Dear Massillon and Leaders -

Hello my name is Brock James and im from Massillon Ohio . I have something to run by all the Massillonians. I am in the process of starting a Massillon Tiger hockey team. The team would be a new start in Massillon history and Massillon sports. I am in the middle of the fundraising, team building and meetings to get it all going . The team will be playing in the adult hockey league at the Center Ice Sports Complex located near the Canton/Akron airport. I will have a 16 person roster . We will have a full schedule and alot of opponents . Im trying to start something new and fresh . With so many sports Massillon has , they are missing something many other schools around here have , a Hockey team. My goal is to start this team and get alot of people behind the program. Hopefully in the future sparking the booster club and the school behind starting a team and playing teams from around here involved in the High School hockey league. Teams like toledo , cleveland heights , Jackson , Hoover. There is so much potential and its a new way to put the kids who dont play football and basketball etc. etc. and are good at something like hockey and teach them to work as a team . I will start fundraising and even proposing to the Massillon Parks and Rec. to maybe back this program here soon. Equipment and jerseys and practice time money is what we will need , then a website and just a little backing from the city etc. Massillon started football and look what it has become! Kids go to those games and wish one day they are out there playing hard and scoring . Well in hockey its the same thing ! You get offense , defense , full contact etc. Hopefully i start this program and start a Massillon Tiger Hockey team and spark something special for those that never could join a team. I played pee-wee and junior hockey at Center Ice and it was an exp. of a lifetime . Just watching the movie the Mighty Ducks as a kid inspired me to play and im sure it has done so for many others. Massillon needs a hockey team! To take down the Vikings and the Polar bears! Something those schools have been doing for awhile . To think also that there is a very good chance that being good enough , KSU or Akron has hockey teams too. I will be starting this program as an Adult League for right now and we will have jerseys and everything! Ive already got the ideas made up for everything. Just need to know what you all think and if i have anyone interested at all. I know i will get alot of critisism from people thinking heck no and we dont need a hockey team . But im doing this for the town and for the kids . Because alot of kids probably wonder why we dont have a team and Jackson and Hoover does. And their teams are good . But we are Massillon and we are always that much better!!!! Let me know your opinions or just all in favor say I!

Thanks for the support . As it will be a difficult thing . We will fill the roster by spring and start meetings etc. I want to represent Massillon in the best ways and get some support . Roster will be hard to fill finding all the players by spring . So we represent massillon to the fullest i will have rules and regs on players having to keep a clean backround , drugs , alchohol etc. As for the fundraisers i kinda in a bind to get things going , being so nasty out car washes etc are out of the question . If any ideas on fundraising to pay for Equipment and practice time on the ice let me know . Also if you know any way of getting support from the city or any of the boards etc. The schedule will be very difficult playing alot of teams that have been playing together awhile. All equipment and jerseys will total almost 2000 and practice times to be determined. We will most likely fill the roster and then start meeting practices to watch film of hockey games and actually play hockey video games to get used to rules and penalties as well as many visits to open skates to get skating skills up to standard. But i will be creating a website here soon www.massillontigerhockey.com . After the season and we get alot of support and help i will go to the school board and athletic board to pitch them a high school team idea and pass on all equipment and jerseys and hopefully help coach. Cant wait to see you all at the games. We are shooting for Summer or Fall/Winter to start the season. Jersey is already made just need funds to order . Check them out!

Lets take tiger pride county wide! Being in an adult league not only will we hopefully have support from the city , but hopefully support and respect from fans and supporters not associated with any other team.

All trophys and tournatment trophys will be donated to Massillon High School or Park and Rec!

Thanks so much!

Since fund-raising is so hard in the winter being so cold. I started an online fund-raiser to start up the process of getting equipment and practice time. Hopefully all who support make this possible can come see us in action this summer and winter as we support our orange in black. Myspace page is in process as a temporary site until we get the funds for our own website! I know not everyone reads or wants magazines but check out our first fundraiser!:thanx:

Here is our temporary website until funds are there to start a real good one http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=158278629. This is going to be great for Massillon . I was so upset when the plans to stop the process of the ice-rink downtown and starting a professional Massillon team. I was working so hard around that time to start a team that would play there. Now i have to do everything myself and get things going . But i will need your support. Many good things can come out of this. I mean just look at the Mighty Ducks movie , that team in the movie had such an impact and created such a big horizon of team work and doing anything you want to do no matter how bad it starts off and next thing you know they make a pro team named after them. I hope Tiger hockey gets big enough where theres merchandise and we are playing in major playoff games and championships and you all are there to support and where Tiger hockey apparel ! :gogogo:

Lets show them what we can do!!!!!!! If you put your mind to it , you can achieve anything!!!!

