Xtiger,

So what is little Xtiger going to do Tuesday morning? Go sled-riding? I know he'll have a good time along with everyone else on Lincoln Way East, #1 street in Massillon!

No sledding for him, it's too dang cold. He'll probably have a couple of his buddies over and play Air Hockey or NCAA 2007.

OSU main campus never closes- Well, it did for 1 day in 2003, 1994, and in 1978 (don't know about before that). Occasionally, night classes have been called off.

I can recall some frigid days going to classes- such as the day after the '82 AFC title game (Bengals-Chargers) when it was -17 with a windchill of -50.

I think OSU would close half day for a nuclear war.

That's because tractors can get around in the snow and you guys are used to the cold from the barns!! LOL

Look’s like it’s going to be another “3 Dog Night” tonight…..

It’s really good that they don’t make the kids go out in this early in the morning.

Wish I could be off tomorrow too….don’t want to stick my nose out that door either.

When I first read your post, Keno, I thought you were suggesting that xtiger's kid go sled riding down Lincoln Way...lol

In any case, it's too cold to sled ride. All my kids stayed inside. MY daughters went to friend's houses and my son had a friend over and they played Playstation. It was nice having them home, though. I made a fire in the fireplace and made everyone hot chocolate.

It is terrible that they won't close here at OSU. In high school you are inside all day. Here you have to walk from building to building, sometimes 8-15 minutue walks.

Welcome to real life son. We don't get to stay home from work because it's too cold.

When is the last time you walked to work with -15 degree wind chills?

That would have been through wind tunnels in both downtown Boston and downtown Chicago from the parking garages. Now, any more questions for me?

It wasn't so bad at OSU today. It was a nice sunny day.

I'd bet not as many would complain if the Michigan game was today! School or not, the Show would be filled!

We elderly rank-and-file ham-n-eggers weren't so bad off, even if we did have to stroll from building to building.

Every now and then I tell my students that the busses are lining up outside to take us home early. Everytime, one or more of my students will look out the window! I think most of them are from Canton.

Hey Vic-

I remember when OSU closed in '03 right around this time of the year...REALLY bad storm. Took me 5 hours to drive from Massillon to my place off 315. When I got on 270 and saw emergency vehicles spinning off the road, I knew things were bad. Then we had to put up with the 10TV talking heads spouting about snow warriors for the next 3 weeks.

The father of one of my roommates worked for Volvo back then, and we had one of the first XC90's on US soil in our possession for the day. We put it through its paces on our day off, and luckily got it back to him in one piece.

Ah Yes- 10TV. I've never seen any other station or network tout themselves as being the savior of the TV news world as much as this outfit- consistently - dating back to at least the late '70s. Now that they invented ONN, they have found new ways to tell you that your life is not complete without 10TV! Aren't we wonderful!

The kings of school closings: You listen to us and, before you get to hear your school closings, we'll tell you how great we are at giving you school closings! I'm thankful for the internet that we don't have to rely on the broadcast news anymore.

That was a bad storm in '03! Not as bad as '78, but it ranks up there!

What is the rationale for closing the schools?

What is the rationale for closing the schools?

Generally speaking, snow is not a primary reason for closing school. As long as roads are not drifting shut, most schools stay open even with sizable snowfalls.

They usually look at wind chill and air temperature (also road conditions) when making a decision relating to cold weather. Of course, this IS Ohio, so below 0 degree weather is not uncommon. In most situations, if air temperature is 0 degrees to -10 degrees with a little or moderate wind chill, a lot of districts will likely have school, although some choose their cutoff range at higher than -10 degrees. Air temperature of -20 degrees or below (regardless of wind chill) will cause them to cancel school. If temperatures are between -11 degrees to -19 degrees and there is also a significantly low wind chill temperature, most districts will close.

The reasons most schools were closed yesterday and are closed today is because in the Akron/Canton area, the air temperature is around -10 degrees and the wind chill is expected to get to -25 to -30 degrees tomorrow.

I'm assuming it's because of the wind chill.

There was some talk on one of the Cleveland stations about schools being required to submit a "pupil head count" to the state this week and that the week wouldn't count because the schools have been closed. I didn't hear the entire conversation because I arrived at my destination but I would like to hear more if anyone has the info.

Although my kids get driven to school and we do not go out fo r recess if it is below 32 degrees outside...I agree fully with closing the schools. It is too cold for those kids to stand out at the bus stops or to walk to school. I heard somewhere that if you are outside in 20 below temperatures that exposed skin freezes in about 3- 4 minutes....sounds like a good reason to keep our kids home.

CarlE- my horse drawn carriage does goes well in the snow, but since they made us put taillights on it we've bought a tractor...it runs great...and matches our JOHN DEERE green BARN....

Think we'll actually get any of that snow?

Kids need to go sled riding around here!

The National Weather Service says 7-14 inches are possible. I know the weather guys love to hype this stuff, but it sounds legit. The snow will mix with sleet south of I-76 on Tuesday afternoon, which may reduce SOME of the accumulation.

I'm still waiting to see some major snow. It's 1:34 AM right now and all we have at our house is a really light snowfall. I think my kids are going to be disappointed in the morning when they have to go to school.

longtimefirsttime

It's coming from the south and should get here sometime during morning rush. It will put administrators in a bind because it will not give them much, if any, time to cancel classes. I wouldn't be surprised if classes are let out early if they're not cancelled in the morning. It's coming. Counties in Southern Ohio already have snow emergencies in place.

We'll all be going in 2 hours later.

Think we'll be getting out earlier too?

longtimefirsttime

It's possible if it would snow hard enough. But then what would be the point of going at all (if it started late and got out early)? I'm sure we'll get plenty of storm coverage in Wednesday or Thursday's Independent.

Let me tell you, I tried to venture out in this mess today, and with my little car, I probably spun out 4 times between my house and Fulton. I figured I'd cut my losses, and come home, wait it out, and maybe venture in to work late. UGH. What a mess. I woke up at 5:10, and nothing. I went to leave at 6, and the roads were almost undrivable.

If you have to go out, be very careful folks. It's likely to only get worse.

This is REALLY hurting the musical practices!

"Anything Goes" will be performed starting next Thursday evening!

Um, I believe the safety and well-being of the students outweighs the importance of musical practices. Well, at least in my mind it does.

Between the lighter than normal traffic, and hitting most of the lights just right, my drive in only took a couple minutes longer than usual. Not sure it will be that way on the ride home.
