I'm shocked there hasn't been any threads on this. We have pulled out of the Herbie and are playing Solon week 2 at home. What a great game---they're loaded and win 7-8 games every year. It's a home game that will draw some fans....open with Middletown and Solon first two weeks at home......is it football season yet----I'm ready.
Schedule is loaded!

I read this early this AM, and have already updated the schedule.
I'm excited for this game too!

Awesome. It's good that we were proactive with the Herbie and didn't go down with the ship. Solon is a decent program and it's good to be playing another public school.

Anyone know anything about Solon? What kind of offense do they run? What is their defense like? Do they have any big time players that can make it in the college level? What weapons do they have?
Have we ever played them in the past? Or will this be the first meeting between us?
I have only seen Solon play once. It was a few years back when they lost the championship game against Upper Arrlington.
U.A. had this awesome running back, cant remember his name. I think it was something like Jeff Backus who was all ohio and went to play ball for Ohio State, but ended up leaving the team, which opened up a spot for some running back out of Warren. Wont say his name, but he ended up starting as a true freshman and got into a lot of trouble.

Raptor, according the article they were young last year but have alot of starters returning. I am sure they dont come into Massillon w/out thinking they will be VERY good this year. And when Solon is good, they are REAL good. As legit a contender as most any public school in ne oh, ala Mentor last year.
I was also at the Solon-UA title game. Jeff Backus was the tb. I think he had like 3000 yards that year. He went Big Ten but it was not OSU. Simon Fraser and Tim Shaffer? were the 6'6" bookend DE's on that team, both to OSU. But Solon more than held their own as the game went down to the last play. I believe a Backus int in the endzone.

Can't wait for this one!
The last time Solon played a Stark County team, they defeated a tough Perry Panthers team 28-7 in a Division I state semifinal.

Obiefan....just to give you a heads up, change the Solon game from away to home on the schedule.

Just the type of game I was looking for to replace the Herbie. No cupcake and Solon has a very tough team so we will have to bring our "A" Game. The schedule is loaded while still keeping one or tune ups along the way!

Agreed.
Our schedule is yet again another meat-grinder. It really is tough not playing in a league.

This is a great move. Dump the Herbie, and get a good local program. Solon should bring some fans, too. Solon doesn't look to be too loaded next year, either, but they should be a solid team that will make us work for what we get. A good early season game.
Who signed this game, anyway? Who's the AD of record these days?

This is a great team for the Tigers to get on their schedule as they are good and they are a good computer team. We now have an excellent computer schedule along with playing some great teams. Now the Tigers have to work hard as to become a great team and this season could really be outstanding ! GO TIGERS

Great pickup. A very good team & a harbin cow. Cant think of them EVER winning less than 7 games. Not trying to jinx us. Lol.

I wouldn't necessarily call Solon a "Harbin cow". There have been a few years lately in which they may have taken us behind the woodshed.

Praise God above they have FINALLLY made you happy with a game they've scheduled!!! LOL. Teasing, bro. I know where you've wanted our schedule headed and it looks like you are finally getting your wish. Now I'll expect to see you there with Coronas in hand celebrating the schedule.
By the way, Wan brings up a good point. Who DID schedule and sign this game anyway?

No doubt. I only meant they win 7 games no matter what, because of their schedule, and 9 win seasons are pretty regular. But they do play tough hardnosed football and can beat us in a given year. Program wise, they are right on par w/ a Mentor, or slightly better.

This is a very solid and aggressive football team. They will come after you for four quarters at 110% every play and will get you a lot of computer points.
Here is a link everyone might be interested in. Take a look at their history.

I like the addition of Solon. They will come to PBTS prepared, and ready!
I really like this years schedule. It provides plenty of challenges to get us ready for week 15, without breaking our backs every single week.
Can't wait for the first game.....

Solon is up here in my neck of the woods. I can tell you they are good every year, some years they're really good. Mentor and Solon have had some really good battles in the past with each of them taking turns beating each other. This will be a HUGE game for them and they'll battle the Tigers for sure. Nice town, great school district and a beautiful football field too. This is really a good pick up for the Tigers even if we weren't under the gun to fill the schedule, like to see us keep them in the future. Can't remember number of boys, but their not huge like Mentor. They play a good schedule to get lots of points even when they aren't on top....Really not a bad drive coming from Massillon either if we keep them for any length of time..

MTown,
It's games and large crowds like this that make it worth being on the BOMS (Beast Of Massillon Streets), LWE (you know what that means).

Are you 100% sure that he wasnt a Buckeye? What school did he go to? I could have sworn that he went there and had some kind of injury that made him leave football.
I was at that game with my friend who works for channel 10 out of Columbus (wbns) And i can remember him going on and on about how Jeff was heading to OSU next fall. Then the next season i could have sworn I read in the paper that he was leaving the football team, that was how Clarrett got his chance to start as a true freshman. I might be wrong, but i could have sworn that was how his college football career started.

I guess I'd rather be at PBTS during the game(s) rather than on the BOMS (aka LWE).

Jeff Backes played at Northwestern U, and had a nice career there. He played RB, WR, CB returned punts and kicks as well, he led the Big 10/11 in kick returns I think in his junior year, really one of those guys that would play anywhere and do OK. He was also an academic all-big 10/11 selection...

I believe Backes had to leave the Northwestern team his senior year or so because of injury.
I think the Solon game should be a good one- they certainly will be ready and we should take it as seriously as an Ignatius game. Look at our common opponents in '05 listed above- not too much difference between them and us.
It does look like they took a nosedive in the last few games of '06. Anyone know what happened? What do they have coming back?

Yes, they had some kids that were suspended The coach and school run a real tight ship as far as team rules. I don't think it was grades related, at least not all of them, it was something else. Plus I think they were a little younger in experience that the prior couple years.
