MASSILLON One of the great players associated with football coaching legend Paul Brown is gone.
Tommy James, who helped Brown win championships with Massillon, Ohio State and the Cleveland Browns, died Wednesday night in the Doctors Campus of Affinity Medical Center. He was 83.
James played on a 10-0 Massillon team in 1940, helping Brown land the Ohio State head coaching job in 1941. James had five interceptions for the 1942 Ohio State team that won a national championship.
After serving in World War II, James. He spent most of his life, including recent decades, as a Massillon resident. He played for Paul Brown¹s Cleveland teams from 1948-55, an era when every Browns season ended in a league championship game. In 1950, the Browns¹ first year in the NFL after a run in a rivak league, James intercepted nine passes. It ws a club record that stood for many years.
James was inducted into the Browns¹ Legends club in 2004.

Now THIS is something we should be mourning. I A GREAT Tiger. I caddied for him at Brookside a couple of times when they all used to play Hall of Fame week. Gosh those were the good old days.

Very sad. A Tiger great that will be missed. I hope some of the players of today at least know who he was.

How sad. I knew the family very well when I lived in Massillon. I dated his youngest son for a few years and when he went off to college his parents hardly missed one of his games. Not only was Tommy a great football player but an even better father. They were very supportive of all of their children and grandchildren. I have wonderful memories of time spent with the James family, and they were really there for me during a very difficult time in my life when I lost my mother. I have the deepest respect for all of them. My heart goes out to the family.

Mr. James, You will never be forgotten. Thankyou for everything. You are and always will be a Tiger. On this day we remember you and Coach Studer. Take care of each other and we will see you when we reach the great endzone in the sky. God Bless you and your family.
