I was wondering what the new field will look like or what you think it should look like such as returning Obie to mid-field and keeping the Tiger Stripe Endzones with Massillon in one and Tigers in the other or either or in both. Should a field cover be purchased to prolong the life of the field and what is gonna happen to the current one. Should it be cut up and auctioned off or moved to MMS? Your comments please and ideas.

I think whomever funds the project, should have the say on the 50 yard line. I will be surprised if field in the very near future don't have the AULTMAN logos at the twenty's ! :help:

H8tr, your correct on that. At one time in the recnt past we had Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse Logos there on home and visting sides of the field. I however like what what I mentioned I would like to see and know a field cover is badly needed and would have gave more longtivity to the past artificial surfaces. They seem to lose strength and mostly color due to not being covered when not in use. Most of your HS,College, and pro teams have field covers.

couldn't they just take the turf out of the stadium now and put it into DREAM to save some money?

A cheap way would be to sneak over to Fawcett, cut their turf out, and reconfigure and color it to our liking.

The paper said BOTH surfaces will mirror each other.

Sun is the worst thing for artificial turf. It always fried me that we could find money for turf, but never money for a tarp....or if we had a tarp, we didnt use it.

The technology on the Field Turf reportedly is better than that of prior surfaces. The fibers reportedly have UV protection to protect against the effects of weather. Most companies offer at least an eight year warranty and the surfaces reportedly last about 15-25 years.

I would like to see Obie at midfield and have the 'MASSILLON' and 'TIGERS' in the end zones minus the stripes...kind of like the sandturf the stadium once had before Massillon went to Astroturf in the second-year tenure of Massillon head coach/athletic director Rick Shepas.

it seems to me that field turf wouldn't lend itself to such a detailed image as obie being painted on it, because of the long fibers and all.

That turf will bring all the State Championship games back to Paul Brown, although I still think it will be a little crazy. That is the way of the future though! Think about it, we could computer generate each team in their respective endzones. Neat idea, thanks for the link ChronicTiger

Imagine what the swing band could do with that at half time? Or if bands of America comes back? question is... does it have problems at daylight?
Besides.. Warren would pout and wine that we made first downs longer for them anyhow.

My hope is that on redoing the turf we DON'T PUT OBIE BACK IN THE MIDDLE.

To be honest, I don't think it really matters how "Mean" our logo is. Obie is original to Massillon, no one else has it, unlike the Leaping Tiger that we have now. I think it should be up to the Administration and the people putting the $$ towards it, but being Mean enough should stand for our team and not our logo. Maybe that's why the Indians are so bad anymore, Chief Wahoo doesn't look mean enough. Just ribbin you TigerPride:laughing:

A leaping tiger would be fine but not that borrowed, copied, bought from someone else, weak, friendly looking, leaping tiger you are using as an avitar. Can anyone explain why we are copying the logo of a team from canada and PAYING for it? Is there some connection to someone on our staff? Its about the lamest thing I have ever seen. If people want a leaping tiger how about bringing back one we used in the past or have a student draw one. If you think that canadian tiger we have looks mean, your blind.

Based on the Repository article, the school was required to fund a turf replacement account when the current turf was put in place in the late 1990's. As a result, they have sufficient funds to pay for the new turf and thus are (or should be) 'the powers that be' in deciding what logos are incorporated on the turf and how the endzones look.
From what I understand, Fieldturf has vastly improved their coloring technology to the point where fading is no longer an issue. Given the fact that a majority of the NFL teams and many major NCAA programs use Fieldturf, I don't think we can go wrong with that as the playing surface. Check the link out to see their football installations. http://www.fieldturf.com/football/installations.cfm
Not to nitpick but wasn't the Obie caricature created sometime in the 1950's? If so, it wouldn't have been our logo 'since the beginning' (although it has been the logo from the beginning of my lifetime). Does anyone know the history of the Obie caricature? Maybe I should know that but I don't...

I know it wasn't there since the beginning, that is why I didn't say since the beginning, just that it was original to Massillon. You do bring up a good point though about finding out that history of Obie, thanks for asking the question!!