Any suggestions on how to get the community or get sponsors behind this , just let me know!

good luck in your efforts. i love hockey, and would love to see a massillon team (btw, i like the jersey).

for those out there who hate hockey, at least go to one game before you make up your mind. most people who say they hate hockey have never been to a game, which is unfortunate. hockey's one of those sports that's incredible to watch in person. it's a GREAT sport that requires an incredible amount of athletic ability. there's a lot of action and a lot of excitement.

well thanks for the idea ! i signed up with a fundraising company who is helping us send out flyers to buisnesses and family and friends so donations can be made. Also building a great donations site , very professional. Ill keep ya posted on that site. Our goal is 3000 dollars for everything we need to kick off the season!

I just got word the AHL accepts our team to play in Division 1. Where some of the best teams compete! Center Ice stated if we do good in our first season they will accept us to take us as their traveling team and Center Ice will be our home turf!

Make sure to follow up on all progress and the building of our roster.

Championship Game is also broadcasted on digital hockey station! So i hope me make it there!

Wish us look in our process to raise funds and kick butt!

I like the idea, but would be hesitant to suggest jumping right in and competing agaist some of the best teams in the area. Schools like Jackson, Hoover, etc. have been playing for several years and have a nice system going. I would suggest playing as a club team for a couple years to get kids more experience. As far as I know, there aren't many Massillon kids who have even been on ice skates, let alone played hockey. There was a great youth hockey program back in the 60's & 70's run by Frank Irwin, a local fireman. There was an outdoor rink at Resevoir Park (sp?) and everything.

Again, great idea, but I would hesitate to send the kids up against the wolves too early.

I agree with being hesitant . But my roster is full of exp. players. We are going to compete in this league to show massillon we need a hockey team. I know many kids have never been on ice skates. But we are going to show them that they are capable. By coming to our games and watching us and supporting us , we are going to try and get them into the game and take hockey classes and join junior leagues. We are already exp. as a team. We are trying to start hockey support across massillon , get kids at our games , get the community into it. And when we have succeeded we will then give our proposition for Massillon to join the high school hockey league. We will be playing teams with jackson and hoover hockey alumni . If we take them down , then we can show the community that we need massillon hockey. We arent saying lets just start a Massillon Hockey team. We are turning our team in to massillon tiger hockey to show the community massillon is just as good!

Well for my team we have been playing in leagues at canton/akron center ice since we were little. If im not mistaken theres plenty of kids at massillon right now who go to that rink and play or just skate. In fact when i was in high school i had a couple people in my class playing in the leagues. Does nooone understand that we are starting this team as adults , to play seasons and get the town behind it , and the younger kids. We are doing this to try and bring a new sport to massillon , something fresh ! I mean yeah we have football , but dont you realize theres more sports out there then just that.

For all the positive support i thank you

For all the negative support , i thank you for at least taking your time to read this . But maybe you need to reconsider how you feel , whats wrong with doing something good for the community , to start a new piece of history. I mean i understand if you just hate hockey or that you are just a football fan and are stuck on football and nothing else . But take a chill pill and open up . Ya know some people really hard to make something happen , a dream come true, you dont need to sit back and criticize that hard work!

Massillon isnt hockey??? thats like paul e brown back in the cold cold winters of his time starting a hockey team and it becoming a great historic figure in our town and then having football just forgotten about . Would you say Massillon isnt football if someone tryed to start a team

I'm not criticizing or being negative either. I think it's a great idea and I would support it. I'm under the impression that you want to start a HIGH SCHOOL hockey team. I didn't realize that you were talking about an adult league. That's why I was being so skeptical about "throwing the kids to the wolves".

massillon isn't baseball, wrestling, softball, golf, soccer, or swimming either, but we still have those teams and kids are able to participate.

lol yes it is an adult league , we will be playing in the AHL Adult hockey league. The point is to get the community behind it and get kids interested and then sooner or later proposing we start building a high school team. Ive talked with the director at center ice whom would take massillon in as a team and let the rink be their home ice rink and he wants to help later on get massillon a high school team! but yes i am starting an ADULT league team in order to get massillons name into the sport and then in hopes later on build the high school team

Love the jerseys.

Honestly can't see the high school supporting a hockey team, but you never know. It will take some time.

I would love to see Massillon get a lacrosse team, but I don't see that happening either.

There is also a feeder system to all the sports you just named. And there are 2 state runner up baseball teams who might argue that Massillon was partially part baseball at different times. I remember about 3,500 fans at the state title game in 1994.

unfortunately massillon has only really supported baseball during the times we've done well (although i wish there was more support EVERY year).

in your previous post you stated that "massillon is football," which, to me, implied that b/c massillon is a football town that either a hockey team wouldn't receive support or shouldn't receive support. i assume you meant that they wouldn't receive support. my point is that massillon is football.......period; however, even if massillon is a football town, there is no reason not to have a hockey team. we can still have sports like soccer, volleyball, golf, and hockey. granted, those sports don't draw as much support as they should, but they do provide different opportunities for kids.

i'd bet that if hockey comes to tigertown, a feeder system would follow (although i don'tk now how long it would take). i had a friend in high school who played in a league in the akron area. i'm sure if the sport develops in the county you'll see more leagues forming.
