Bobby Huth will definately be the one that the team looks to for leadership. Massillon needs to get the baseball program up to par.
Previously, it was opined that the black athletes wouldn't come out for baseball , because of Coach Ridgely. Now that he's gone, they still don't come out.
There have been MANY blacks kids come up through the ranks that were awesome baseball players. Billy Relford was supposed to be spectacular in his day. Why don't these kids play HS ball ?????

baseball requires more green than either basketball or football and if you look at the baseball roster a lot of the kids are from the suburbs a lot of the lower income family's cant continue to pay $300 for a bat $100 for shoes another $200 for glove not to mention not to mention having to pay $30 for batting gloves and bat bags....
this i think discourages many inner city kids from playing baseball as they get older
im not racist thats just my opinion

Suburbs......inner city ......... WTF are you talking about ????
This is Massillon. If a kid needs a glove, bat, spikes, or WHATEVER.........they will have it. This isn't Youngstown or Cleveland.
We don't have suburban and inner city kids. We have MASSILLON kids !!

I'm not familiar with baseball costs today. Is $200 for a good glove accurate? What does it cost for guys who play on the travel teams during the summer? What is the cost for little league? I think we only had to pay like $20 back in the day as long as we sold a box of candybars.
I know that this is an issue with other sports. Some kids just can't afford the equipment or the club/travel teams in the off season.
I'm sure Dawgh8tr is correct that people would step up and help out financially. The problem may be trying to identify who needs/wants the help.

I know that the ORANGEMEN basesball teams, were a HUGE investment. Those kids had to sell a boatload of "raffle tickets" or sorts , to pay their way.
Massillon has a INCREDIBLE feeder system for baseball, and has some very dedicated folks that put a lot of time and effort into grooming these kids as ball players and young men. :rockin:

yes the cost are accurate, in fact i know that a lot of baseball bats today cost around $300, but if kids are strapped money wise i believe something could be worked out, if you want to talk about a sport that cost a lot of money try getting your kid into hockey, as for summer leagues some of them cost around $200 for the summer

Let's see here: mikes_da_man13 sez it might cost $630. McDonald's pays maybe $7/hour - say they get to keep $5 after taxes. By my math, that's 126 hours, or 3 months at 10 hours/week.
But since when does every player need his own $300 bat? Does the school not own any?

when i played at the high school no the school didn't own any, and if you pay 300 dollars for a bat that only has soo many number of hits in it would you want the whole team using your bat?

There's probably only so many strikeouts and one-hoppers to short in it, too. By all means let someone else use it. ;)
Or look at it this way: would you keep your bat for your own use if it meant that another kid didn't play at all?

DL is so right. It is very expensive to play baseball these days. Even in hotstove everyone owns their own bats and are very particular about anyone else using their own if it isn't absolutely necessary. We paid either $125 or $150 this year for signups. And yea, those costs are pretty accurate unless you want inferior equipment that is just going to wear out and end up being even more expensive in the long run from having to make replacement purchases.
I also agree with the cost being a deterent for some kids. I had/have 2 sons in baseball starting out at coach pitch, and have never heard of any type of resources for kids to turn to that couldn't afford it later on. At least if there is, there certainly isn't anything made public about it or any referals to it from leagues, coaches, etc.
The thing about working OW, if your kid is in sports is this: I will use my own son for an example. Right now they go to the highschool 2 nights a week after school for weightlifting for football for next season. Baseball practices are usually at the least 3 nights a week, usually 4, and then you will have your games on top of that. Not to mention, much needed time to actually spend at home on homework, reading, and so forth. Not a lot of time to work in a job, unfortunately.

so many strikeouts? if your talking about me batting then my bat had a lot of strikeouts lol
if a kid wasn't going to play im sure someone would let him use their bat but trust me a lot of kids today don't let anyone else touch their bat

I was going to say, you're probably getting off lucky if you can find a bat at 300. It's really outrageous what you pay for sports equipment in general these days!
Obie Wan
03-12-2007, 01:12 AM
Geez, I dunno - do bats wear out?
The big problem here is that the sales hype (e.g. golf clubs) is trickling further and further down. A cheap bat doesn't make you strike out, and a $100 glove doesn't have a hole in it. Fer chrissakes, Omar Vizquel grew up using milk cartons.

Maybe some athletes would rather run track. Maybe some really don't care that much for baseball. Just because some are great athletes and would probably be good at baseball doesn't mean they're required to do so.

