If that is the case, who does Massillon play in week 2 and it would in all fairness have to be a home game, knowing the Tigers play Parma Normandy in week 3.

Mass6,
It was phenomenal last year in Massillon! I wouldn't want it at no other place but Massillon and the big reason behind that is the generosity of the people in the press box!
Also...I have NEVER seen press row filled up as it is! Writers from all parts of Ohio filling up press row...it is never empty at that row. And the fact I get to talk to guys like Mr. Easterling, Mr. Shaheen, and a few others validates this!

Guys....
All the way from Cali again...thanks for letting me chime in. I'm glad this thread is up and going...because it confirms the concerns we have had at MVHS. I heard directly from our headcoach today that he can't get anyone from the Herbie Classic to return his phone calls again to answer questions. Two weeks of daily calls from MVHS to the organizers, and NOTHING in return. The thread is confirming fears that we have had for weeks.
Don't be suprised if we jump ship.

Jump away. None of this is surprising, as you can tell by the cynicism and lack of enthusiasm by several local posters.
Teams may well get left in the lurch if the event folds. It's prudent to make sure that it doesn't happen to you.

I'd rather not play either of them. In any event, the only way Colerain will play us is if we go there. They will not travel, period.
According to the OHSAA site, both Niles McKinley and Solon are open in week 2. Either of those would be a good game. I'd even take them as the front end of a home-and-home. It's been a while since I've been to Bo Rein.

how`s this line-up
warren harding vs cleve glenville
mckinley vs youngs mooney
massillon vs steubenville

Glenville---that would be an early test and would welcome a game! Colerain--are our faithful fans scared to travel to cincy? We seldom fair well down there but I would love to see us play them ANYWHERE!!! Any game is good but please no cupcake to lett our team get complacant or over confident. I would rather have a test than a practice game!!!!!! Middletown then a top 10 with the team we have in 2007--- lets see what we have now and prepare for the grind to the trophy or go home!! If we are elite then we can win anyway!!!

If the team gets complacent after two weeks then there are bigger problems than the schedule.
I would rather have a test than a practice game!!!!!!
We've got Mentor, Iggy, Warren, and McKinley to follow. That should be ample testing for a young team during the regular season. I'd rather get the Harbins and look towards the playoffs. Remember them? Those are the games that really count these days. :attention:

There has been talk for several months about teams allegedly not being paid and phone calls going unreturned. I would hope a backup plan is in place, which would soon become the primary plan if the festival falls through.

I'd go further than that. I'd suggest that we become proactive rather than reactive. Specifically, I suggest that we go looking for a game now. If we find one, sign the contract and dump the Herbie before they dump us. It's getting a little late in the year to find good opponents. For example, we just missed out on Solon; they signed a home-and-home with Grove City after both schools were jacked around by the Herbie for the last few months.
A good backup plan might be a contingency contract with Parkersburg. That's a very doable game with or without the Herbie's involvement.

We went to play Elder and Moeller in the Paul Brown Classic which is or"was" held in Cincy every year so no return game or multiple games were scheduled. I wouldn't sign a one year deal with any team--lock them in to a 2 or 4 year contract. The way things look about 10 teams need games for week 2 if the Herbies is a no go so why not match up and play at least we would not in limbo for a week 2 opponent!
IMO-- I like having at least 5 tough games 3 medium games and maybe 2 lower games but we cannot go into the meat of the schedule around week 4 with no challanges or tests without the Herbie. Glenville should be a great test and if we could get a 2 game series with Colerain I would like that as well. When you play 2 or 3 cupcakes in a row to start the season ANY team will be over confident or think we are better than we really are!!! Harbins will come--- the toughest schedules always get rewarded at the end--- Iggy 2002 and Massillon 2006!!!! However we canoot wait on Herbie problems because if it folds--- we will hard pressed to find an opponent in Ohio and open dates are not good!

IMO---- 2003 we were just not that good!!! Lost to A. Butchell for the 1st time in school history!!! Rough schedule but not enough talent!!! The defense was slow and could not stop anybody!!! Tomar Pettis was making 10-15 tackles a game with no help!!!
I want to drop the herbie as well but just hope for a quality opponent! The only teams in Ohio that will be available is the Herbie participants---so we would likely have to schedule one of them! Glenville is closer and will come to PBTS so call them for a back up plan----NOW!

Both seasons we did not have the talent at skill positions on either side of the ball to win against any quality teams consistantly. I was making the point that every 10 years we may have a team or 2 that will not compete but that does not mean we schedule bad teams or trim down the schedule--- we still have to go for it and play the games! We cannot predict the skill set negatives of a team 5 or 6 years out but you can see elite possibilities like in 05 and 06. I will take the 03 and 04 seasons for what we have accomplished this decade with a championship in 2007. We cannot be the big fish every year but you have to keep swimming!
Who else has 3 regional titles this decade?? We keep playing Ohio big dogs and OS powers when given the chance. Challanges , setbacks, and milestones accomplished will make each player a better man in the long run!!
If the herbie dies we should schedule a quality opponent in our state that will give a multiple year contract--- Glenville will be open also without the Herbie!!

