Just wondering if anyone here belongs to MySpace? I joined a while back so I could check out what my kids were doing on there, and actually found it to be pretty interesting...after you get past all the half naked pictures that people post of themselves, that is.

Here's my profile:

[QUOTE=PurpleArmy;42622]Just wondering if anyone here belongs to MySpace? I joined a while back so I could check out what my kids were doing on there............

This kind of thinking by parents never ceases to amaze me! How about trying this next time you want to check out your kid's myspace, aim, or anything else that they are signed up to on the internet... "hey son/daughter log onto your account so I can see what's going on"......You are the adult they are the child, you are the boss and their job is to obey. Parents have every frigging right to look into what their kids are doing. Maybe if more of them would do so we wouldn't have so many kids meeting up with perverts. And maybe parents would have a lot better of an idea of what kind of kids their kid is hanging out with if they took some initiative and stop worrying about invading little jimmy's or mary's space. Or even stupider, worrying about their kids getting mad at them or not liking them anymore:doh2: They get over it.
I would much rather be straight forward and honest with my kids than have to go behind their backs to find something out when I can do it right in front of their faces. You'd be surprised how much they will learn to respect you and even trust you, even if they don't like it.

.It is really a simple and effective approach. If they don't like it or refuse to do what you request of them, then guess what?, they lose access to that website or w/e. Works real well for me. You know why? Because my kids know that I actually MEAN it and am not just blowing smoke. Don't be afraid to let your kids know who is running the show or feel guilty for doing so. I don't think that you should have to get your own myspace or facebook or w/e and become one of them in order to keep up with them.

I think employers should require access to current and past "myspace" information on every application. That should whittle down the candidate list pretty quick!

Some good points, but I don't think kids will ever be 100% honest with their parents. Many kids have multiple screen names or pages and could easily show the "G-rated" version to the parent.

This doesn't just apply to the internet either. Just think back to when you were a teen. My family and I were pretty upfront and honest with each other. Having said that, there are so many things that I did as a stupid teen that I would have NEVER told my parents or wanted them to find out.

Buts since I am not a parent yet, I haven't been in any of these situations yet so who am I to say.

As far as have a myspace account for myself, Carle is right on the money on this one.

I agree that the "stealth attack" is best when dealing with your kids on the net. They are WAY smarter, and sneakier than you think.

My daughter (15 years old) kept getting cell phone calls from a boy in Canton South. Then she wanted to know if he could come over. While she was in the shower, she left her myspace open on her 'puter, and I found him under her "friends". I clicked onto his myspace, and found that his top 3 things he likes are drinking , sex, and .................

So, guess what ?? He is no longer welcome to call our home.

Had I not seen this, who knows what troubles I could have had.

These myspace account are pretty much "in your face", this is my life , this is what I do accounts of their daily lives.

Some of them are quite shocking.:stars:

That is my point. I don't wait until my kids walk away or forget to signout. Our computer is in plain sight of the whole family. So if I or my husband feels like standing there watching them while they are logged onto something, we do. If we want to check out their friends pages, we do. If they don't like it, it usually means there is something they don't want us to see. There have been many times we have made them delete and block friends, songs, etc. because of inappropiatness. And it is VERY important that you insist that your child has their account set to "private/friends only" instead of the "public" setting. That way every yahoo on the planet can't see their site.
There are ways to find out if they have other names and other accounts. You can find that out just by the files on your computer. It just takes a little effort and probing. Just like anything else, you can usually find out what you want to know if you put the effort into it.

It's kind of funny because we talk about how sneaky and smart they are, but then again take a look at what a lot of them post on there, lol ! Not too bright when you think about it:doh: I find it kind of frightening how incredibly stupid a lot of them are, but at least they are making part of my parenting job a little easier:cool2:

Having one computer would be easier. My daughter is on the lower level with her computer, I have 2 computers on the main level, a laptop for the 2nd level, and my son has two 'puters on the net , on the upper level.

I would need the National Guard or the Internet Police to track all of these !!

I, too, have to agree that the stealth attack is best tactic for me too. My oldest was out on her own before she got on myspace, but well before drinking age. I found out all about it from myspace. It's amazing how many girls (and guys) will put out personal info out there. like real names and phone numbers. Geez, what the hell do they think could happen?

It's just amazing...

But, no myspace account for me either. We use our son's myspace to see our daughter's. :)

I have a myspace acct too. Started from just checking up on the neice and nephews. They know I lurk and occasionally give them an earful about things I have read. When my kids are old enough, I better be #1 on their friends list or no myspace for them, lol!

I think that only one computor in a home, that is in plain site of anyone who walks by is the answer!
I didn't have the computor problem when we were raising our sons. What I had to do with our youngest son was get in my vehicle and sit down the street from where he told me he was going, to be sure he was or wasn't there. Many, many times he was somewhere else that he wasn't supposed to be! He used to call me Spy Tech! I would just laugh and tell him that if I didn't love him, I wouldn't care what he does! After he got older, he actually wrote letters to my Wife and I thanking us for not giving up on him!

I AM straight forward with my kids. I don't believe in sneaking behind their backs to find out what they're up to. I usually just ask them. All my kids are also on my friends' list on there, and I have their account info (log in names, passwords, etc.) And since I have an account of my own, I can also browse their friends' profiles and read their messages, comments, etc.

Also, the only computer they can log into MySpace on is in plain view of everyone in the living room of our house. They all have computers in their bedrooms, but there's a parental filter on it that blocks out certain sites.

I was wondering that as well. I noticed that obiefan has posted some Massillon stuff on YouTube, so he's probably creative enough and computer savvy enough to design one. So how about it, obiefan? There's a lot of Massillon football players on MySpace, and I'm sure they would probably LOVE a Tigers layout.

My brother has a my space acct for music purposes and has some cool Massillon tiger pictures on in it and some of his music. The site can get kind of crazy so adults please monitor your kids and know their friends list---you never know who's lurking!!

A layout is just the background stuff on a profile page. It also can have make the contact table look a certain way. I don't see how that would take away from MP, as there's nothing to comment on with a layout.

I fixed it with the correct link.

At least, I think he meant to provide this link instead of the porn link.

(Got to watch that "cut and paste" stuff.)

Myspace (and facebook) are great tools for communication. Of course they can be used for the wrong reasons, the same was true of the internet itself, TV and radio.

Yes, i used to use Myspace to hunt down double agent Soviet Spies in Massillon and Canton!:blues:, now, its my mail box (and propaganda center):vbiker:

now u agree that the girls, well mostly all the girls lie bout their ages on my space....11 or 12, saying she is 16....

most kids lie about their age because the minimum myspace age is 14 [Used to be 16 a few years back] and they want to be able to join.

Typically they'll also lie if they're 14-15 and want a non-private page, because Myspace doesn't allow you to have one if you're that young.

And sometimes kids don't like to say their real age so they'll say something silly like 99. xP

Just speaking from what I know.
