I thought I'd start the thread with the announcement that they have signed their top draft pick Kamerion Wimbley to a six year deal.

Good to see the Browns get a first rounder into camp when it starts. Too many of these young guys think they are bigger than the game.

Looking for steady improvement from the Browns. I would be happy with 8-8, which would be a 2 win improvement over last year. Wimbley looks like a player, but I have already heard good things about D'Qwell Jackson, the 2nd round pick at ILB. Wouldn't be surprised if Jackson makes a bigger impact than Wimbley this year.

It doesn't matter when the Browns signed their #1 pick. They are still going to be lousy in '06.

It's funny about the rookies. Cadillac Williams down here in Tampa continues to tell everyone that one of the main keys to his success this past year was being able to be in camp when it started. Gruden runs a pretty intricate offense at Tampa, and if you get too far behind you will NEVER get caught up.

The experts are predicting around .500 this year for the Browns.

Longtimefirsttime,

The only things Cleveland better be worrying about is getting an offense and is finding a way to defeat the five-time world champion Pittsburgh Steelers!

You know...from what I have been informed, it is my understanding that personnel inside the Browns have talked to players about their future goals and how they will meet those. One of those goals was beating the defending Super Bowl XL champions, who needless to say are 12-3 against the Browns since 1999.

Since a 33-13 win back in 2003, Cleveland has gone 0-4 against the Steelers.

Thump your chests all you want but the Steelers will not be nearly as good this year as last year. Remember, they were not a great team during the regular season, they just got on a roll when it counted. You have major, major losses that you have no answer for.

#1 Bettis....didn't do a lot with the exception of inside the 10's, but his loss of leadership is huge. You saw how much he meant to that team after they won and now his presence in the locker room is gone.

#2 Randel El...I know they got Santonio, but he is a rookie with an already checkered past and I don't believe he is as versatile.

#3 Von Oelhoffen (sp?)...when you pride yourself on stopping the run, and you lose a guy like that it's going to hurt.

#4 Chris Hope....this is the most underrated loss. Polamalu takes a lot of chances and does so because Hope covered for him. Without Hope, you can expect your D to get burnt a lot more if Polamalu doesn't change his style of play.

With a healthy Chris Palmer the Bengals are the best team in the division. The Steelers will find out quickly that they aren't nearly as good as they think they are.

MTown,

I wrote three articles (briefly) for SteelersFever.com (one of several websites affiliated with the Pittsburgh Steelers) and I have a solid feel of what is going on with the black and gold.

Unfortunately, I didn't make the cut largely because I wrote not to antagonize Steelers fans and I blame most of that on myself. I was too nice of a writer and that caught up with me in the end...it was a tough two-week stretch for me because after I found out that I didn't make the cut, my grandfather passed away and it nearly sent me into a deep state of depression.

But getting back to where I am coming from, don't count out the Steelers. They have faced these kinds of losses before yet they have always bounced back like the Steelers I know they are.

Here is what they have accomplished this decade:

31-7 record over the last two seasons
71-33-1 record spanning this decade
7-3 postseason playoff record (3-1 on the road)
first #6 seed to win a conference and Super Bowl title
A franchise record 16-game winning streak, first AFC team to win 15 regular-season games

I see the Browns being much more competitive than last year, which was pathetic at times. I can see an 8-8 or 9-7 season and a split with the Steelers. The defense will be much improved over last year, which will cover up some of the offenses liabilities.

I swear, what will happen next????????????

Bob Hallen, who was supposed to fill in all year for injured Browns center LeCharles Bentley, will announce his retirement on Friday, his agent said.

“He’s got a couple of (damaged) discs and stenosis," agent Cliff Brady said. “Some of these things go back to his days with Atlanta. It’s the type of things that you play with until you can’t play anymore. And that’s where he’s at."

Stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal column. Hallen’s official biography with the Browns includes no mention of back problems.

Hallen complained of back pain after the Browns’ morning practice on Monday. He was examined by a team physician, who, according to a source, saw nothing abnormal.

Hallen then jolted team officials by leaving on his own, presumably to seek the opinion of a specialist he previously saw while with the San Diego Chargers.

“He has seen a couple of doctors," Brady said. “The back specialist is in Los Angeles."

