Where are the senior tigers going to play college ball next year. Many offers are still on the table while some kids will have to go Juco, prep or another route but schools are avaliable and ready to sign quality kids to their programs!!!!
Brian Gamble--- Illinois
Andrew Daily-- Penn State
Antonio Scassa--- Toledo or Dayton??? Still entertaining deals and decisions
Darion McGuire--- Toledo???? Still entertaining deals and decisions
Cody Colly--- baseball???
Trey Miller---Ivy league. Is football possible in future???
Bobby Huth---Baseball???
Emery Saunders??????? I have not heard anything
Mike Porrini---Western Carolina---Basketball
Anyone else on the team planning on playing sports at the next level??? Anyone else have any input or knowledge other than what's posted???? I know Darion has several DII oppurtunities but I am working on a deal right now!!! Just curious about the future of our young student/athletes and how everything is/has gone for them in planning for adulthood!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought I would get some posts concerning decisions, others who posters thought would want to play college ball, thought on where kids would play etc,.... I talk to recruiters everyday and I wonder is the word actually getting out like in the past about Massillon kids--I remember when we would get 5-7 DI deals each year. I know the talent is spread out and we have dripped in numbers form 10-20 years ago but the talent is still in tigertown!!

Cody told me he had no offers for college football.... he said he'd rather go for baseball but he was confused as to why he had no football offers.

I would tell him to go ask Coach Stacy. Offers just don't come in the mail, you need to sell yourself.

TC-- the player sells himself during games but the coach sells the players to Universities. Cody is undersized but was a big hitter and plays with heart and passion---I think he can play at some level in football!!! The best networking coaches get the most deals---ie: Coach Moronto could get a 2nd string 10/12 plays a game player into a DII school just because he kept people on his telephone. My soph and jr. year we put 16 players in DI with a combined 13-7 record!!!!!! Networking-- Cincinnati Withrow put 18 kids in school and cannot even make the playoffs because they're coach Doc Gamble makes sure if a player wants to play at the next level he does everything in his power to help the kid out. Itwas so many Ohio coaches in San Antonio for the All American game networking for players it was sick but the end result is kids in college---I really do not care about if they score TD's but more about that degree!!

A lot of these kids "sell" out every Friday night..I think in this case the coach
and staff should be doing some selling to get them into college..:deal:

Who would blame her. You see how much college costs? Winning a scholly would be like winning a lottery.
I agree w/ OTC TIGER. Actually, I cant think of ANY higher priority for a HC, or school administration in Massillon than helping kids get to college.
Colly & Scassa are perfect examples - COACHES get kids like that schollys or aid. Cory Shane is another guy I hope lands something. Saunders is a no-brainer aint he?

some people that we see as no brainers may not be no brainers to college coaches, its a shame this happens but a lot off the bigger schools ESP in D1 will recruit a kid just because of his size while they pass up on kids with a lot of talent but not quite the size, i don't know anything about emry saunders but some D1 schools might not see him as big enough to play at the D1 level, i am sure that he could easily land a D2 scholarship

2 complete scholarship deals and 2 partials pending! Things happen in cycles in recruiting--I didn't get my deal until March. After the 1st wave of players sign in Febuary then all the coaches will be back out trying to get the gets that are left. I feel confident that deals will come through soon. The kids who have qualified academiclly should be sitting pretty good--that's why I really am baffled that more DIaa and DII schools are not beating the door down before the 2nd wave of deals come aroundafter the initial signing date 2/7/2007. The High School head coaches play the biggest role in marketing the players to Universities before and after the season.
I have taken upon myself to market my brother and only rely on the staff to send out transcripts and film(I mailed out 30 DVD's myself) and have had some success--however Universites do not want to hear an x-player talk up his brother for a deal-- the coaches have to be proactive.
The NCAA Clearinghouse rules play a big part in if a player can even qualify for a DI or DII deal as well.

Monte, are you saying that Coach Stacy is not "selling" and networking to get his players in college?
monte81
01-17-2007, 03:30 PM
I a not saying that but would hope that the staff is doing everything in their power to get the kids in school. Telephone, fax, sending film--whatever it takes. Universities are not going to find every kid that can play--you have to bring the kids to the Universities. If they are great but if not--get to work!!!

One thing positive that you can say about Rick Shepas is, he worked extremely hard at getting kids placed in college.

I have also heard from a parent of a 2 year starter that they are dissappointed in the help they are getting to get there son into college. I really thought coach Stacy would be a big help in this area. Slider, out!!!

