This is from John Gorman, former Program Director of WMMS.
"Jeff Kinzbach is in the construction business - and quite successful - and living in Dallas. Ed “Flash” Ferenc works with the Cleveland Municipal Court. Matt the Cat works for Progressive Insurance. Kid Leo does a show on Sirius’ Underground Garage channel. Prior to that he held various positions at Sony Music. Denny Sanders is the VP/GM of Telos Systems, the leading manufacturer of professional audio equipment, which is based in Cleveland. Before joining Telos, Denny succeeded me as PD of WMJI, which became the number one station in Cleveland and a highly respected oldies station nationally. Billy Bass lives in Cleveland and owns Billy Bass Photography.
Betty Korvan is retired and living in Deadwood, SD. BLF Bash works with Giant Eagle. Ruby Cheeks is doing radio in Phoenix. Dia Stein worked in radio syndication and still does radio in New York City. The "Get Down Guy" Murray Saul writes for the Free Times and sells real estate. The whereabouts of Mr. Leonard and Kenny Clean are unknown."

Gorman is writing a book about his time at WMMS. It's scheduled to be released this fall. I have a feeling, like the book "Radio Daze", it will be a must have in my collection.

WHBC-AM is starting a new, weekend sports show. Dave Sheetz (sp?) will be hosting "Stark Sports Live" on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until noon. It seems to me to be an odd time of the year to start this show, but I can see the potential of it during Saturdays in the fall.

They took some calls and also had some scheduled guests. All four guys from the sports department were there. I don't know if that will happen every week. I doubt Sammy Bourquin wants to work 6 days a week.

I'm sure the parent company realizes that local sports talk, especially football, is an opportunity to make more $$$. I'm sure Sammy will work OT through football season, and then let some of the other hosts shoulder the weekend work during the off-season.

An Ohio media note:

"Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., which is making a $5 billion bid for Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones & Co., on Wednesday said it planned to sell nine of its Fox-affiliated TV stations, including one in Cleveland."

I read a newspaper article where WHBC has discontinued being the primary sponsor for the finale of the Downtown Summer Concert Series. That is odd,
considering there were always nice crowds for the concerts. But I don't want to read too much into it. Perhaps their prime competitor in the format, "My 101.7" would be interested in the future.

It looks like the changes at WHBC-AM haven't been a hit with the listeners. The ratings on the AM side have dropped nearly 2.5 points. And, for the second time in the last three ratings releases, WTIG is not listed.

Yes people have not been happy that tried to fix something that "wasn't broken." Just another example of large companies not knowing their local markets.
As far as WTIG, I only can remember seeing them showing in a handful of releases in the past 15 years, and always at the bottom. Other than Tiger sports they have little of local interest. If you want to listen to national sports talk, you can do so on the internet, satelllite radio or about a dozen other radio stations with a better signal than WTIG.

I still say we should form a group of community driven business people and buy WTIG and bring it back home (Hometown news and talk, classic oldies, and SPORTS.. Problem is RJ won't sell the damn thing.

Wow…that would be great. I would listen for sure with that mixture. And, then if they could get Coach’s Hot Seat back….even better.
A long time ago they had a program called “Trading Post”. It was really good. Sort of like a pre-E-Bay. It was really a great local tool for buying/selling…but I know there are a lot more options out there now.

WHBC does that on Sunday mornings from 10-12. They call their version "Tradio".

LOL, I listened to that program a couple of weeks ago. It was some type of extra long program that particular day. They were calling in selling everything from roof shingles to a home! It did bring back memories of the old Trading Post. Thanks for bringing that up, I couldn't remember the name at the time me and the kids were listening in the car.

Sure is. I listen to the radio in the afternoon to hear my buddy The Big Dog, Steve Duemig on Sports Radio. Other than that, Sirius rules. Howard in the mornings and then E. Street Radio on Channel 10 featuring The Boss, Bruce Springsteen.

Local radio in this area is really poor (with a few exceptions) and has been for years. NEO used to be the home of some of the best radio in the country in the 70s. Today its lousy, but radio is a shrinking medium. Anyone with any talent is doing something other than standard terrestial radio.
WTIG reminds me of a pirate staion or one somebody hooked up in their basement.

Regular radio is dying, won't be too long before no major names will sign regular radio deals and all will go to Satellite radio.
Those that stay local may survive believe it or not. Because once most of the national hosts got to Satellite the only reason for local radio will be local news/weather talk. That is the only reason I ever turn off the Sirius unit in my truck. Everyday regular radio loses 10,000 listeners in the U.S.A. to satellite radio, that is a fact (6,000 to sirius and 4,000 to XM). Nobody is buying the HD radio, that will go the way of AM sterio me thinks.
The one major radio personallity that is NOT in this area anymore that could draw ratings to a station is Tom Leykis, and who knows what is going to happen when his contract is up in March 2007... He could just join Howard in Satellite Radio land.
(BTW I bring up Tom Leykis because he DID bring up the ratings and made 100.1 FM #1 in less than a year, they dropped him once the rating went up for local talk... which was the plan from the beginning)
I haven't listened to regular radio for over 2 years. I have Sirius in the SUV & house.

mp.com's very own, The Voice has been filling in for Brady Russell this week doing his afternoon shift on WHBC. Brady Russell was given the boot while he was on vacation. Jim Albright will be replacing him. Looks like The Voice might have more opportunities for fill in work.
