Today's Black History Month's Person of the Day is:

Oprah Winfrey (1954- )
Television talk-show host, actress, producer.

http://msnbcmedia3.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/070102/070102_oprah_hmed_7a.hmedium.jpg

Born January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. After a troubled adolescence in a small farming community, where she was sexually abused by a number of male relatives and friends of her mother, Vernita, she moved to Nashville to live with her father, Vernon, a barber and businessman. She entered Tennessee State University in 1971 and began working in radio and television broadcasting in Nashville.

In 1976, Winfrey moved to Baltimore, where she hosted the TV chat show, People Are Talking. The show became a hit and Winfrey stayed with it for eight years, after which she was recruited by a Chicago TV station to host her own morning show, A.M. Chicago. Her major competitor in the time slot was Phil Donahue. Within several months, Winfrey's open, warm-hearted personal style had won her 100,000 more viewers than Donahue and had taken her show from last place to first in the ratings. Her success led to nationwide fame and a role in Steven Spielberg's 1985 film, The Color Purple, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Winfrey launched the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986 as a nationally syndicated program. With its placement on 120 channels and an audience of 10 million people, the show grossed $125 million by the end of its first year, of which Winfrey received $30 million. She soon gained ownership of the program from ABC, drawing it under the control of her new production company, Harpo Productions ('Oprah' spelled backwards) and making more and more money from syndication.

In 1994, with talk shows becoming increasingly trashy and exploitative, Winfrey pledged to keep her show free of tabloid topics. Although ratings initially fell, she earned the respect of her viewers and was soon rewarded with an upsurge in popularity. Her projects with Harpo have included the highly rated 1989 TV miniseries, The Women of Brewster Place, which she also starred in. Winfrey also signed a multi-picture contract with Disney. The initial project, 1998's Beloved, based on Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Toni Morrison and starring Winfrey and Danny Glover, got mixed reviews and generally failed to live up to expectations.

Winfrey, who became almost as well-known for her weight loss efforts as for her talk show, lost an estimated 90 pounds (dropping to her ideal weight of around 150 pounds) and competed in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, in 1995. In the wake of her highly publicized success, Winfrey's personal chef, Rosie Daley, and trainer, Bob Greene, both published best-selling books.

The media giant contributed immensely to the publishing world by launching her "Oprah's Book Club," as part of her talk show. The program propelled many unknown authors to the top of the bestseller lists and gave pleasure reading a new kind of popular prominence. With the debut in 1999 of Oxygen Media, a company she co-founded that is dedicated to producing cable and Internet programming for women, Winfrey ensured her place in the forefront of the media industry and as one of the most powerful and wealthy people in show business. In 2002, she concluded a deal with the network to air a prime-time complement to her syndicated talk show. Her highly successful monthly, O: The Oprah Magazine debuted in 2000, and in 2004, she signed a new contract to continue The Oprah Winfrey Show through the 2010-11 season. The show is seen on 212 U.S. stations and in more than 100 countries worldwide.

According to Forbes magazine, Oprah was the richest African American of the 20th century and the world's only Black billionaire for three years running. Life magazine hailed her as the most influential woman of her generation. In 2005, Business Week named her the greatest Black philanthropist in American history. Oprah's Angel Network has raised more than $51,000,000 for charitable programs, including girls' education in South Africa and relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Winfrey is a dedicated activist for children's rights; in 1994, President Clinton signed a bill into law that Winfrey had proposed to Congress, creating a nationwide database of convicted child abusers. She founded the Family for Better Lives foundation and also contributes to her alma mater, Tennessee State University. In September, 2002, Oprah was named the first recipient of The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.

Since 1992, Winfrey has been engaged to Stedman Graham, a public relations executive. The couple lives in Chicago, and Winfrey also has homes in Montecito, California, Rolling Prairie, Indiana, and Telluride, Colorado.

LIGHTEN UP!! This entire thread has been started to do nothing but elicit arguments. It's the forte' of the poster and has been going on for quite awhile. And Tim Hardaway lives in a country where free speech is ALLOWED, Mister. Just like burning the flag, or protesting the war, some of the things YOU probably believe are OK. And I know TigerCoach personally. There isn't a racist bone in his body. If you KNEW him, and KNEW the fact that he has adopted two foreign children you would know what a knucklehead you are making out of yourself. In addition to the fact that he's "gonna hear it from Me" is probably the LEAST of is worries. LOL.

Now, on to fat Oprah. She's made her money off the stupidity of America, particularly the female race who believes every freaking word that comes out of her mouth. And if she as so much touches a book, idiot America runs right out and buys it. How STUPID. America is LAZY. This tub allows them to be lazy and not research whether they will like a book or not. Oh yeah, one more thing. Let's get TomKat idiot to go back on her show and jump on the couch again, OK?

can youcount how many black friends you have had over for dinner.....If you agree with a racist your a racist.Would you agree?

first, if you agree with racist VIEWS you're a racist.....however to generally say that if you agree with a racist you are a racist is absurd. it all depends on what you're agreeing with.

second, the amount of black friends a white person has or has over to dinner is in no way indicitive of whether or not someone is racist. there are many black people out there who do not have white friends, but yet aren't racist.

Just wait a minute, Carle, Tiger36 and DragonTigerNemisis!

THIS IS NOT OVER UNTIL I SAY IT'S OVER. Now, listen up real good boys, because your about to get an education. First of all, thanks for covering my back, Carle, I was out of town most of today and just got back to my office to find these idiotic posts by people who don't even know me.

If you knew me, you would know that I'm about as racist as Abraham Lincoln. The only thing I'm racist against is STUPID PEOPLE. I have friends who are black, asian, latino, etc. and have no problems with any of them. We eat dinner together, we drink together, we play with each other's children. Thoughout my athletic career and still in my coaching & refereeing careers I've gotten to work with and become friends with many types of people of various backgrounds and races. I have a black nephew in my family via marriage. I am Godfather for one of my bi-racial great nephews. And, as Carle mentioned, I have two adopted children from South Korea. Lastly, let me add that I'm involved with a 13 year old black boy via the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. I've also drank MD 20/20 many times. How the hell does that make anything racist? Because you are relating MD 20/20 with racism, are you a racist? Because I also like fried chicken, collared greens and grits does that make me racist? I used to live in the deep south, boys, and happen to think very highly of people there. Sometimes. I think more highly of those people than the ones I'm around. If you come to a tailgate party with us, you may find a bottle of MD 20/20 there. I'll even buy you a bottle if you want.

I also mentioned Tim Hardaway for a couple reasons. First, I think this "Black Person of the Month" is ridiculous. Do we have "White/Spanish/German/Italian Person of the Month"? I think people are being ignorant and racist for wanting to push their heritage on everyone else. Secondly, I mentioned Tim Hardaway because I don't have a problem with what he said. When we get punished for something we believe in, even though it is highly the consensus in our society, we might as well call our country the U.S.S.R. and not the U.S.A. We have become a country of a bunch of wimps because we're afraid of either offending someone or get sued by someone.

I can go on, but I think I made my point. Your knowledge level has just been improved, at least your knowledge of TigerCoach. I will accept your apologies in the form of beer or Kraus' Pizza only. Class dismissed.

hmmmmmmm.

By your "hmmmmmmmm", I'm wondering if perhaps you are a history teacher?

Methinks the argument has previously taken place here, but that won't stop me from starting it up again.

Abraham Lincoln may have freed the slaves, but he was, by definition, an avowed racist.

After reading the posts here, and in other threads, I've decided that some of the members here are indeed, quite racist.

However, they don't seem to know what racism is, so they are unaware that it applies to them.

They are rallying around each other, and coming to each other's defense, but they are not fooling anyone.
Some of the remarks, particularly the "MD 20-20" remark, were indeed racist, or at the very least racial profiling.

I have decided that for several of the men here, it is still the early 70's at good old WHS.

They still don't get it and I doubt they ever will.

"I'm not racist, I have Black friends, and not only do I have them in my home, I even had one in my wedding party!"
Racist remarks like that make me want to puke. Not because they are racist, but because forty years later they are still without a clue.

This has gotten absolutly assanine...is that how you even spell that word?

36 did you actually write "too many negative things are said about black people"? ok...name a couple of those things please. Racist jokes or "I heard this guy Billy once say" does not count....Why?...because I have heard just as many white jokes....and hispanic jokes....and asian jokes.....and irish jokes...shall I continue? Just remember whatever you counter with, I have Dave Chappelle's white guy and Howard Dean impersination to show you. Am I offended as a white man that a black comedian makes fun of white people? Helllllllll no......its funny. I also have some Chris Rock footage and some Amateur night at the Apollo. Wait, wait , wait, how would I know those things, oh my god, Im white...I shouldnt know or watch those things. Mad Dog 20/20...ahhh the good ole days I prefered grape personally. Heck what ever happened to 40's? Old 'E'....St. Ides? Is that racist? Because if you play that on me thats the wrong thing to do.
I am all for Black History Month, I think it promotes an overall knowledge of society that we need. Now when we get to individual people being named "person of the day"...that could be seen as a little too much. The Hardaway comment...That would be like on George Washington's birthday, a black person saying "what's next?...Bill Clinton day?" BTW, for those still confused, Clinton is white.
TigerNemisis you bring up racial profiling? OUR ENTIRE WORLD is a freaking racial and socio-economical profile. White folks from West Virginia and Kentucky are in-bred....yes some are...but not all. Same as white people from the south are in the KKK and carry rebels flags in their trucks... Yes some do...but not all. If mad Dog 20/20 was a strictly black beverage...then I screwed up the percentages with that in my youth...I was born in the South, I like Sweet tea, black eyed peas, I love ham and bean soup, we eat cornbread and biscuits with dinners instead of bread. We grew up on Sweet Potato Pie and pan fried chicken. I love bar-b-que (as in a pig-picking, hog roast...no red bbq sauce...straight pig), I love grits with butter and salt and pepper, and to top it all off....lord have mercy... I love collard greens with a touch of pepper vinegar. Now I look back and think.... I need to have a talk with my mama, because according to some on here...She didn't make me enough "white" food growing up....and here all these years I thought we were just having a family dinner.
racial tension exists in the country because of ignorance. Because people do not know when to bring up a valid point and to argue and when just to say hey...Thats really not that bad. Hell if you havent noticed my name has been the same on here for 4 years since I first signed up. Its not because I have a cracker addiction...not because i love Ritz, not because Im a chiropractor(sp).....It's simple... Im just a CRACKER.....MAN. (by the way, does that make me racist towards my own race?)

You know that it's not PC to even have a civil discussion on this topic, because we're white, and obviously shouldn't be able to express our opinions.

What has happened to this country and this world where we can't even express our opinions without fear of getting hung out to dry. You know, even though I disagree with Tim Hardaway and his statements, at least we know where he stands, and has played his cards face up on the table.

GEEZ, say what you mean, and mean what you say. PC crap is ruining this country moreso NOW than racism is (NOW).

I'm not racist, but if someone truly IS a racist, they will eventually hang their own self, and THEY ultimately have to deal with the consequences. But from what I can tell, no one in here has made one blantantly racist statement.

Juuuuuuuuust for the record, when I speak of learning something from that thread, I am referring to the thread from long ago that was about Abe Lincoln etc. Concerning point #3, that must have been the beginning of CarlE'sd prosperous future, LOL! And just out of curiousity, what is point #6 about? or is it just a generalization? You know me well enough that I like things clarified:wink:

Lastly, I do agree that too many people seem to take too many things too much to heart these days when no ill-will was intenntionally meant.
Just for the sake of throwing it out there, I am of Italian descent. I don't care if someone talks about Italians as dagos or wops or mafia or w/e. Or puts Italian women into the 2 stereo-typical categories of either the Gina Lollabrigida type or the overweight Italian mamma that spends most of her time in the kitchen cooking up homemade food and always has extra on hand for whomever may come through the door (of which I am LOL)!
I just don't care! NEVER have NEVER will (care about what other people say or think)! There are some posters on here that know me very personally and can attest that I have taken that philosophy to heart during my lifetime. My philosophy on that is that you waste way too much of your own short, valuable time you have been given to live on this earth if you do.
I have learned that actions truely do speak louder than words......and that we should all simply LIVE our lives!

The good thing is here on MassillonProud, that we do all share one strong common bond, and that is our love of OUR Massillon Tigers:love:

2) Dawgh8r was a underage delinquint buying MD 20/20 at age 14.
3) Carle was the youngest person to ever embezzle money, his lunch money that his dad worked hard for and he spent it on alcohol.
4) Crackerman likes his grits with salt & pepper. (I like sugar on mine!)
5) "Too many negative things are said about black people", according to Tiger36. Not white people, just blacks.
6) Some people take things way too seriously. Like basing your beliefs on what you see on TV.

This is the one of the funniest posts I've read on here in a long time there David Duke!! LOL. And my MOM is the one that worked hard for my alcohol money, thank you.

OK lets make this clear....I dont like racial jokes.Of any kind of,especially the little hidden ones. You can lie and sugar coat it with a wall of BS.But i can see through it.A lot can.You guys back peddle and try to be sly about "What is REALLY MENT IS " a bunch of racist inuendoes. What I have seen is a buch of cowards,If you have a problem with certain races dont hide it,little girls and boys be an adult and really say it. America was formed by Immagrants"FORCED IMMAGRANTS" .Forced not to have freedoms, forced by Hangings, forced by rapes, forced by NOT BEING ALLOWED TO READ AND WRITE. MY ANCESTERS Never said "hey, lets jump on this cruise ship this looks like a fun time. I know that there were indentured slaves that were white as the same a blacks in which they subsequently stayed where they were formaly slaves but worked the land because THATS ALL THEY KNEW.They didnt know that there was a bigger and better America and that they could broaden their horizon. So with this BLACK HISTORY MONTH.It's not only for blacks, there is a lesson for all people that feel opressed and are in thier own struggle to succeed.they can see that a MINORITY raised POOR can CHOOSE to be educated and make something out of themselves into a productive citizen of these United States. How is this affecting those of you that feel forced to have Black History Month forced upon you.Think of the people that was forced here and died before they even reached land. America is the Land of opportunity, and any opportunity that helps people with thier own strugle is a opportunity that should be granted.

One day all this Hatred among EACH other will be gone. The SCARY PART for some of the posters is guess what.Your daughters ,sons, great grandchildren will wake up in the morning with a person of minority" IN LOVE",or say"Guess who's coming to dinner". Thats when there will be one less racist on this earth because somebodys gonna have a heart attack.

not all immigrants were forced to come here. you also use the word "forced" too loosely. many irish were "forced" to come here b/c of the potato famine, but is was their choice. others came here for better opportunities.

yes, some were physically forced. however, it's funny how you fail to mention the african tribe leaders who sold their own people into slavery.

although slavery is a part of our history (unfortunately), it wasn't just slaves who made america what it is today.

Just out of curiousity, what was the literacy rate in tribal Africa in the 17th and 18th centuries?

I can't answer that question statisticly but i can say most Africans spoke 4 or 5 different languages as they do today while here in America the majority of people (white or black) can barely speak proper English.

I have to agree with tiger36 about the sugarcoating and trying to be slick in the other thread. It was pretty obvious to all. I don't think it was intentional, just a joke that was not well thought out and not in the appropriate place. All of us have made similiar comments in life. We all make mistakes. Some admit them and some won't.

I can't speak for others, but I do get tired of black history month in the sense of why can't black history be studied in the overall context of history. I don't hear women complaining that we need a Women's history month or about not having Irish-American month. We study and learn of these things in the overall context of our history. I get tired of black people wanting equal rights, yet places like the NFL force teams to interview a black person even if he may or may not be the best man for the job. I am tired of how it is ok to have a station called BET but not for one called WET (and get your minds out of the gutters lol).

What I would be all for is for some good dialogue without all the BS all of us have been posting. I, for one, would learn something from it. Thoughts from all races as to how they feeling individually and as a race on these different racial topics (and in a civil manner).

You're probably all thankful I've held my typing fingers, at least until now. Would someone show this 36 how to run a spell check? I can't take it anymore.

Well, NOW you've gone and done it. Next thing you know we'll have a kamd50 month, a TLFA month, a Marie month, a TigerMom month. That's it. I'm going on hiatus until this blows over.

I think it is pretty obvious how many of us feel on this topic.

I would love to hear from monte, keno, and other black posters how they feel. LTFT posted an interesting link about how some black people feel like it isn't good to only focus on black accomplishments only during this month and that it is kind of a like a pity thing.

I don't know of any other races post on this board, but if there are, I would like to know how they feel as well. Do they feel left out because their race isn't doesn't have a history month?

I stayed off the topics for the most part because people can think, say, and feel how they want. A person who is racist or prejudiced is either uneducated on race relations or refuse to change--those who defy the word in the end will get what is coming to them from OUR FATHER. I cannot speak for anyone about who is or is not racist in Massillon, this forum , or any other human being walking the earth. I will say that Black History Month would not be needed if adecuate and evenly taught ciriculums were written and developed in our classrooms. Also it is the parents responsibility to ultimately teach heritage and leadership. I will say that beyond the glitter of PBTS there will always be some type of racial division in Massillon because of the economic gaps because the success stories of the black community do not return to massillonbut to see games or visit family on holidays and thats because we cannot find adeqaute employment at home.

I will say that I try not to get to read into what I read and take under consideration if I know the person personally or not bares weight on my comments in the return or non comment. I am not racist or prejudice so to each his/her own. I will say that a person who lets me know where they stand on the issue I can respect and would rather have the choice rather to be in their surroundings other than for professional purposes.

I will say that 90% of the football team drank 20/20, Wild Irish Rose, Pink Champelle, and a variety of whatever we could drink back in the day. I remember hanging out on Valeside NE my Soph and junior year with the whole team, xplayers, cheerleaders, and whoever else was invited. If you were down back in the mid-late 80's you know about all the bashes in the woods on pearl or down on the farm in Navarre!!! Most of us that I still associate with are professionals making mid/high level salaries living in the suberbs--black and white.
Lastly--Stereotypes are the biggest factor in why we have racial misunderstandings!!!!
