MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The last time Ohio State was No. 1 in the AP men's basketball poll, John Havlicek, Jerry Lucas and a sub named Bob Knight were leading the Buckeyes to the NCAA championship game.

That was 45 years ago, but after Greg Oden and No. 2 Ohio State breezed to an 85-67 victory over Minnesota on Sunday, Hondo and the General might finally have some company...

The Bucks were already #1 in the ESPN/USA Today poll earlier this season. I thought they also had been #1 in the AP, but apparently not.

Florida has been #1 for weeks, When Oh ST had injuries early this and lost a couple, they fell in the rankings. Ohio State currently has 3 losses.

Ohio State was ranked number one earlier this year. At that time they lost to North Carolina. Then they climbed all the way back to number 2 before losing to Florida.

The beauty of college basketball is that it doesn't matter where you are ranked during the season. There is actually a tournament to TRULY determine the National Champion.

CarlE,

Since 1996, only three teams that have been #1 have gone wire-to-wire and won the NCAA basketball championship (1996 Kentucky, 2000 Michigan State, and 2004 Connecticut).

Once again the polls are split. The issue will become clearer Sunday in Columbus.

You replacing Wayne Newton? From hearing him at the NBA All Star game, it's probably a good idea.

Was he lip sinking, or was the audio/video feed not in sync ??? He is now a mockery of his former self. Used to be a good show in Vegas.

Michigan should not pose a huge threat to the Buckeyes quest. OH ST should be a big favorite to win that game !:TIG2:

I think Wisconsin may be a better team in the Big Ten. I guess we will see. I have a feeling Michigan St. could be scary.

In the NCAA, I think it is really going to be wide open. I wonder if Kansas will have a run.
