Andrew daily gained 12 lbs. in a month. As long as they are doing it safe along with all the other training aides available it cannot do anything but help our team strength. Team speed on the interior is what i am worried about--if we handle that we have a good chance.

As I was working out at the Rec. today, the thought of powerlifting came to mind. It consist of just three movements, the bench press, the deadlift, and the squat. Done right and with enough weight, you can get a superior workout with the most muscle and strength gain. Those three movements use every muscle in your body. I use to powerlift. Squating made my butt tooooo big. I got bigger and stronger, but at my age my joints started hurting too much. Some times I want to try it again. Being 50, I always think twice about it.:weightlift:

Don't forget about the Power Clean! No other movement imitates the form of uncoiling on a tackle or drive block like the clean. I agree with the rest of your comments.
The power lifting part is excellent as long as you keep up on plyos, nutrition, etc. The line I saw last year could have held the world record for any three of those lifts but still wouldn't have been able to block anybody because they couldn't MOVE.

What did Moronto do to get those boys big? I say use Mo's strength training to get our boys strong, then use Shep's speed training to get them fast. Half of each should do the trick.

i think we are putting too much emphasis on strength. we need guys to be able to move. the strength program that was used under shepas was great. everyone seemed to get stronger and much faster.

It seems pretty obvious judging from the last 3 posts, and I agree also. Its about speed & strength - in that order.
About the powerlifting team...I went to several meets. They were awesome. Under Rose, we had multiple champs and were #1 in the state. But in football we were also some of the slowest least agile Massillon teams I had seen in years. It was not a popular decision but Shep took one look and scrapped it.
And someone please tell me WHY ON EARTH did we scrap the West Virginia speed/strength program that all the coaches raved about? Right away we go all the way to the state title game, promptly get rid of it, then last year right back to one of Rose's slow*** teams again. Was it because it was Shep's idea? I wonder.

Coach Moronto preached bigger, faster, stronger, and unbeatable (it didn't start paying off until 88 because we had TEAM SPEED) but it was Coach Stu who developed the formula for the workouts. I know that Stu's book is available or in someone's hands. How can you change 20 years of tiger strength training in 2 years. Tiger teams have traditionally been strong but I have never seen a tiger team show such TEAM speed then in 2005 from the WV conditioning program. It was not that 2005 team was that much more talented then 2006 or past teams but they could go 4 quarters and 4 Ot's if needed but this years team was slow up front and could not finish games in the 2nd half against top tier teams. EVERYONE LOST A STEP in 2006????? How that happened is really unbelievable!!

to tiger 51 yes we do have a power lifting team we may only have 2 meets this year but it is a legit lifting team

i believe that the 2002 team that lost in the semi-finals could match the 2005 team step for step. it's beyond me why the staff scrapped the program. last year's team looked at least 2 steps slower as a whole the the 05' or 02' team.

power lifting is good for the kids if it is done right. And from what I have witnessed in the weight room it is. You can include speed and strength in one workout. The stretch bands and flexing they are doing are balanced with the power lifts. We need this for the athletes that are doing nothing ( other sport) in the off season. Gives them goals and increases athletic ability.

While the fundraiser portion of the lift-a-thon will begin shortly, the public exhibition will not occur until late May. Due to the configuration and physical size of the new weight stations purchased last summer, holding a traditional lift-a-thon exhibition in the gymnasium has become impractical. The exhibition to the public will either be held inside the stadium, or if there is no field inside the stadium at the time of the event, the athletic facility to the east of 20th street SE. The public exhibition and will include speed, agility and other testing.
GO TIGERS!

I really hope that they don't try to have it inside the stadium again. Last year was pretty much a bust with the weather.

completely agree with you about that...I like the concept but honestly if you want people to come you have to keep them entertained and that just wasn't....didn't know who people were and honestly it was just to overwhelming with so many things going on at once....but I like the concept...but something different has to happen.....and besides that time of year is so hard to predict the weather...Again, I just think of "lift a thon" and I think guys lifting and getting after it and Walt announcing and it having action but not all over the place....but again, times change....GL to all the participants....have fun

I am just wondering if by any chance you are confusing alex with shaun(sp) Butler? I know that he won some type of award for best lifter or w/e on the football team this past year.