Back when Studer's was selling those Paul Brown envelopes, I also bought a small picture showing an aerial view of the stadium. I really like the way it looks with Obie on the fifty. Maybe they can make him a little BIGGER.If you've seen Massillon's basketball court,Obie is HUUUGE!! Massillon Tigers is in the orange end zones, and every five yards a different shade of green with white around the boarder. If someone can, and if they have an aerial view of both fields how about putting them up side-by-side for comparison. And, while they are redoing the field, how about widening the seats? As we get older our bodies get wider, the seats don't. Might lose a few seats, but that won't matter because they will be added when they horseshoe the north end zone. :gotigers:

bowling in th north endzone will never happen. Its bad enough they wanna move the locker rooms out of the stadium. This is breaking away from tradition and this greatly angers me. Im starting to dislike the whole project. If this involves drastically changing the look of the stadium and removing the locker rooms out of the stadium then Mr. David can put his gift somewhere. Im tired of them breaking away from tradition and getting away from how things have always been done here like attempting to join the federal leauge when we have always been independant. But back to topic im sure the field will be beautiful and have an Obie at mid-field if requested.

Have you read the article, or looked at the pictures? The new locker rooms appear to be in the stadium. The Repository showed them to be built to the south side of the west side stands in that parking lot west of the scoreboard. From what I can tell the locker room is not part of the indoor facility next to the school, but in the stadium itself (hence the reference that they make to the second floor of the lockerroom facility being classrooms located inside of PBTS)

As a public service announcement (more specifically to you Mr. David and the David family) the views and opinions of MTigers006 do not represent the opinions of the Massillon public as a whole and those that consider themselves supporters of the football program and certainly not those that consider themselves supporters of the school system. You see, most of us get the 'education' part of 'school system' and we are also proud of the fact that our athletics and specifically our football program has garnered national attention for many decades. We are grateful that you have also recognized the need to provide opportunities to our kids that they may not otherwise have. We also are grateful that you have chosen to support the ATHLETICS program (note we did not say just the football program) by building an indoor facility that will be made available to all students. We understand that we are not privy to every detail and trade off that needed to be considered when determining where to place these facilities and we trust your judgment as a BORN AND RAISED GRADUATE OF MASSILLON HIGH SCHOOL, MEMBER OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM AND LATER A POSITION COACH OF SAID FOOTBALL TEAM. We are confident that you will have the best interests in mind for the school, the students and the football program with respect to keeping as many traditions as possible. Oh wait....your father was a close friend of Coach Paul Brown. I suppose you ARE aware of what those traditions are. Forgive me for that oversight.
Nonetheless, thank you once again for the GIFT and we will do our best to embrace it and show our deepest appreciation. Afterall, it's our kids that will ultimately benefit from it!!
Dear MTigers006 - grow up and take a look at the bigger picture before :sad2: about turf colors, placement of the locker room, yada, yada, yada. Better yet, since it sounds like renovations to the stadium may be needed in the next several years why don't YOU tell us what SPECIFICALLY you would do to improve the stadium while keeping all of the traditions that you mention. Keep in mind that we don't sell out all seats but once or twice a year, the stadium is not currently up to ADA standards, OHSAA is not thrilled with the current press box, there is a significant sewer line that runs underneath the middle of the field, the restrooms are severely outdated as is the vending area, and cost IS an issue. Have at it. Wait, let me guess. You don't think anything needs to be done to the stadium...

I would think that it is also an insult to those who have taken it upon themselves to make this vision a reality, to assume that they have not taken the whole picture into consideration and will do what is most practical and feasible in the planning of this huge project.

I think we NEED the switch to field turf for more than a status/field condition purpose....
Last year. We were
1-0 on Grass.
6-1 on Regular Turf.
0-4 on Field Turf.
Another factoid...
We are 0-2 at fawcett since they installed field turf
The only stadium we have a winning record on field turf is the Rubber Hole.
So that says one of 2 things...
We have trouble with field turf because we are too used to our own turf.
or else we just can't compete on field turf... the second is just not likely.
I think the turf will be very very helpful to us.

... Tradition is what makes Massillon ....
Yes... please keep in mind, there must be a balance between "keeping tradition" and having a football program that has the lastest and most advanced equipment & training facility available. Massillon was the FIRST public school in Ohio (1974) to get Nautilus weight-lifting equipment (Moe & Ed were the only other schools to have Nautilus machines at that time.) Massillon was among the first to have the "Air" helmets. Should we give-up having these "firsts" in modern advances just for the sake of TRADITION?
I'll not insult anyone (006) by asking if we should go back to leather helmets in order to maintain TRADITION. :blush2:
In all honesty, I don't like the idea of moving our "HOME" locker room because of the heritage & tradition thing... but I know it will be even better to see a new, larger, and modern locker room for our boys in the years to come.

