View Full Version : Massillon Football Mural Question
Just curious, who is the other team lined up against Massillon in the downtown mural.
Also, what is on the mural exactly?
It was brought up on another forum so Im just looking for some info. As always, thanks for the info.

I don't think it was made with a team to be "against"...but I could be wrong...It is cool it was my senior year that they took the drawing for the mural....

i believe the mural was done around 1994, the year of the 100th game. If anyone is identifiable, it would be the QB, whose #1 (and his size and build) reminds me of Willie Spencer, Jr. that year.
As for the opponent, I never did pay attention to their colors in the mural, but two clues suggest an obvious choice: The game is in daylight and there is a sellout crowd on hand. Let's just say it's not Cincinnati Western Hills! (However, the colors are not of the unmentionable team I'm thinking of and it looks like the full trees in the background make it seem like it's earlier in the season).

The opponent's uniforms remind me of the Army/Navy white.

I don't think it was supposed to be anyone specific. But you have to love the murals.

The mural was indeed done in 1994, and is modeled after the 1994 team so #1 is Willie Spencer Jr. As for the oposing team as someone told me before is Akron St V/St. M. As to why Mr. Grohe chose daylight hours only he knows. IM just glad it is well done and still looks good after 12yrs.

CarlE,
Good one! The highest Notre Dame was this past season was #2 and we know how THAT turned out: They got thumped, hit, outlasted, mashed, appalled, snapped, hung, eliminated, assaulted, ripped, nullified, smashed by the #2 team in the Big Ten!

i think if you notice downfield the receiver is #42 & the defender is# 41 ,,,,that was the final score.:

Interesting note, the Massillon quarterback has two right feet. Look at the angle of the lower legs and curvature of the feet (only I would notice such minutia!) Still, it is a fantastic mural in honor of our great football program! :weightlift:

Are you sure this was done in??? I thought it was later around 1997-1998, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the insight!

I guess that means that the "unmentioned" team's quarterback had the two "left" feet!!!http://www.intercot.com/discussion/images/smilies/yay.gif

I agree with Mass6, I don't think it was done until later in the 90's. If I recall correctly, he didn't finish the canal mural until late 1994.

if you look at the trees you'll see that it's early in the season, as the leaves have yet to change color. the trees are also casting long shadows, which suggests that the sun is hanging low in the sky (the sun is starting to set, which suggests it's evening). since it's early in the season the sun sets later in the day....hence it's still light out.
elementary, my dear watson.

it was in 1994-Mark Lightfoot Jr. (on right in front-you can see one 8 on him), Willie Spencer (QB), posed for some of the drawings..I remember they had our own lineman line up against Willie and drew them...it is incredible. Still after all this time-gosh was that so long ago. :sad2:

Three of my neighbor's kids are in the Massillon apartment mural-check out the window with the boy dropping the water balloon to the sidewalk! My neighbor said Eric had them pose differently for photos and then he painted from those.

Everyone's correct in some regard...conceptual work done using the 1994 team with the above mentioned players...mural itself is dated 1997.
At any rate, that mural is sweet and there isn't a time that I head west on Lincoln Way without taking a peek!

Ben Hymes ( sp?) was the model for both the Canal and Football murals.

It was completed in 1997- per the artists response to my question...
maybe he was the finishing touches QB (Ben Hymes)- but I was sure that the 1994 team, including Willie was the earliest models.

I thought it was done in 1997, because before practice a guy had Luke Schilling and Jason Bradley acting like the "tight end" blocking the "D-End" in the picture. They had to stand there for about 10 minutes, that was how I remembered. Ben Hymes also had to pose for quite some time.

arent those the colors of the old Warren Wester Reserve???? Perhaps its a flash back of the old AAFC with a little bit of a modern twist. (QB Willie Spencer #1).

Eric has a wonderful website to browse. Check out the projects and awards categories. I was unaware that he had won awards for 2 of the murals he did here. What a spectacular talent he is gifted with! Grooooovy stuff:coolgleam:

His work is OUT OF THIS WORLD...
Another neat artist is Julian Beever. This guy makes paintings (or is it chalk?) on pavement.
See his work here...