I called the Herbie people on the number listed on the website, according to the nice lady I spoke to nothing has been decided on cancelling or continuing the event, the event planning doesn't even begin until next month, and the stuff that has to go on now is going on as planned.
Translation?
As best I can tell from that conversation they don't have any definite plans on cancelling the event and they are moving along as they planned. It leaves open the possibility that it may be cancelled, but it isn't decidedly so. I asked about the rumor being spread that the sponsors pulled out and she basically laughed and said "Ya, we saw that on the internet too"
Take that as you will

I hate to see the Herbie end........If so, so be it.
Since Massillon is "The Capital of High School Football, why not create
our own "Classic"!?
Invite 3 out-of-state teams to take on Massillon and two other in-state
teams. I willing to beat that the attendance would be twice what we had
last year. Not hard to do since Massillon vs Arizona was the only game with significant fans.
Let's do this!!

I've been an advocate of this for years. Couple the football with a multi-day community festival. But keep it reasonably local. If it were financially viable, I think you could get some of the smaller team in the area to give up a home game. Think teams like Mogodore, Dover, and the like. Start with local teams with good community support. If it works well, then think about opening it up to out of state teams.

I would love to see Massillon be in charge of, and host some kind of festivities. I'm sure that we could get 3 quality Ohio teams to play, and then 3 out of state, but not too far out teams. (Within busing distance.)
We could link it to Paul Brown or Chris Spielman, or another household name, to stir interest.
Could possibly made some good $$$$ too !

I'm not sure the numbers would work on that. With 6 teams, you have a lot more expenses than for a single game. However, attendance (read: revenue) is limited by stadium capacity. A sellout at $15/ticket would generate $270,000 to be split 6 ways. 12,000 fans for a single game at $8/ticket would generate $96,000 to be split two ways. There is obviously more revenue from concessions with a larger crowd, and you might even decide to charge for parking, but neither of those revenue streams goes to the athletic department. I suppose you could get sponsers, but the 'McDonalds Tigertown Challenge' isn't an attractive tradeoff.
It boils down to this: Would the extra revenue be sufficient to pay traveling expenses and appearance fees for 4 more teams and leave enough profit to justify the effort?

We could even link up with a national sponsor such as Nike, Reebok, or
Adidas. Heck, ESPN2 has been televising High School games all last year.
Maybe a sponsor would be easy to find.

Now here is something that WOULD work wonders...
Here is what I would add to the suggestion, I would play the 2 games on the Sunday before Labor Day. (The NFL typically starts the following weekend, so no NFL or college games to go up against).
Visiting schools on the Saturday before the game could tour both McKinley and Massillon campuses/facilities, get at light lunch at the non-hosting site after a walk through practice...see the Football Hall Of Fame then some dinner, and has guests, give the visiting players and coaches a few hours at the Stark County Fair for some fun.
On Sunday, throw a big tailgate party at the host stadium site begininng at 11AM, start the first game at 2PM, the nightcap at 6PM with a big fireworks display to end the event.
Come up with a unique name, only need a few sponsors and I bet the event is as near a sell-out each year.
When we work together, we really could show how a HS football event should be carried out, and other schools would be knocking down the door to take part in this event.

Sounds good to me--if the herbie dies 10 Ohio teams and 10 OS teams will be scrambling to fill schedules so some sort of deal would be neccessary to make all the programs happy. We could call it the "Massillon/McKinley High School Classic" or reversed if it suits you better.

We're running a poll now on our forums that I will take to Lynn Wafler the results to as to who McKinley fans want to see the Bulldogs play in week 2. I brought up this suggestion to the site. I think the time to do this could be in the future, Do you? Would you be interested?

An occasional game against an out of state power is fun. But if it's going to happen, I'd rather our AD schedule it. The Herbie seemed unorganized. It's not a good thing going into March not knowing who you're going to play (and people didn't even know at that time if the event was going to survive). And,no offense, but there's little incentive for the Tigers to play an out of state opponent at Fawcett. I wish Ohio well that weekend but I have no problem with the Tigers scheduling Solon in week two.

McKinley needs Massillon to fill up the seats. If you want both teams together, to be a success it would have to be played at PB's Big House.

Interesting idea! Call it the cradle of football classic! How many Stark teams would you want? Four, or just the Tigers and the pups? Personnally, I think making 4 stark teams would be ideal, currently I'd bring in Perry & Northwest against similar size schools. If Central or Hoover had a resurgence in success, maybe they'd be good. I'm sorry the Herbie seems to be at death's door, I enjoyed the games last year, talking to some guys from Hilliard Davidson, watching them go speechless when Obie walked up beside them to shake a little girls hand, and listening to a fan of St. Ed's, still not believing what had occurred the year before in the playoffs! All these fans were excited to be HERE, in the cradle of high school football, they were all planning to leave after their games, but were so caught up in the excitement, they stayed to the end!!!! :gotigers:
