Anyone hear anything more on Devoe coming to Massillon? Although we have 2 great backs in Herring and Turner, at 6'2" 210 lbs.,sounds like we could use him at linebacker eh? (This is my first ever post-its good to be aboard!) :heee:

I would assume that is was deleted a few weeks ago because it was purely rumor and speculation at the time. The story has since been mentioned in print.

I happen to think that JT has a very bright future in football but let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet. First of all, as a running back, he really needs to work on reading his blocks better and he also needs to RUN WITH SOME AUTHORITY, and not tip toe through the line of scrimmage, like he did frequently last season.
His future after high school could very well be as a safety!!

No '91, we are talking about the same JT. I never said that he was not an outstanding athlete, I simply made a couple of observations about how he played last year. He DOES need to run harder at ALL TIMES, not just when he sees daylight. He did not show the ability/willingness to put his head down and get the tough yardage between the tackles, like a GREAT back does when the hole is not there.
He also needs to learn to read the blocks better, which should come with more carries.
If you want to think that Turner was a hard runner, then just think back to the last two seasons and how Gamble ran the ball. BG NEVER shied away from contact!

He can be taking classes at WHS, but due to the 1 year eligibility rule, he won't be playing for the Tigers next year unless either Canton South signs off on the Athletic Transfer, or he establishes legal residency in the school district.
(If I'm wrong, sombody correct me.)

With all due respect, we disagree on this one.
I wish BG had shied away from some of the contact, since he very frequently was stopped dead in his tracks.
A little fancy footwork from him like JT was showing might have won us another game or two this year.
I'm not clear on why an RB should be praised for seeking contact.
I always thought an RB was praised for the contact he avoids.
Clue me in...I don't know much about football.

Seeker, with all due respect, there are times when a running back should inititate contact. Like when there is not much of a hole, instead of tip toeing through the hole, a great back will put his head down ands get what he can get.
Another case would be the long run that Gamble broke off against Hamilton down our sideline going toward the flagpole end of the stadium. He was going to get caught so instead of just running out of bounds, he lowered his shoulder and delivered a blow to the defender which ended up gaining him a few extra yards. Do these examples help?

Just keep in mind Chronic, 1 of those two running backs that you are talking about has NOT been able to complete a season healthy, and has serious issues when it comes to holding on to the football.

I learned this from a few pretty good backs--my brother, Jason Stafford, and J. Myricks growing up with them. It is three rules to being a effective RB:
1. Avoid all contact if possible-- run past defenses
2. Around or over--- moves, fakes, leeps, spins, etc,...
3. run through
In this order. 3 RB's from Massillon who grew up together with the same rules caused them to run for over 1000 yards one after another for a few years in the late 80's and early 90's.
BG was a physical runner that likes contact--a safety playing RB for the good of the team.
JT is a natural RB that has the moves, speed, and talent to execute the 3 rules with alittle more physical toughness at the end of runs.
Torrence--- When he gets to Massillon (according to The Voice) the kid will show people he is the real deal and WILL play both ways and will help us dominate Region 2 in 2007! Devoe is way better than Devon and he is headed to OSU if he does not sign a pro baseball contract this Spring. We will have the most dominating running game in Ohio---- our Oline should have all the motivation in the world to prove they can get it done with potentally 3 DI RB's in the backfield. Stacy could have alot of teams worried when they see those studs in the backfield.
Georgio Jackson should lead the state in yards per catch because teams will be playing 8/9 in the box against us and will have one on one coverage ALL GAME!!!
ChronicTIger---- WE WANT TORRENCE!!!! Torrence might just be the missing piece to the title!!!!!

My 2 cents. I dont necessarily like transfers but it happens at every school. But in this case I think the situation is different due to the strong family ties in Massillon. So yeah, I definitely hope he "comes home" to use a Bulldog phrase.
Secondly, I wholeheartedly agree w/ Monte & others so I wont restate it. Just to expand on 1 thing "most" (I wont say all) the great backs had, and all the experts talk about - VISION. Did you ever see Travis miss a cut? Hardly ever. You just cant teach it. JT was just a soph playing against the best in the state so let the kid develop, but I see glimpses of that.

Travis was a differant animal---he watched all the great backs like Payton, Dorsett, Billy Sims, etc,... DAILY!! and looked up to J. Myricks and wanted to be better than he was. travis was thinking about the 2nd/3rd level moves--vison is key!
As a child
We played this game in the hood called "Trip Travis" where Trav would run and we all would try to trip him up---he was younger so we were not allowed to tackle him!! He was so good at the game that he sometimes went untouched for 15-20 minutes at a time in the Jones field. Thats when we knew he could be a good RB! JT is like Travis in the way he runs but FASTER and will be a great one before its all said and done!

Exactly: Around, Over, Through
If you can go around them, you go over them. If you can't go over them, you go through them.

I guess since I started this thread, I'll reply. Speaking of running backs, I agree that J.T. is gonna be a great one. I've heard that Herring might end up at linebacker. My original comment was made as a joke to Monte and i assume Hack was joking with the "blind man clocking me" comment. I dont know how old you are or if you were around in my day but the forty times were ligit if you dont believe watch some game films and notice how when i run with the ball it looks like everyone is moving in slow motion and i'm on roller skates.
Quote from the Independent 1988
"The senior fullback rushed for 156 yards in 10 carries Friday. When you score on an 85‑yard run, as Jason Stafford did in the second quarter while showing off his 4.3 speed in the 40 (times two) the defense is in and out.Barberton apparently had a good scouting report on Stafford. After Momchilov, who also plays safety, dove at Stafford and missed, he buried his faceguard in the turf. He knew no one would catch the blazing fullback. By the time Stafford reached the goal line, his closest pursuers were 20 yards behind".

Our Rb's in 2007 will give us some of that excitement!! We have the most speed in the backfield since maybe 1991!!!! If DT comes---WOW!!!!

In 1988 we went through a transition of coaches and playbooks but we knew that we were good and being suspended from the playoffs was not going to stop us from being the best Tigers we could be despite our frustration with the system. Our defense gave up 12.9 points a game and averaged 27!!! Defense and a solid running game will get it done everytime!!! We were that good in 1987 but Coach Moronto didn't know how to place personell and it costs us big games.

Hack, let me take you back in time for a moment incase your memory is a bit foggy from the hits you took while playing running back:heee: Yes it's true that i lost five yards on my last carry of the Mckinley game which brought my season total to 998. What you don't know is that the 998 yards rushing reflects only five full games played. i missed one entire game due to injury and four games in which i only played the first half. You are a teacher so i am going to let you do the math.
Yeah and as a basketball player I would have averaged 21 points a game if I played in evey quarter!!!!!! That is what teachers call creative math!!!! Not to mention if they would have counted all my foul balls as home runs, just ask Crackerman. What about if in baseball the other team did not walk me my junior year I might have broken Coach Herring's batting record instead of being eight points shy. Man I love this creative math stuff!!!!

The point i was making is that every full game i played in i exceded 100 yards rushing so its pretty safe to say that it would have happend in the games that i missed. also i only played the first half in our 7th,8th and ninth games(all of which i had close to or over 100 yards) which is why i came into the Mckinley game with 880yds.

I would rather pull down 25 boards than get 25 points in a bball game!!! I was playing PF at 6'1" playing against 6'6" plus dudes every game! Playing OLB made me a pretty good rebounder but I had Joe Pierce, Lee Hurst, etc,... to score but my guards made sure I got my share of touches.

Your post has some substance to that. Torrence is an asset well utilized by Canton South partiarch Moe Daniska and I saw Torrence play against Alliance last year!
If Torrence comes to Massillon, it will bolster the ever-so-powerful and growing Massillon Tigers running attack with Torrence, Justin Turner, K.J. Herring, Cooper Ivan, and Chris Thornton...that's an attack that could hurt even the best defenses if used to perfection!
Massillon hasn't had a dominant running attack since Ricky Johnson, Tuffy Woods, and Terrance Roddy were in the backfield in 2002.

