I would like to get some opinions of the best tiger ATHLETE(all sports) in the past 25 years male or female. This topic could get heated and alot of differant answers and opinions about players--Spielman(9 varsity letters), BG(6)??, Travis McGuire(All american in football and district tennis qualifier), Christain Morgan(9 or 10 Varsity letters),etc,.... the list could go on and on!! Let's get the tiger nations opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please vote for a male and female athlete
My votes:
Both from the class of 1988
Male: Jerome Myricks-- 10 Varsity Letters in football, bball, and track
Female: Kelly Bodiford--9 Varsity Letters in volleyball. bball, and track
Hon Mention:
Male:2002 Shawn Crable had 11 Varsity letters in football, bball, and track tied 100 meter record (but he is my cousin and I would not want to be biased!!!
Female:1988 Chi Chi Crenshaw-- 9 varsity letters and teammate of Bodiford--best one/two punch we ever had in female sports I know of. That bball team of Sissy Hooton, Tottie Porrini, and Kristi Fabianich was real special my junior year!!!
ITS THE OFF SEASON AND WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING!!!!!

Are we basing this poll on the number of varsity letters won? Or, the impact they had as a Tiger only?
If your talking overall careers, I'd also throw out Willie Spencer, who went from WHS to the CFL and eventually the NFL. Also, Tom Hannon, who went to Michigan State and played in the NFL for 10-12 years. Also, don't forget Dennis Franklin, runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1974 (?). Chris Spielman has to be in the running also.

kreg rhothoff had to have won at least 6 varsity letters im not sure though but i do know he was a good swimmer for 4 years and also started on varsity football at center for 2 years
I thought Tom Hannon's NFL career was 8 years with Minnesota (1977-1984). However I don't remember whether he played for any other NFL teams.

This thread is both interesting and sort of sucks.. Interesting because, well it is... sucks because these guys names your throwing around, Spielman, Myricks, Travis etc, well it doesn't seem possible they played that long ago and I'm really feeling old right now. Really though it is fun to talk about it.. One thing for sure there has been a ton of big time talent..... Being a lifetime out of towner I really only saw these guys on the football field so I'm not going to vote... Did that one McGuire kid play other sports? The son of the loving Tonja and dignified Paul Turner...Justin is already making a big name in Massillon. He has the record for most touchdowns scored as a freshman and is already a crowd-pleaser in basketball.
Also, owning a 3.3 grade-point average in the classroom...he's making a case for most talented. Add in that he has a strong family supporting him, there is no limit to what he can do!
*Half of his 32 touchdowns in his career are from 50 or more yards!

01-20-2007, 05:21 PM
I am being very serious here.....when you talk about the best athlete to come out of Massillon in the past 25 years....how can you even dare throw in the name of a kid who is only a sophmore? I am not taking away that the kid has a chance to be very special...but come on. As of this date, you can not put him in the same league as some of the guys from Massillon their senior years. And if you truly believe you can then you might as well go spit in those guys' faces, the guys and girls that were All-Americans. I'm not being mean but lets please be realistic here.

NO offense, but come on Keno. Your really keeping track of what the kid did at the freshman and jr. high levels? Kid is has a chance to be great, but let's throw in "career" numbers on a kid who is just a sophmore and those records date back to jr. high.

Funny LIFT---- I was just a average linebacker that played a little college ball but I did average 20+ in junior high and dressed varsity in bball my soph year but didn't play jr. or sr. year because of that football thing!! I really didnt have much talent in any other sports! My brother played Tennis and Golf in high school---I could never play either!!!!
Keno-- I agree with Cracker that JT has great potential but this is not a thread for him until he puts up those numbers on the varsity level. The players mentioned in this thread have been beasts from midget league to college!! Jerome averaged 3 TD's a game and 25 points a game in bball while at Longfellow and started in EVERY VARSITY game his whole career--both ways as a soph in football playing several positions---RB, FS, Corner, WR, and Flanker--you are to young to remember the famous #1---best athlete I ever suited up with or against in my life and I have played against NFL and NBA players! Top 10 in scoring(bball) and rushing in his career!!!! Putting him in with Spielman and all the other greats right now is real crazy but flattering for a young player!!
Oh-- JT's uncle Darrayl Turner was the Stark County leading scorer 3 years in a row--- best stroke on a jump shot I know. He still can be found at Shriver park in the summer draining threes! He has not surpassed his father or uncle in achievemants in high school yet!!!

True-- many plyaers that were excellant athletes just played the sport to get them a deal--I was better than average in bball but a 6'2" center doesn't cut it in college at ANY level and stopped running track also after soph year---Coach Stu's workout program was needed to strenghten my bad shoulder.
Chronictiger--- can you critic my bball skills for me please???????

I bet nobody will remember these two. If not for their being academically challenged and probably hard to coach, everyone would be mentioning them. Kenny, aka BooBoo, at about 210 lbs, was talked into wrestling for the 1st time at WHS and went to the state heavyweight final 3 years in a row, only to lose to a 300+ pound three-time champion by 1 or two points each time. It was incredible! He was absolutely scary on the football field too as a defensive takle in the one year he was talked into playing. Tommy once hit a baseball over the railroad tracks at the bottoms field when he was 13. He was the only person I ever saw hit a SOFTBALL over the old Agathon fence. If he would have stayed out of trouble, Bill Harmon would have been second-string or blocking for Tommy. I know these two don't exactly meet the criteria of greatest WHS athletes, but they had the greatest potential I ever saw. Brent Offenbecher was a three sport letterman. He probably still holds the pole vault record.
The mid-70's basketball player someone mentioned had to be Michael Swann.

