Big Ten Preview: A Change at the top
By Jeff Frank, Contributing Editor
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Big Ten Conference had two teams in the top-five after last season's final poll was released. Penn State was third after its triple overtime Orange Bowl win over Florida State, while Ohio State finished fourth after crushing Notre Dame, 34-20 in the Fiesta Bowl.
The conference could once again have two teams finish in the top five. However, don't expect it to be the Nittany Lions and/or the Buckeyes, rather Michigan and Iowa should rebound from disappointing '05 campaigns, to seize control in 2006. ...............
Here is the Big Ten Preview with odds to win the BCS Championship, courtesy of [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

CarlE - If Cooper was so bad, why did Ohio State keep him for 13 years? I really would like to know.
You know he came very close to winning at least 2 national championshops but couldn't beat the schools from Michigan.
This is a classic, "A tie is one of our greates wins ever," OSU president Gordon Gee said. "You don't have to read between the lines to figure out this guy is doing a hell of a job."
Or just one point. It really doesn't matter to me. I'm just pretty sure of the outcome. Thanks in advance yet again, Lloyd. And W1, PLEASE don't talk about his winning record against the Buckeyes. Didn't you just answer your own question? It was the little dwarf in the bow tie that kept Coop around all those years. I think Coop went to his office everyday and tied his tie for him. In a cosummate show of appreciation Little Gee kept renewing his contract even though two schools from up north cost them two national championships. Ironic, Nick Saban was the coach at Michigan State when they beat the Buckeyes in '99, one of the two times that OSU was able to beat Michigan. I was at that game in Columbus.

Now Carle you can't put all the blame on E. Gordon. He was only there 8 years and Coop coached for 13 years. Ed Jennings, a cool guy whom I met, hired JC and William Kirwan followed Gee. I believe Kirwan was THE key person in Tressel getting the OSU job as he had remembered how impressed he and the University of Maryland AD had been when they interviewed JT for the job at Maryland.
Btw, do you know why Cooper got the OSU job? Simply (and stupidly) because he beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl a couple of months earlier!

M Fanitis FAQ - Symptoms and Solutions
By Tony Gerdeman
I was born in Northwest Ohio and even though I haven’t lived there for over a decade, I will always consider it my home. It is my love for the area that has caused me to bring the subject that I am about to discuss to the forefront. Northwest Ohio has given many great things to this country, mainly scales, Jamie Farr, corn and Ballreich’s potato chips. However, there is also a sad, sad, terrible contribution as well—Michigan fans.
Northwest Ohio Michigan fans are afflicted with a sickness known as “Michigan fanitis” or “M. fanitis” for short. M. fanitis has been around for decades, and even though it has been in decline in this century, we still have a long way to go to end this disease.................................

I don't think there's a defense in the Big Ten that has the speed to stop OSU's offense...
Michigan will give them a little trouble mainly because it's THE GAME (as far as college games go). But, IMO the only thing that stops OSU early in the season is getting in a track meet with someone (but who) and later a BCS quality, fast defense and good schemes that can give Smith trouble (and we are not speaking about the quality of defense ND put on the field in the Fiesta Bowl w/ receivers getting 20 yds beyond the cb's and a slow as your grandma safety).
I believe that Iowa will be the toughest Big Ten test but the The Buckeyes will win.

Michigan was 7-5 last year. That was their worst record since 1984. They have not had a losing season since 1967. They won the B10 Championship in 2003 and 2004.
Anyone who writes them off is simply wishful thinking. While those stats are about the past, doesn't history have a way of repeating itself?

warren1st,
I can assure you that Michigan will be a better team than last year. Last year's game against Ohio State to me...as much as I want to say it was an aberration, I have to admit (albeit reluctantly) that the Buckeyes were just better and more conditioned for the fourth quarter than the Wolverines were.
However, I still dispute there was no way Anthony Gonzalez could have made that catch on his shoulder that set up Pittman's game-winning touchdown run in their 25-21 win.
Michigan has to win this year, otherwise it will get to the point where Carr will hit a point of ignominy that it might be hard for him to recover from.