Hallen, of Mentor and Kent State, was signed in free agency by the Browns in March just days after Bentley and receiver Joe Jurevicius were signed. He was to be the line’s veteran sixth man, able to back up center and both guard positions.

Hallen, 31, was thrust into the starting role when Bentley suffered a torn patellar tendon on the first team drill of training camp.

When Hallen walked out on the Browns, coach Romeo Crennel said he had “medical and personal issues." Crennel responded by placing him on the “exempt/left team" list and indicated that Hallen might be fined.

The Browns traded for Ross Tucker of New England on Tuesday. He and Alonzo Ephraim will battle for the starting spot. Another trade for a center is possible.

Doesn't it seem odd that they say there is nothing mentioned about back problems in his bio, yet these problems are from his past playing? How could they not have known about these things? I don't get it.

Sounds to me after all I've heard about this situation, the man wanted to get paid and be a back up back up player. He didn't want on the 1st team. There is no way that all of a sudden Ted Washington breaks his back. There was something fishy before he ever arrived in Cleveland. In the coming weeks, I'm sure we'll find out just what that was.

You might be right. I kinda wondered that myself. If I am going through all the tough training camps, practices, lifting, etc. I would want to play in the game. Why wouldn't you after all the hard work you put in? It sucks doing all that work and not playing in games. I wonder if he was afraid of being criticized since he is not as good as Bentley.

So, any new info on Hallen?

I don't think they were trying to send a message to McCutcheon or Baxter. I think both are going through some injuries and the Browns wanted an insurance corner. I thought I also read where the first choice was to go for a center.

So, any new info on Hallen?

It appears the Browns are "taking the high road" despite Hallen leaving them high and dry. The Browns were reportedly beyond upset at him for doing this so close to the opener. This excerpt from a recent Mary Kay Cabot article in the Plain Dealer sums it up.

"Browns General Manager Phil Savage admitted Friday that he’s upset with center Bob Hallen for leaving the team so abruptly and said Hallen never showed signs of being injured — even on the day he left.
'I have to admit, I’m upset that he walked out on us two days before the first (exhibition) game without any warning, especially in light of us losing LeCharles Bentley,” said Savage. “It was totally unexpected. It really put us in a vise.'
Hallen, a Mentor native and Kent State alum, notified the Browns of his retirement Friday in a letter, citing a medical situation and the best interests of his family. Signed as a free agent in March, he’s agreed to pay back his $200,000 signing bonus.
Savage said Hallen, 31, never underwent a medical exam by the Browns doctors after Monday morning’s practice, as was reported by the team. 'We basically said he’s being looked at [for back spasms], but he left the building and our people never saw him again.'"

I wonder if Hallen had any kind of mental problems in the past or if he had done anything similiar before.

Finally, a preseason win !!! WOOHOO!!

Not sure what the big deal about preseason wins and losses is. Doesn't really matter until the regular season. But if you are going to make fun of the Browns for "finally" winning a preseason game, let me ask how many the Steelers have won.

No, I am not saying the Browns are a better team at this point.

I don't think Charlie Frye is "the answer." He won't turn around the team by himself, but I think he is good enough that he will help. We need help on the offensive line and corner. I am curious how our front 7 on defense will play as well come the regular season. We also need Winslow and Edwards to come back and have solid years. I really think that Savage and Crennel have the Browns moving in the right direction.

Obie0130 does bring up a good point. To those of you who are Steeler fans, how did you become come a Steeler fan?

A friend I have down here grew up in Pennsylvania. His whole family were Eagles fans. He just decided to be difficult and go against his family and chose the other Pennsylvania team, the Steelers. Although his initial decision and reseaon to follow seem a little childish, I guess he was a child at the time that he decided to follow.

He is a huge Steeler fan and watches all their games down here. He even named his dog Bettis. After the Panthers, it seems like the Steelers are the big team down here in NC.

My brother-in-law is also a huge Steelers fan, although I never really asked how he became one.

So, what lead to you guys becoming Steeler fans?

DAWGH8R
08-20-2006, 10:40 AM
I came from a family whose favorite team, was the one that covered the spread !!!

In grade school, there weren't many games on TV. However, it was when the Steelers started their dynasty. I liked Bradshaw, Franco, Rocky, and the entire "Steel Curtain". When your 10 or 11 years old, geography , for me, didn't play a part in choosing an NFL team.

