WOW is right this makes me so happy to be a tiger!!!! :tig: that design looks so awesome. I have a question are we going to be able to have the tiger thats on the front of the design? because I thought we only could use it for 2 years. not trying to be a pooper just wondering. the programs they are talking about sound like it could help some students in there goal to go to college. this is just great we need things like this to help are students better there lives.

This is unbelieveable......so impressive. Now, I'd like to see a drawing of what the state of the art locker room facility will look like. I've heard it's going to be 3 stories high, with team dressing on first floor, meeting rooms on second floor , and audio-visual rooms on 3rd floor. It's going to be built where the visiting locker room is now....I've heard in 08 that our team will come of that end zone area instead of where we have traditionally come out of....I think it makes sense...that's where the band is, fireworks area, scoreboard end. The visitors will take over the Massillon locker room now. I'm sure some old fogies will bit** about tradition and not wanting to change.........for once, let's all agree this will the best thing to happen in years.

I have a question are we going to be able to have the tiger thats on the front of the design? because I thought we only could use it for 2 years.

I think this is wonderful. It will be the jewel of the country as far as HS football is concerned (not that PBTS already wasn't!). It might somewhat rival the Woody Hayes facility at OSU!

I, too, am concerned about the leaping tiger, but not only from a legal point of view. It's not my money, but Obie seems to be more appropriate and representative of Massillon through the years!

I am sure the Leaping Tiger is in there for show right now, unless the TigerCats gave us permission to use it for this project. I know you would all like to see obie, but which one do you use? This is going to be used for all sports.

Ok, I am waiting to be flamed.... :obiefanfire:

Its simple isn't it?

They use the OBIE with the Cap,Scroll and Books

CATS44
02-02-2007, 03:57 PM
I, too, would rather see Obie...but thats nit picking on my part.

When you take into account the total package, there is something that I think I see that I sincerely HOPE our town and administration will work very hard at.

The academic part is aimed at health care related education...both two year and four year college plans. A majority of people in those types of careers are female. This plan, once in place, should attract female students from the surrounding areas. From an athletic point of view, I would hope that we would now begin to emphasize the girls sports, and place the same amount of expectations, commitment, and assets into the girls sports as we do the boys sports.

There is no reason that girls sports should take a secondary position in our school system...and there is no reason that our girls basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, and track teams shouldnt be among the best in the County.

And I hope we bring in an AD who thinks the same way as I do. We are now certainly going to have the facilities to match anybody.

I believe the estimated cost to maintain was about 150k a year which would
possibly include staffing..Hopefully the administration can get creative on
ways to generate revenue, such as renting the use of the facility to some
area schools, teams in the State Championship games may want to practice inside,$$, baseball camps in the winter months, how about a combine like Shepas had a few years ago..ect.

Congrats to Massillon for your new facilities. Actually though here in Fremont we rebuilt our football stadium, built a new swimming/wrestling/classroom complex, built a new tennis complex, and built a new baseball complex all with no taxpayer dollars. Over $10,000,000.00 worth of facilities. So while you have every right to be proud about your new facilities, it does happen elsewhere too.:

The Fremont Area Athletic Foundation worked hard to raise the funds. They tapped a nationwide base of Ross alums and also worked the business community as well. They started slow but once the group got going the projects just took off. The group knew the voters would never approve such a project so they took it upon themselves to get it done.