Those so called "sissy's" from the Spicer Poet side of Massillon turned out pretty well. Mike lead Tigers in tackles his Sr. year went on scholarship to YSU. He was picked as player of the 80's for the program done in 1991. Brian played sparingly in high school football because of a sholder injury, dominated the baseball field and was all over in centerfield. By far was the fastest (beat craig johnson in race before baseball practice once) his senior year, qaulified for state in wrestling and on top of that went to WEST POINT! And was voted MVP of the Army/ Navy game his senior year. Bruce set many records as a WR and went to YSU also to play for Tessel and has a DI AA Championship Ring! Played basketball and baseball also. Kevin played and lettered his jr and sr year in football but was the baseball player of his time. Played in college and then played in the Reds organization for a short time.
But I personally thought that a kid Named John Franke was an ANIMAL! He played D-line in the 82-84 years and was a beast! He also wrestled and was awesome to watch. As a jr. high kid I was amazed at his work ethic and domination.
And for who cares, as a player at Longfellow we never lost a game from 7th to 9th. :gotigers:

One person that I coached and thought was a Great Tiger was Lee Hurst. He played baseball as a frosh and was not in the High school yet cause of the old setup. He was a tough QB and played hoops as well. He just seemed akward at everything, but to coach... he got it done on all "playing surfaces".

Kam, I know he was at Longfellow for some wins in that rivalry. From what I remember he was a good running backs coach. Those years in Massillon probably had to be my favorite. I would like to coach at the middle school someday.
On my husband's behalf, thank you Hack. He thinks highly of you, as do all Massillon fans:wink: Who knows, you two may end up coaching together eventually if he stays out there.
There were a lot of good kids who came up through both of the Jr. Highs during those years. The coaching staffs at both were exceptional....a great group of guys(and friends) who truely had the kids' best interests at heart and loved what they did.

I can tell you this from my senior year...starters and the jr hi they attended.
Defense first of course:
NG Longfellow sr
DT Longfellow sr
DT LA sr
E Longfellow sr
E Longfellow sr
LB Longfellow sr
LB Longfellow sr
CB Longfellow sr
CB Longfellow sr
SS Longfellow sr
FS Longfellow jr
Offense:
QB LA sr
FB LA sr
TB Longfellow sr
TE Longfellow sr ( i think he went to Long, I know he was a move in)
WR Longfellow sr
WR Longfellow sr
C LA sr
G Longfellow sr
G LA sr
T Longfellow sr
T Longfellow sr
1st off.....21 senior starters is pretty damn good. No one started both ways. 17 of 22 starters were from Longfellow. This was a playoff team as well. and I think it says a lot that 10 out of 11 defensive starters were from Longfellow especially when LA was suppose to be the "tough" school.

i believe a former tiger by the name of keith wade hit double digits in varsity letters earned. tremandous athlete for a kid of his size as he excelled at the varsity level in football, swimming and baseball.

i agree w/ TC on this one, probably need to keep the comparisons to 4-8 yr increments, too hard to compare generations, just like its hard to compare the 70 tigers to the 91 tigers ........... who had the most potential but never tapped into it ? I say Chris Roth from 1990.

NOT even close with that one. Sad to say but this is a long and distinguished list. I would even include the ones that had a great career at massillon and didnt take it to the next level (relford, i wish him well) as well as the ones who I thought could have been great but were content to be average.

Chris had one of the best stiff arms I've seen...30 yards to the end zone..1990 McKinley Game :rockin:

When I think of Roth that play comes to mind, awesome. Didnt Ramir have a heck of a catch on our sideline going toward the scoreboard in that game also?
Does anyone remember the bball game that year at jackson? REAL NICE.

Ramier's Sr. season would have been in 1989..Game was at Fawcett in which
we dominated..the catch you are thinking of came in the South end zone at
Fawcett and indeed was a spectacular catch one in which he out leaped two
defenders and came down in bounds :2thumbsup:

Listen, here PAL. I've been hanging out down here with The Hulkster and I've learned some moves with my steel chair. Now if I have to come up there and show you what I've learned I WILL. Otherwise you Poets are just what I said you were. Now come and get you some, Mister.
P.S. I DID like the head butt comment though. Pretty funny. Get him TC.

Crackerman--- CarlE and TC know full well that Longfellow was by far the better program!!! They are the only 2 people that cannot except that. Look at the overall records since the closing of Jones and Longfellow dominated from 83-89 easy and maybe longer! I was there from 83-86 and we went undefeated and won the city championship all 3 years at all grades--TOTAL DOMINATION!!!!! In a tag team match-- Crackerman-- you and I would destroy them!!!
TC---your head reminds me of wrestler "The Missing Link" and CarlE could be Jimmy "the mouth" Hart with all that smack he talks!!!!!! :jestera: LOL!!!!!

Longfellow was the KING of Stark County Football and LA was the patsy or cupcake on the schedule--- the most embarasing thing is we had to whoop on them twice in a season---so hardheaded and stubborn just like you and TC!!!!!!!!
