose some weight, send them to TSB band camp 101. Watching them last night got me tired. My daughter was in the band in '93' and she said that's how it was back then. I don't remember, I'm getting that sometimers disease. TSB even looked bigger than last year. Next year our youngest girl will be in the Swing Band. Hey Swingsters you're looking good. It's a new beginning, you're on your way to greatness once again. :tig: :ers:

If I have learned one thing in the last few years it is that there are parents and kids that keep the wheel turning in this town. All these traditions, events and shows take people.

If you have a kid in anything would you say Geez Jenny your first show was a little weak but it's an improvement from last year? :wtf:

Friggin get a life!

It's time in this town for all the Monday morning QB's to take a friggen vacation so this new generation can get things going.

I caught the halftime show on replay this morning. To this semi trained eye (7 years HS and college marching) it was a vast improvement over last year. Sound quality, volume (ok, maybe tough to tell on tv), balance, high stepping and drill quality are all better after 1 game then they were at the end of last year. I can only imagine that, like the football team, they will progress and get better throughout the year. To all the Swingsters and Boosters out there, nice job! :coolgleam:

The numbers are still low because many kids quit last year before they knew that Mrs. Hire would be gone and they already had their schedules figured out for this year. With Mr. Neel as director, I am sure the numbers will go up.
Did anyone see the Mr. Neel message the band displayed in the fence with their syrofoam cups (another band tradition)? That aslo says that the kids like him. I don't ever remember seeing Mrs. Hire's name in the fence but maybe I was working in the concession stand when that happened.

I for one really appreciate the long hard hours of time and work from those dedicate younsters! We got the swing back. Congrats to Mr. Neel, I like the fact he is researching the old band work. And you know what?

The band actually played during the game and did the infamous "rollercoaster ride" and the majorettes, drum major and Obie were dancing in the stands (along with some flute and clarinet players too!) to the music.

The kids looked like they were having SO much fun! Now when was the last time you saw that?

I just can't get over it!!

And the applause after the drills and the standing ovation!!

THANK YOU Massillon fans for being so kind and appreciative of our Massillon Tiger Swing Band-all kids only 14-18 years old!!!

Congradulations to the band and the new director on a great opening game performance. It has been a number of years sense I have enjoyed a good band show. When I heard them marching down the road toward the stadium,it brought back memories of the way it used to be. Their numbers maybe down because of the past but I think that will soon change and the future looks great. The band has always been part of our tradition and they are on the way back. Also the feature twirler did a great job and I think she is only a freshman. The new director has done a great job in a short time. GO BAND-----GO TIGERS

The TSB did a FABULOUS job!!! They had me jumping up and down out of my seat from the get-go. http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/jumping0046.gif

Tiger Rag was fast....

Loved the "Hi Folks" and the return of Stand Up and Cheer.

Our featured twirler...... out of this world!!! And, the new Drum Major-- what strutting. Very, very good.

How about the drummers on the A-Train? -- (a personal favorite) http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/musical/drums.gif

It was just so great to see the band looking like they were having fun .. Looking forward to each and every week. http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/musical/marchingband.gif

The Cheerleaders pregame doing Tig Ers was a wonderful new addition.

Go Band, Go Team, Go Cheerleaders....... and a really fine performance by the Choir on "Oh Canada" (Northpark really looked like they appreciated it.)

Note: If you didn't hang around for the post game show from the band, you really missed something. It was super!!!

Isn't it great to be a Tiger? Can't beat it.

The featured twirler is a sophomore. Remember the rule about being in Swing Band for a year first before becoming a majorette?

I remember her being on the field two years ago when the middle school students go on the field to play with the band. She would have been an 8th grader then!

Awesome performance-wonderful to watch- and not one drop!!

I am so excited as a former Swing Band Member from 89. I live up in Cleveland. I won't be able to come to a game until the game on Sept. 16th. I figure the band will have whatever bugs worked out by then. My Mom, also a former band member, was at the game. She was so excited after the game. She called me at 11 to tell me how much better the band is and it's just week one! Keep up the great work. I'm happy to hear that the band got a couple standing ovations. Kids, great job. I heard that they (Washingtonians)sang because near the end of the season there is always a game that the Advanced Choir sings the alma mater at. It might be homecoming, can't remember for sure.
One thing though, the Washingtonians are our dance and performing (show)choir, not necessarily the best of the best as far as singing goes. Most kids in Advanced don't even try out for it as it takes up so much of their time and are already to commited to so many other extra activities. They are all equally gifted singers.

i have felt this way forever and i couldn't agree more.

script ohio is one of the greatest football/marching band traditions to be found anywhere.

even most michigan fans will tell you that.

the piss-poor version that the mckinley band does is a disgrace and i often times find myself uncomfortable watching them spew all over it.