Come on, W1...you can't be happy with the way your program is going right now. I do think Michigan will be better than last year but they still have many, many questions. It seems to me that Michigan has lost it's identity. You could always count on them to have a stellar defense, ala '97. Well that is gone. You could also count on them to run the ball at any costs. Mike Hart is a good back but you really havn't seen those "Michigan Lines" of years past. It used to be that they had 2-3 NFL guys on the line each year. Even the passing game has suffered. Henne is good, but again, there used to be a top flight, NFL style passer every year. Not so much anymore.
There is a lot of negativity surrounding Michigan football right now and it's coming from your fan base. There are some alarming trends happening. Losing your road non-conference game...losing to Ohio State...losing the bowl game. If OSU beats you again, Michigan might reverse roles with Ohio State that existed during the Cooper years. You'll be thinking to yourself that you can't beat Ohio State even with superior teams.
I hate Michigan with every fiber of my soul. But I also respect them and understand that without Michigan there would be no Ohio State. Michigan needs to become Michigan again and quick, or else LLLLoyd will be gone and you guys might get that losing season that you dread.

I agree their D stinks the last couple of years. Their S&C is questioned by more than one NFL team.
However, Jim Herrmann is gone as DC thank goodness. My former doctor, an OSU alum, told me he always watched Michigan play because he was so impressed with their OL play. That has been sadly lacking the past few years.
UM in decline. I don't think so really. ND was in the doldrums for several years and now they are the darlings of college football again. However, if UM keeps losing to OSU and ND, both away games, it could hurt the program. Don't look for Lloyd to be fired as he has the NC in his back pocket and football isn't the only thing that UM is about.

I don't mean to get off topic but remeber last year? The sleeper team of the Big Ten ended up winning the Big Ten title. Penn State was the team nobody expected to be that good. Thus saying that I think Michigan State might finally get their heads out of their a$$ and have a defense that can help QB Drew Stanton win some ball games. Nick Saban went into the state job 11 years ago and rebuilt that program and now it needs rebuilt again. I think John L. Smith is not the right guy for this task.I mean honestly you can ask Hack the guy smiles too much. I think Michigan State needs to hire another coach and bring back some of the spartan pride.

W1...I'm not saying that the Michigan program is in decline, but it definitely is going through one of it's lower points. The problem, suprisingly, is in the recruiting. The 1st Michigan player selected in the NFL draft was Gabe Watson, who I believe went in the 3rd round. That is unheard of from UM. I believe the biggest reason for this is that they've been unable to develop a lot of the big Ohio recruits they've gotten and, more and more Ohio players are staying with OSU. Crable is the first guy who comes to mind. I think most people believe he would have made more of an impact to this point than he has.
This is in contrast to OSU where we've become a 1st round pick factory. For whatever reason, Ohio State is producing NFL players annually and kids are seeing that.
TigerCoach
07-26-2006, 10:11 AM
I don't think Michigan is in a decline either, but the Buckeyes have just dominated the recruiting over the last 5 years. That should pay off in another OSU victory in 2006! I see the Buckeyes being better than last year, mainly because of the maturation of Troy Smith, Ted Ginn, Antonio Pittman, Anthony Gonzalez and the addition of Chris Wells.
I'm just glad I'm not the defensive coordinator for the Wolverines! LOL!!

I was watching some tape today of a few of Bo's teams and Gary Moeller's. The staple Michigan trademarks were a great OL and strong defenses. Both have now become their weaknesses.
It will be interesting to see if the new OC and DC turn things around. If not Lloyd should probably move into the Athletic Department as, say, Assoc. AD.
We shall see. They have a wicked schedule. Penn St. has not beaten them in a decade but UM has to play there at night, and away games with ND and OSU.

Isn't that the truth!! I liked the good ole days when it was the Big 2 and Little 8 and Bo would beat teams by 40-50 points.
UM in the past 10 years NEVER wins easy. And, how about the Indians (well at least Wicky is gone) and Browns when they do win. Warren Harding, as most of you know, won many a game when all seemed lost.

Most of my smacktalk is not for you, GT87 or for W1. But if you would have heard how much woofin' that Keno was doing last year before and during the game, you would know exactly why I give him as much grief as I do. Most Ohio State and Michigan fans understand that neither program would be as good without the other. But there are certain factions of each fan base (and I personally believe that OSU has more) that get their rocks off by seeing the other one struggle, and will just needle and needle them all day long.
After hearing so much garbage from certain UM fans, especially during the Cooper years, nothing warms my heart like throwing it in the faces of those people. I can only imagine what some of those guys are thinking now. Ohio State has become everything they wish Michigan would be. This goes especially for the ones that were telling us how we were no longer their biggest rival. We had apparently been replaced by Notre Dame and Michigan St. That's fine, but now they have to get used to losing their final regular season game of the year. I'm sure that got old real quick.