There's no fee to play high school baseball. The team does have bats, batting helmets, and catchers equipment but in most cases the kids have their own. The 3 catchers that come to mind (my son included) have their own equipment and everybody has their own glove. The past 3 years we've paid a fee ($50 or $60) for shoes but this year the kids could buy thier own--we apent about $100. This year the JV and Varsity are going to Florida and I think that costs $150 or $200. Then add all the little things--batting gloves, tape, pine tar, advil, band-aids, palm gaurds (hey my kids a catcher) and the cost adds up.
Bobby has played since Bantam League . I remember Mike Porrini playing when he was in Little League but (lets be honest) basketball is his sport and I'm sure that what he plays in the summer.
All I know is that when Bobby leaves here with his equipment bag for baseball practice SPRING is almost here!!!!!!!!

It's expensive. My son (11 years old) has about $750 worth of bats in his bag right now. Stealths, DiMarinis, and then big-barreled Stealths for AAU. No, this is NOT a cheap sport. And yes, Obiewan, bats DO lose their pop after so many hits. You have to replace bats at least every year and sometimes more often. That's where the game is these days, folks. It's reality.
What does a wood Louisville Slugger bat cost these days :scratchchin:

There's wooden bat tournaments that the boys have played in in the past. The boys really like them because its something different. I can't remember how much the wooden bats cost but Bobby could go thru 2 or 3 (or more) a tournament. Of course there was always someone at the tournament selling bats!!!!!!

Granted, this was 10-11 years ago, but when my boys played Little League ball, I got their gloves at the "Play-It-Again-Sports" store; a NEW Mizuno glove there was @ $50, and a USED (ie, nicely broke-in) Rawlings for $30. I've also seen gloves for sale at K-mart / Wal-mart for $50 and that was last season.
Please don't tell me inflation has driven the prices of baseball gloves THAT much!!
I can cope with the concept of "professional" players spending $250--$300 on a ball glove, but not a high-school kid.

As much money as the football team brings in no sport should suffer in Massillon. I think kids today are spoiled. I made a bad decision in high school and my beautiful daughter was born my senior year. I worked, paid for my car insurance, and still played golf and baseball. My grades nor athletic abilities were affected by this. Still good enough to get scholarship offers. Growing up, the schools supplied the equipment(except gloves). If you want to purchase your own equipment fine, but stop whining about the cost of things.
When I say I worked, I worked every day a ball game or golf match was not scheduled. I went to school, practice, work, and then home. It all depends on your support system, mine was very good. Not to say you aren't being supported. But work, school, and athletics are all possible to acheive. Now to the other topic. Massillon has great athletes in all sports, just go to a little league game, or hot stove game. The focus in Massillon seems to always be football tho. So when these kids get older They tend concentrate on football more than anything else. This is where we lose our athletes and why Massillon's other teams are not as competitive as our football! Just one mans opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love Massillon, and support ALL the teams!

Congrats on working your tail off to get where you are, based on some decisions you made early in life when you were younger. Bottom line is you have a beautiful daughter, you recognize what you did and worked your ASS off to make things right, and you have now learned from it and become a better person. The world needs more people like you that don't freaking feel sorry for themselves and expect a damn handout everytime they turn around just because something didn't go right for them. Good luck to you.

Lorenzo, Broughton (7) and Sitzlar. Lambert, Boney (5) and Huth. WP-Lorenzo 2-0. LP-Lambert. HRs-Lake: Lorenzo (3), James (3), Chack (1).
Records Lake 10-6; Massillon 11-5.
Notes For Lake, Michael Chack had four hits and Scott James, Derek Fraser, Brett Sitzlar and Micah Stair had two hits each. Kyle Dingler had two hits and two RBIs, and Chris Willoughby and Trey Miller added two hits apiece for the Tigers.
I believe Lambert would be considered the number 3 pitcher on the staff and wasn't as sharp as he is capable of along with unearned runs cost the Tigers a win.
If the defense tightens up with the depth in the pitching staff this team is capable of making some noise in the tournament.

Tigers REALLY have a deep pitching staff this year. Deepest I've seen in some time. Should pay BIG dividends when other teams could suffer from some "tired arms" late in the year !!! :gogogo: :gogogo:

While it is true that baseball is expensive, I think the development of these "feeder" leagues have really caused baseball to lose the high quality athlete. There are some benefits to the feeder systems, but they can also be used to exclude kids from participation, particularly as they get closer to high school level. That elite attitude has been used by some, to include some former Tiger coaches that have passed through, as a means of getting exactly who they want and did not want on the high school team. Too often the feeder systems force kids to decide to play baseball exclusively, and that seldom will do well in the Massillon community against football.

Seems like every year you look forward to the baseball team doing well, and this happens. Sometimes you wonder about them going on the Florida trip. None of the other Stark County teams do it---where are the results? It would seem that the final outcome of the season(s) don't merit the wonderful spring trip.
