Matta has a "dream class" next season. He's built a recruiting machine. He has full support of the administration and fans. His family loves it there. He's one of the better paid coaches. Why would he want to leave?

...because winning a title at Kentucky puts you at the top of your profession. There is still a lot of prestige at that place.

He's got a great thing working at Ohio State...but UK is still UK.

It worked out great for Tubby.

Ask Tubby. He'll tell you it worked out GREAT for him for his career. Yes, UK is the epitome of college basketball folks.

It's a top flight program, no doubt. But would you take Kentucky's lineup this season (for example) or Ohio State's lineup (either this season or next season)?

CarlE,

Smith peaked in his first season at Kentucky. He hasn't been back since that 1998 season.

Since then, the Wildcats suffered three regional final losses, one to Dwyane Tyrone Wade's Marquette Golden Eagles and two devastating losses to Michigan State.

If I was OSU I probably would tell them he is under contract with an extension but every coach may want the UK job but all will be under severe pressure to win--NOW! Better circumstances at OSU right now and he is loaded for a 3/4 year domination of the Big Ten and possibly the nation with the incoming class especially if Odem and Conley stay at least 1 more season--- Odem performed like a kid who needs some footwork and would be advised to play college ball next year--IMO but still would be #2 pick behind Durant of Texas.

matta is an excellant recruiter and wherever he coaches he will bring in top flight talent!

Yes that was my point. I wasn't denying Kentucky is a top program. I believe Matta is in a better situation at Ohio State right now (and I'm sure he realizes that too). And he's under contract.

longtimefirsttime,

Matta is one win from hitting his peak at OSU. One more win and Columbus will be dancing all the way to Georgia.

This just hasn't been the best of times for me...and Ohio State has played a large part in that.

That's because you root for a bunch of losers.

I don't get this. How can making the Final Four be "the peak?" Wouldn't winning it all be the peak? What about winning multiple championships? Maybe you mean it will be the highlight of his career at Ohio State to this point. There's a difference.

I think Keno's use of the word peak has reached its peak.

Speaking of peaks, how about twin peaks ???

Seriously though, I think that Matta will at least "ride out" this current wave of talent, before taking ANY job.

longtimefirsttime,

You didn't say that when Massillon head coach Tom Stacy led Massillon to their peak in reaching the 2005 Division I state championship game!

You better come up with something better than that because I just took your best shot  .

What? Since you mentioned him, would Tom say that reaching the finals is the peak of his career? Absolutely not. WINNING a state title would be the highlight of his high school coaching career (if not multiple championships). Once again there's a difference. He may laugh though if someone tells him Keno said he peaked in December, 2005.

longtimefirsttime,

You probably won't get an argument from me here. Good luck to OSU tonight against Memphis (just for you).

Guys, don't get all full of yourselves up there in Ohio. Word all over the place is that right now Kentucky is only interested in ONE coach and that is Billy Donovan of Florida. And why not? Defending national champs and he has them back in the Final Four trying to repeat.

longtimefirsttime

Fine with me.

Despite losing most of his starters, Donovan is staying put at Florida. Now the reported frontrunners for the Kentucky job are Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie, Texas coach Rick Barnes, Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Memphis coach John Calipari.

Rick Barnes withdrew his name and I believe that Gillispie has been hired.

longtimefirsttime,

Fans always have something to say. It's not his fault as that was his decision to depart after one year. Most of those fans who are angry are a bunch of unknowledgeable bold, appalling, silly, thoughtless, arrogant, rash, demeaning, snobs!

I mean...what do they know? They're not coaching the game or playing the game! What a bunch of sorry awful, sardonic, simple radicals!!