I think the problem is that we rely on the old school mentality that this is Massillon and the Universities will come see what we got and we dont have to contact them. In the 80's when we had Tim Manion, Spielman, Craig Johnsons, Duane Crenshaws, etc,... the big time colleges were in our weight room every week. IT was a plus having Sonny Spielman/Moronto around as the AD as well because he would call the Universities on the phone and they were there talking to us. When I played those individuals had opened the path for us and all we had to do was play--- but that was before the internet craze began. I talked to Doc Gamble(HC at Nati Withrow) Saturday during the Colts/Ravens game and he was at his office working on deals for his players. In today's recruiting world you have to start early--sending highlight films, game film, bios, and academic/athletic profiles for the kids no later than spring of junior year. College coaches I have talked to prefer to have a 5-7 minute highlight film and 2 game film as well as academic record(STUDY KIDS).
At Massillon I was told by the HC that he sends film out to universities that request film of a certain player which is the reverse of what college recruiters are telling me via phone. Colleges want coaches referrals and how do they get to see every high school player in the US--- they rely on film and what they get from the high schools. AD and BG did not start getting major DI attention until they started going to camps after soph season. All the kids cant afford U. of Miami, Michigan, PSU and elite camps---thats how all the kids are commiting early. Some elite camps are invitation only and again if they have not heard of you by film or coaches recomendation then they cannot attend. Stacy has the thoery of "overselling" which means he does not pursue schools for individuals. My thoery is sell all seniors who would like to TRY to continue playing to the next level!!!!! If schools that have half the talent and GPA's can get 4,5,6 or more DI's than I know with the right approach we can get a few more tigers into college each year!!!!
I am not questining the staff's efforts or approaches for those who will say Im bashing--- we asked the kids their opinions on the 2007 teams workouts lets ask the seniors do they feel they are getting the help they need or desire!! Honostly--- ALL players are not cut out for college football on the Big Ten, SEC Big East level but you have to mass market kids to all schools from DI to DIII, NAIA, JC, etc,... whatever talent level and academics will allow them to get!! But DO NOT under sell the kids by any means.
Parents can do some of this stuff if you have the $$$$$ but eventually the coach or coaches have to stand up for the player concering--talent, work ethic, and academics!!!!!
I think college coaches have different ways of doing things. I talked to several over the years and most of them told me that they recieve tons of film that is unsolicited. Several of those coaches told me unless they request the film they usually just end up in a box on the film room floor. It may be different in some of the smaller divisions.
By the way look at the current rivals top 100 list. Look at #88 and read how he did in the O/D All American bowl. He pulled a Travis and started classes in Austin Tuesday.

I dont think this coaching regime puts much if any work into looking for deals for guys that might not have the division 1 build. If your name is ***** ***** you have a college coach in every week to see you and the coaching staff takes care of all your stuff. However if you are not division 1 material you might as well do everything yourself if you want to keep playing. Shepas did an excellent job getting guys to the next level and consistently had smaller schools in looking at the guys that did not fit the d1 build. Coach Stacy needs to step up here and help these guys find a place to play.

Hack--I never send a film out without prior communication. I checked out your dude and alot of Five star recruits like to report early to get a jump on school and spring ball. Wells might see some action next fall at Texas!!!!
Chubby Tiger--- Part of the staffs job is to get kids deals if he really cares about the kids or just job security. As a tiger community we should definite ly care what emphasis the staff is putting into finding these kids colleges. I really do not care what level they can play on-- i balled at UC but my BA says Malone College but it never stops me from working!!! Red50go said it best when he stated that kids who have worked hard deserve the coaches to find a scholarship or financial aid needed to furhter their education.
I told Stacy straight that if the U. of Toledo package is the best Darion can get then WE are rolling with it and going to ball out for the 4/5 years and GRADUATE!!! He will get to eat good at training table and Travis and I will handle any finances he needs beyond the package but we are hoping that a DIaa or DII comes around with a better deal because he already has cleared NCAA eligibility for the academics and passed the ACT with a 21 score last year. Cody, Shane, Saunders, etc,... should have some interest from some schools!!!!! I dont know why things are so slow for our team but subpar programs are getting it done with no problem!!!!

One thing about this issue is that you need to get on a college's radar your junior year. Waiting until you are a senior is too late.

Paulik tore his rotar cuff in the preseason. They had him at QB and he actully roomed with my cousin Kyle Julian who plays o-line for Malone. He said Q is gonna come back next year.

All the negative about Shepis equals out in my opinion when you look at his record of helping his players get deals!! If anyone here really knows Shep--- he has been willing to take tigers to Waynsburg if no other deals come through for them---his own words to me last month about the seniors on the 2006 team!!!

I liked Shep a lot but I don't think Stacey is doing a bad job in this. Not everyone is a DI player. Since Stacy has been here Huffman Duke, James Illi, BG Illi, Dailey Penn State, Schott already has DI offers, Commeaux, Herring and Turner are almost all shoe ins for a DI offer if they keep up what they're doing. Scassa and McGuire are both being looked at by Toldeo as only one year starters. That is impressive when you only start one year and a DI school is considering you it's a huge honor. These were both awesome players this year and didn't get to start a year before because this is Massillon and we have many great players. I hope they both make it to UT earn scholly's and start it would be awesome for them the team and the community.