I remember in grade school, that Tiger Coach LOVED the KC Chiefs, George Nikentenko loved Green Bay, etc, etc.

So, I guess I thought that everyone liked someone different.

I don't HATE the Browns. However, I do like the banter I have with Browns fans. One of my best friends is a Brown's season ticket holder. We badger each other all the time. It's fun !

obie0130
08-20-2006, 12:27 PM
so you became a steeler fan just because when your youth is when they "began their dynasty". ok, that's fine. but, if we were having this converstion in say 1950 would you be telling us that the browns were your favorite team because that was when they had a "dynasty"?

GrowlingTiger87
08-20-2006, 01:11 PM
Same situation for me, except with the Cowboys. I started rooting for them when I was about 6 back in the mid-70's in the days of Roger, Drew, Tony Dorsett, Randy White, etc...

They were on TV a lot, and that's just who I picked up on...then. If it was the 50's maybe I would have been a Browns fan too, but I grew up in the 70's. The two best teams of the 70's were the Cowboys and Steelers (arguably), and as a result, they were on TV a lot. I think that's why there are so many of both fans everywhere.

So, D-H8TR, I know where you're coming from. I still root for the Cowboys to this day, and just saw Troy get inducted 2 weeks ago.

So, what lead to you guys becoming Steeler fans?

austimsm11,

I have been a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan through their pristine championship tradition. I believe in pounding the ball down the throats of the opposition while controlling the clock and wearing down the opposition.

I also believe in physical, bone-breaking play. Remember how the Steelers knocked players out of games in the 70's? Don't forget they also knocked four of New England's best players out of the game in a historic 34-20 win two years ago that ended the Pats' 21-game winning streak? In the 2005 week 3 battle, they knocked five of the Patriots core players out of the game with their physical mentality. Overall, nine Patriots left the game in two meetings against the Steelers!

And you can believe that when the franchise was in the eye of the storm, they never backed down. In 2002, they were 0-2 going up against the playoff-bound Browns and what happened? They rebounded to win in OT and also coming back from a 33-21 deficit to win their 2002 playoff game (A CLASSIC)!

They were in the eye of the storm in 2003 after a 6-10 season. What happened? 2004, they were 16-2 and AFC finalists. 2005: WORLD CHAMPIONS as a six seed (beat three teams on the road)!!!!!

More stats...

71-33-1 this decade
31-7 the last two seasons
First AFC team to win 15 regular-season games
First #6 seed to win three conference playoff games and Super Bowl
First team to derail two undefeated teams late in ONE season
First AFC team with FIVE Super Bowl championships

You're getting this from Keno Sultan personally, who is a lead moderator for a Steelers fanclub I keep up with.

Pittsburgh Steelers football...ranked #1 in the NFL...#1 in the fans' hearts!!!

still no one has answered my question. with the strong lineage between massillon, canton and the cleveland browns, why would someone who claims to be a tiger fan be a steeler fan? keno, we know you are a mck fan first, so one would think that you would also lean towards the browns, since one of the first dominant running backs in pro football was from mck. and played for the browns - not the steelers.

You state that I'm a Canton McKinley fan first. Let me put it to you like this: When I am not in a suit and a tie, that is when I cheer for Canton McKinley. But ONCE that suit and tie goes on my body and I'm taking notes, it's about the game and what I do that counts. Big difference! Do you see me saying "rah-rah-rah c'mon Canton McKinley" in a suit and tie? I think not!

Far as the Browns are concerned, I don't like them and I don't care about them as I am a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, win or lose! Pittsburgh has what Cleveland doesn't have but I'll spare you the details there.........

OK OK.....I'm going to throw up. Keno how do YOU remember what the Steelers did in the 70's? You weren't even FREAKING BORN YET!

"Pittsburgh has what Cleveland doesn't have but I'll spare you the details there........."

This is just rediculous.... Cleveland was one of the original dynasties in the NFL. We won the NFL title 4 times including our first year as a member. If you recall, Keno, the Steelers SUCKED for 40 years. Let's be honest here...The Steelers were a dominant team during the 70's which you never even saw. Your only claim to them was last year's Super Bowl.

Let me ask you one more question.....have you ever been to a game in Pittsburgh?

MUCSteelers5xSuperChamp

I watched those Steelers games of the 70's! They epitomized what football is all about! Hit you, hurt you, dominate you, knock you out of the game...who doesn't favor that?