Substance????? Keno I like you but substance??? DT is the #2 rated player in the State of Ohio behind Brandon Beauchman(Mooney) and could play for ANY TEAM IN THE COUNTRY!!! He will start wherever he plays!!!! I thought you were talking about Hack, Jason, and I!!! 3 Di football players having some fun with each other!
OH--- Canton South's coach aint no big deal--- he had both Torrence's and Terrance Evans(McKinley) and could not get past round 2 of the playoffs. If he could not win with the squad he had last year he's not going to get it done!!! He had the kids stacked up when he had multiple threats to confuse and plot on teams but kept it real simple and was sent packing!! When you have superior athletes the coach still has to put them in position to make plays!!!!

you don't think 2005 was pretty good? afterall, the stats for 2002 and 2005 are pretty close.
2005 we had 2500+ yards rushing from BG and Lanelle! The backfield of Oliver, TK and R. Jackson in 2001 was better than jackson, woods, and Roody!!!
OH YEAH-- you can always walk the halls of Washington High School and find someone capable of running for 1000 yards!

With the intelligence, or lack thereof, that you showed with this post you probably played QB for six years in junior high, Einstein. Now, go back to your farm in Louisville and leave the Massillon boys alone.
Class dismissed.

You played QB for six years!!! I wouldn't brag about that unless it was at the high school or college level. We are good friends from back in the day talking about legitimate 40 yard dash times. The former tiger we were discussing and talking with ran the fastest time ever recorded to my knowledge by any Massillon tiger and the proof is in the Indy!!! Glory days--- 3 athletes talking about journeys from HS to DI college football, workouts, and education---- EVERY MASSILLON TIGER FOOTBALL PLAYER CAN LEARN SOMETHING FROM TALKING TO US---- ask Darion, BG, Daily, etc,... what knowledge I bring to them in a five minute conversation!! Jason S. and I worked out with those kids since they were in jr. high school before most of you knew anything about their talents and most of them are going to the next level. I guess I know alittle something about football life and how to prepare!!
Anyway---all this talk about DT is getting old for sure! The kid will be here before summer practice and thats that or he will suit up for CS!!!! However I beleive he will be a tiger!

He seems like the real deal... I notice from the video that he can catch the ball coming out of the backfield, and THAT is ALWAYS nice to have.
This is a good website, thanks for the link. There is video of Steve Schott on there as well, and it is worth watching.

Devoe Torrence is rated as the #2 recruit in the state and is being recruited by the best programs in the Midwest at TWO positions.
Just off the top of my head we havent had a Tiger recruited that highly at two positions since Tommy Hannon....thats 35 years ago.
A little more perspective...
The last RB we had recruited that highly was Travis McGuire. The last LB we had recruited that highly was Chris Spielman.
The only two Tigers I can think of who were recruited that highly before their senior seasons were Spielman and Justin Zwick.
What he may or may not do on the field is a story in and of itself, but going by what the major collegiate programs are thinking, Torrence would be in some very rare historical company if he became a Tiger.

Maybe someone can provide a little more insight for me. From what I have read, he wants to come play at Massillon with some of his friends. In order to do this his family would have to buy or rent a place in Massillon. Even doing these things, wouldn't they need to make it look like or prove that this Massillon home is their primary residence?
Why wait until your senior year to do this?
I can understand some players wanting to do this to prove themselves against better competition, but he already has a ton of great offers while at South.
Is he unhappy with the new coaches there?

Hard sayin'. Maybe he's unhappy with the prospect of another 10-game season.

Speaking of glory days, I have (in mint condition) the program of the 1940 Mass.-McK. game-Paul Brown's last game at Massillon. Does anybody know if this is worth anything? I found it in my dearly departed Grandmother's attic.

Not to sidetrack but I saw the Beachum kid from Mooney play and thought he was the best LB I saw all year. Didn't see DT though. I believe OSU has offered DT at LB already & they know what they're doing. But check out the video of this other kid. I hope the bucks land both!

From Porter's column in today's Rep (March 25, 2007):
TORRENCE TRANSFER
Now that Canton South linebacker-running back DeVoe Torrence has verbally committed to Ohio State, his next choice is to pick a high school. Last month, Torrence said he was looking at transferring to Massillon. That would require a move into the Massillon City School District. We're told such a move could happen, or Torrence will establish residency in Massillon near the end of the current quarter.