You would call whitmer the better team?
I am not blaming the turf, but I do think having the field turf at home and for practice will have us more used to it when we play on it, and considering last year we played 4 games on field turf, and next year we will play 3, and probably 4 if the Herbie is at fawcett, of our away games on field turf. With PBTS getting field turf, it is very likely that every game we play next year will be on field turf.
P.S. Field turf has also been proven to be less injury prone than our turf.

i like that idea, in the endzone on each sideline you could put an obie,
so it would look kinda like this
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"insert pic of obie" Massillon"insert pic of obie"

Born Massillon, went to college in Cincy yes...
I felt so dirty wearing red and black, especially when I KNEW while sitting in red and black in nippert that Massillon was playing Mckinley at that time.
(BTW, I had to run laps every Monday morning for wearing a bright orange shirt under my Marching Band uniform, although I told Dr. Frenz I would be wearing it again the next week, and he would always say "I know, you are from Massillon, I don't expect you not too, but you still have to run 10 laps before practice")
BTW, the only other person from Massillon while I was in U.C. Bearcat Bands was Jamie Bradfield, she was a majorette... I have no idea if she wore orange under her uniform or not, although I don't remember her running laps.

Big Obie in the middle of the field, yes bigger then the last time and Block "M" at the 30 or 25 yard marks. Plain Orange Endzones with the Massillon and Tigers in the endzones. And does anyone know if we still have the contract for the "leaping"tiger on the helmets anymore??? If it isn't up does anyone know when it is??

Can anyone here make computer images of the different redintions of the way the stadium would look like as we described in this thread? It would be nice to see how some of these would look.

Mass6,
Oh my gosh! I liked the plain orange end zones with the 'MASSILLON' and the 'TIGERS' there!
Oh, and gotigers1...every time I see that pic of the 1999 field, I think about all the time what it meant to be in the Luther Emery Press Facility on Friday nights (and some Saturdays)! I tell you this: press row is NEVER empty on Fridays with various sportswriters from other locations coming to check out the action! And I can truly attest to that!! And I give props to the Massillon press box officials for a phenomenal job during the season!

A few years ago, I bought my wife a white Massillon jacket. On the back it has a big block M (plaided) with Obie on the lower right part of the M. It has Massillon on the top and Tigers on the bottom. After all these years and just found out that, Tigers is off center :furious:. I know that a lot of people got one of these, can some one post it? They do look nice.

New surface will be field turf. It will have a rubber sand mix to enable the blades of turf to stand up. This will give the field the appearance of being a real grass field. The field will also be simple and will not have much in any of the end zones. It will have the appearance of an old style field and resemble what Paul Brown would like it to be. Green field with white lines! It will be awesome when done and reflect our tradition and not commercialism.

Banks, NO TIGER STRIPES, probably white letters with Massillon in one end zone and Tigers in the other.

What a shame, I would pretty much like the field artificial surface with obie in the middle. Both orange and Tiger Stripe endzones are cool. A little color and detail never hurt anyone. The current field going to the middle school I think would be a great idea though. It's got a few good years left in it.

I hope that doesn't mean that there will not be any type of emblem at all in the middle of the field.

Who wants a generic field like Fawcett has with all their tenants over there?
MTigers006
02-27-2007, 02:04 PM
Certainly not us TigerVic. Paul Brown Tiger Stadium is a symbol of strength, pride, excellence, and tradition. It is a symbol of who we are. It is a top quality facility and should appear as so. Thats why only the best should always be when it comes to upgrades of what I concider the greatest stadium in high school football. Though feet warmers would be nice for during the cold months like some NFL stadiums have.

I understand your points but don't look a "gift horse in the mouth." The Tigers could be one of thousands of teams across the country playing on worn grass fields in front of a few fans watching on portable metal bleachers. We're very lucky.

there is no gift about it. We are paying for it. Well its being by for by Tiger Fan's hard earned money. We deserve to speak our minds and what we would like to see.

MTigers006-I disagree with you on this. Ticket prices for Tiger games are not drastically different from those of other school districts in the area. Just because the district had the foresight to set aside some of the money generated for the turf doesn't give us much reason to complain. I'm sure suggestions are welcomed. But we shouldn't complain.