Ok, Cleveland might have those titles but it doesn't make a difference because the men of St. Mary's have FIVE SUPER BOWL titles and your case isn't validated because five is better than four!

I've never been to a Pittsburgh game but I know that Steelers fans are the best! By the way...don't forget that Emmy-award winning comedian Dennis Miller is from Pittsburgh! And I have a lot of friends that are from Pittsburgh!!

This sounds a little like side-stepping, talking out of both sides of your mouth, speaking with a forked-tongue, applying the old double standard! Now which is it? "Hurt you (ie causing injury) and knocking you out of the game"? or never wish harm or injury to your opponent? You can't have it both ways, bub!

Kamd50,

That came from ESPN's Joe Theismann during the 2005 Steelers-Browns game at Heinz Field. It came after a Troy Polamalu hit and he said to Joe Patrick and the other announcer with him on the Steelers that "They're sending the message that we are the Pittsburgh Steelers and we are going to hit you, hurt you, dominate you, and knock you out of the game."

I got a little carried away with Theismann's message and it somehow rubbed on to me strangely. I apologize...I would never accept the harming of another athlete...they have sons and daughters to care for let alone their family too.

Leave it to you to point the finger at the lead moderator of his own Steelers fanclub.

d-h8, since you were the one sarcasticly making a big deal about the browns winning their first pre-season game, then why are the squeelers 0-3? (before anyone says anything, i realize the nfl preseason means nothing. just responding to an earlier comment.)

Because Pittsburgh could give 3 shits about a preseason game. They are busy getting ready for the playoffs.
On the other hand, Cleveland needs every little piece of positive false hope they can muster. Little steps for the Browns. I guess that's all you can hope for.

So, be happy with your win, and start making plans for late December and January. You Brown's fans will have a LONG off season to take up a hobby.

Thanks for playing though !!!!:doh2:

yeah, i'm sure pitt. doesn't care about the preseason. they can just cancel their games from now on and just show up on opening day. (classy post by the way with the explative).:trophy:

obie0130,

41-0 Steelers over the Browns on Christmas Eve. What a game it was to see the Dawgs go down in flames!

Gosh I loved seeing the Steelers be Scrooge for one day!

Have any of you guys noticed that the Browns have been losing at halftime in all three preseason games. That means the starters are 0-3 against other teams starters. That's not a good sign.

The Browns looked horrid in the loss to the Bears. At least they got thru the game without any injuries. And Kameron Wimbley is a beast! Finally, it looks like the Browns got it right on a first round pick.

The Browns starters on offense gained 7 total yards in 6 plays! But, if you look at the plays, they made 8 yards on 1 pass play (a 3rd & 11 pass that picked up 8 yds). So, on the other 5 plays, they had a net loss of 1 yard. Great offense. I'm calling for Maurice Carthon's job already before the season starts.

I think Carthon will survive the year but I didn't think he was the answer when he was hired (It's about who you know.). That performance was pathetic.

My guess is that the Tigers will have more wins by the end of September than the Browns will have all season. Carthon is in way over his head. I gave him a pass last year due to having Dilfer at QB and KW2 and Edwards injured. No excuses this year.

They have acquired yet another center (their ninth since the end of the 2005 season).

After checking the Brown's schedule, I think they'll go 6 - 10, possibly 7 - 9.

To play .500 ball is out of the question !!!!:doh2:

MassillonMom,

Tell the Browns to skip school...the Steelers are the class of the NFL and the winningest club since 1992!!!!!

KW2 the only bright spot for the Browns in the loss to the Saints. He and Frye seem to be the only ones who care if the team wins or loses.

Braylon Edwards, just like at Michigan, catches everything except the clutch pass at the end. Browns offensive live gets manhandled by Saints. Charlie Frye running for his life in the second half, and makes a few plays on his own. Offensive coordinator Carthon calls a pitch out to the fullback on 3rd and one not once, but TWICE! and gets it stuffed both times.

Stupid penalties kill big plays. Earlier in this thread I predicted the Tigers will have more wins by the end of September than the Browns will all season. I stand by my prediction.

If you can't beat New Orleans AT HOME, you are horrible !!! That's why the Browns lead the league in losses, since their return in 1999 !!

WOOOOHOOOOO !!!!!!

Keep cheering though,.....it's a noble cause !!!!