How'd you all feel, say as recently as just last year, hearing folks rip our band kids apart? Face it, as unhappy as most MP posters have been with our band in the last few years, McK's band HAD to have been better than ours during that time. No need to bash the kids.

I was in Massillon yesterday (Sunday) and saw the replay on the school channel. I'm glad they showed the halftime show. #1 Tiger Rag is fast!!!! That is awesome! Man, you've got to be in good shape to do it at that tempo!

The One Hit Wonders Show was really good. "Funkytown" and "Mambo #5" are good songs. I'm sure the kids have fun playing them.

To the drum major/majorette line...GREAT JOB! You all look really good!

To you Swingsters who read this, what's the mood in the band? How much do you like Mr. Neel. I hope you all realize how incredibly happy Tiger fans are to see you rockin' PBTS. Well, you won't believe this. How very proud I am! Working at Akron U, we happen to have a Music Ed student as a student asst. He came in to my office just now to tell me that his class was learning what a great marching band director George Red Bird was. And of course, knowing me, he just knew that George Red Bird was from MASSILLON! I had to tell him that Red Bird was the reason why the Massillon people are so very proud of their SWING Band---that other people can claim that they have a Swing Band but it was really born in our wonderful city. He is so excited about all of it and said he can hardly wait to go out and buy some books that Bird had written! I told him that the Massillon people are so very thrilled that we have our Band back again and that we have an absolutely wonderful director and great kids performing this year. Mr. Neel and Tiger Swingsters, you make us so very proud. GO TIGERS!

I liked those announcers on Fox... i forget the play-by-play guts name, but he kept calling Huth Tommy Huth - at least the first series. And their spotter was horrible BUT he and Greg Frey were very fair and even seemed a little pro Tiger - kept saying they'll come back, watch out, etc. They even said that Massillon clearly had a really bad day.

Reghi and Frey did a decent job. I heard the "Tommy Huth" call a couple times and Huth is pronouned like "Who" with a "TH" on the end of it. Reghi kept pronouncing the "H" in Huth heavily and it sounded like the word "youth". And then there was "Skee-gog" at the end.

kudos to the band...first, for wearing those what had to be unbearable hot uniforms, sitting in the hot sun...hope there were no casualties...had a couple of kids pass out on me over the years when i was helping with the findlay band...

and the sound was great...enjoyed those few brief moments...

but, why did they stick you all clear over in BFE all by yourselfs...in that big stadium...surely, they could have moved you over to where you were an integral part of the crowd...

Our almighty Swingsters will be performing for nine minutes this Saturday during halftime!!!

The theme is "Over the Rainbow".

Check out the many Oz songs and the awesome tornado.

I've been told there are other "special effects" to be seen too!

Can't wait guys and gals!!!!:rockin:

Great performance, Band!!

Loved the tornado, the costumed band directors, the dancing Obie/Cowardly Lion and the rainbow balloons. Music was good too-though I'm not too familiar with the "Wicked" song.

Did everyone hear how quiet the stands were when the other band was playing?
That was a different type of performance.

Overheard in the stands: " Is Area 51 in Arizona now?":alien:

Oh well-to each his own......

It was very good. The feature twirler and the drum major are such an upgrade. They do an excellent job. Good music. Well done!:gogogo:

Since you brought it up. It was an "interesting" performance by the Hamilton band. Excellent musicianship by a corps style band. Just don't make me over think your performance. About a third of the way through their program, longtime turned to me and said "Butler, what the heck is that?" After a full day of football, don't make me analyze your interpretation of the "Big Bang Theory" with music that I'm totally unfamiliar with.

Nice job by the MTSB. Familiar songs done in a well played and playful manner. I'm sorry, but the opening of Carry On and Tiger Rag lends itself better to pregame. After seeing it in person and on tape a couple times, it doesn't fit every halftime. Sorry if this runs counter to tradition, just my opinion.

It just was not a typical performance we see in Northeast Ohio. Maybe I'm too "low brow" to get it. I don't want to criticize because they, like the Tiger Swing Band, put a lot of effort in their performances. I applauded respectfully when they were done.