I think a certain former strength and conditioning coach who is looking down on us would be thrilled with this. Coach Stu would get a big kick out of it. It would also give a nice alternative to the gym for rained out Commencement Ceremonies. I also would like to see Stadium Park turned over to the school district as once discussed by school and city officals at which seemed to have disappeared from the table. This land will be needed for future development. One question also there will come a day when the natatorium at old WHS will need replaced. This was to be originally done when the new WHS was built which was decided it would be built at a latter time. This never got done and it was supposed to go where this facility is proposed to go. Where will it go now if need in the future and what about practicing on natural grass for a upcomming game where they still have a natural surface? I know the band would also appreciate this facility for practicing as well. Im happy about it and thankful. This is something that has been needed for a long time. A former tiger Tuffy Woods says he disappointed this wasnt around in his playing days. lol. This is an investment that will pay for itself in years to come. My only concern is I sure hope they arent gonna replace the home locker rooms. There is alot of ,History, tradition, and memories in that room. Three things that lately dont carry significant meaning anymore in this town.(i.e. Lincoln Theatre, Longfellow, Lorin Andrews,Old WHS, half of downtown.etc) As I mentioned before I hope nothing is drastically changed up at the stadium. Im surprised it wasn't propsed to be demolished and rebuilt. Im not in favor of moving the locker rooms out of the stadium. One thing I think would be a great idea however is sound and monitors in the concourse of the stadium so someone getting a snack or a keepsake can ke3ep tabs of what is going on on the field at all times. This system is currently used in only certain parts of the stadium such as concessions and the box office. I would rebrick the exterior as seen on previous "Walk of Pride" blueprints and drawings which never came to full fruitation. Two last details I would suggest is to make Obie and the name of the stadium backlit as to highlighted with spot lights and most of all bring back the championship banners. We must remember and be proud of our past as we look towards the future. That future that looks bright in Massillon Ohio, The City of Champions.

This is my editorial and sole opinion on this matter and would like to hear your input.

***This is my soapbox speech, not directed to anyone specific, just a general observation***

Should we bring back the championship banners??

ABSOLUTELY!! We need to see those baners hanging from the rafters on the home side. I have been waiting to see them come back for too many years!

Anyone who has ever worn the orange and black should feel some sort of connection to the past. We have the team pictures in the locker rooms. We have all seen the panoramics of the championship teams from the 30's and 40's. Heck, I even have a panoramic of the 1939 team hanging right above my own team pictures at home.

I remember playing on that field and looking up to see the championship banners waving in the wind, drawing some sort of spiritual connection to the players before me. We all have our struggles and disagreements on how things should be done and what should be done by the players, coaches and admin, but the banners are something that hurts no one and hopefully will positively affect former, current and future players.

Bottom line, it is up to us to uphold and keep the tradition of Massillon football and pass it on to the future generations. Do you get rid of your Tiger Football shirts if they barely break .500 for the year? Do we not put up the banners because it has been over 30 years since a state championship? There is too much negativity as of late (workouts, performance of players last year, choice of uniforms, design of the new field turf).

Do you know why Tiger Football was better when you played? Because it was YOU...YOUR experiences...YOUR key blocks...YOUR touchdown run. I'm not saying to minimize what former players have experienced, but do not beat the kids down for being out there. They are trying to make their experiences the best. We have a tough role. We have to allow these kids to make their own memories. BUT...if we don't provide a connection with the past, how will they know where the program has been and how to measure themselves with the past teams?

I tell you what...my 4 yr old daughter loves going to the games (for 2 years now) and my 2 year old son can already recognize Paul Brown (and say his name) from a team photo. They can recognize pics of me in my uniform even though I look vastly different now. She loves to wear her #55 orange Stu t-shirt and you can bet that my son will know who Stu was and what he was about. They will know about George "Red" Bird. They will know who Ducky Schroeder was. I can also guarentee that my brother is doing the same with his children.

It is more than just the football team. It is about everything on a fall Friday night. It all ties together eventually. This new complex will hopefully make everyone aware of some portion of our history (by the name on the front) and give us one more thing to brag about.

Whew...Didn't mean for this to be a rambling post, but just wanted to get some thoughts out.

Thanks Kamd50 and OTC. I would really like to see the traditional banners. Remember them? It wasn't the Obie in the middle, but more of a walking/leaping tiger (more old school, vintage). What about adding regional champ banners from the last couple of decades? I have seen alot of chatter about the amount of regional championships lately compared to other schools, but I was (and remain) focused on the state champ. Just my personal opinion.

That's a really strange idea.

The cheerleaders spend most of their time in front of the student section, don't they?

We already have trouble getting the kids to come to the games to support their team, and you want to give them second class seating?

Plus, as I understand it, we moved the band away from the student section because the students kept throwing food at the band, and staining their uniforms.

Are you serious? Yes attendance is down from the peak steel town days. However attendance averaged over 10-thousand per home date last year for a city of around 32-thousand. People tailgate hours before kickoff. Ask the officials, opposing fans and players if they think we're rabid. They'll tell you.

And I'm really done commenting about that aspect on this thread. It was designed to be positive.
