...Coblentz averaged 24 points a game this season, becoming Lake’s career scoring leader. With unlimited range, an ability to finish drives and good vision as a passer, the only thing missing for the 6-foot-3 Coblentz is a college scholarship.

Massillon’s Michael Porrini is trying to fix that.

“I know Eric can play Division I basketball,” said Porrini, a Division I player himself, headed to Western Carolina. “I’ve seen him play enough and played against him enough.”

When Porrini found out at photo day last week that Coblentz did not have a college lined up, Porrini made a quick phone call.

“I talked to my college coach about Eric, and he said they’d check him out,” Porrini said. “He’s one of the best shooters I’ve guarded...”

Michael Porrini is a true class act. He epitomizes what true sportsmanship is all about.

We need more Porrinis in this day and age.

Dear Michael,

Just a note to tell you that the article in today's Rep. gave me "goosebumps" when I read that you are working on getting Coblentz into a Division 1 school. You truly exemplify your great grandfather (who I have always called "St. G.") when it comes to caring, compassion and concern.

You are much more mature than most people your age and I am very fortunate that I have had the opportunity to know you and watch your basketball career progress. Thank you so much for being a "role model" for many young people and all of us who are not so young. You will be successful in anything you pursue, and I want to express my gratitude to you (and Kosta) for making me truly love this sport.

It seems like yesterday when Mike Porrini came in the BB game as a Freshman to Beat Hudson. How time flies.

Tiger Don's Article:

The Tigers had a chance to win at the end of regulation and again at the end of the first two extra periods, but just couldn’t knock down the deciding shot. But in the third one, trailing 73-71, freshman Mike Porrini nailed a 12-footer from the left wing to tie the game with 1.6 seconds left. Porrini was on the floor in place of Billy Relford, who had fouled out in the second overtime.
