Vikings clawed by Tigers
All good things must come to and end sometime and the same could be said for the Vikings modest two game winning streak as the host Vikings lost their first game of the season 8-4 in a lackluster performance against the visiting Massillon Tigers. The Vikings were never really in the game as they fell behind 7-0 after two innings. In the bottom of the third the Vikings scored three runs on only one hit and with the help of four walks. With one out, Jeff Meek started the rally with a double to left and after the next batter popped up to the catcher the Vikings received five consecutive walks to score three runs. Tyler Nicholson, Blaine Maze, Shane Facenbaker, Alex Marinelli, and Andrew Spehar all drew the free passes with Shane, Alex and Andrew each earning an RBI. With the bases still loaded the Vikings had a chance to pull even closer but could not manage to get the much needed timely hit.
After the first two shaky innings Rocco Palomba settled in on the mound and kept the Tigers off balance and off the bases over the next four innings as he surrendered just two hits and only one baserunner who was erased on a double play ball while the second baserunner was thrown out trying to stretch a single to left into a double and was gunned down by a strong throw from leftfielder Alex Martinelli. Whatever chance the Vikings had to close the gap seemed to disappear as the hosts themselves only managed one base runner over the next two innings. In the the bottom of the sixth the Vikings managed to cut the lead to 7-4 as Tim Groves singled with one out and was followed by Jeff Meek's second hit of the game. With two outs Rocco Palomba doublied down the left field line to score Groves but with two on the inning ended with a groundout.
In the seventh inning the Tigers scored an insurance run with the help of the first two errors of the year for the Vikings. While in the bottom of the seventh the Vikings tried to make things interesting as Blaine Maze and Shane Facenbaker opened the inning with singles but the rally would be short lived as the next three Viking hitters failed to keep the rally alive.
The Vikings did manage to record six hits on the day with five of those hits coming in the sixth and seventh innings. Leading the way was Jeff Meek with a double and a single.
The Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday as the always tough Federal League action begins with the Vikings playing host to the McKinley Bulldogs. Game time is 5PM.
