It's nice to have a "big" man on the basketball team....

The 1973-74 Tiger team had TWO "big" men over 6' 7" (Ewing & Poth were the names, if my memory is correct) ... and the team was roughly .500 for the season and lost to Canton Lincoln quite early in the tournament. We got a new head coach the following year.

Patrick Ewing? I think it was Randy Rankl and Jeff Poth, Smitty. And yes, we were about .500 because we didn't have anything else and those guys were pretty one-dimensional if my feeble memory serves correctly!!

Play tough defense on GlenOak's guards, which Gamble & Porrini can do, and you stop GlenOak easy. They start 2 or 3 sophomores/freshman. Koufos will get his rebounds and easy points, but you need to limit his touches from the easy entry passes to the post.

In 73 - 74 we also had Jeff Vrotsos (Nicks son) and Ned Schaefer. They were both pretty good sized too.

I think Massillon needs to force the other starting four to beat them and not Frease. I say that because I vividly remember the first game from last year that Perry and Massillon played and Frease had 32 points in a 61-60 loss.

The more Massillon keeps the ball out of Koufos' hands, the better their chances for victory.

Massillon plays Glenoak tonight not Perry. Not quite sure what the Frease comments are about.

My apologies for that error. I was trying to make a reference to tonight's game and Massillon's importance to try and keep the ball out of Koufos' hands.

If GlenOak attempts to go 94 feet with Massillon, it will be to Massillon's advantage. I think the Tigers have the quicker and tougher basketball team than the Golden Eagles.

Our guards are very talented but a Total mismatch?? Storm Sanders the glen oak freshman is rated one of the best fr. point guards in the COUNTRY. He lived a few houses down from me in canton-- the kid was at the court everyday for the last three years i have seen him. He will be fun to watch in the guard matchups to see how the young kid responds to MP and BG all game. I look forward to the follow up report tomorrow.

Kenny Hawkins broke his foot his senior year and didn't play but 2 or 3 games
-- the starting lineup was , Jerome Myricks, Devray Kirkland, Gerold Pope, Charlie Pope and Craig York/David Wartley

Chris Roth and David Grimm were also teammates in 1989-91 but had had explosive Lonnie Harper to take the pressure off of them scoring.

Big Men in Massillon are usually wider and short --built for football. We hardly ever get players over 6'4" at the school who can actually play basketball.

Thanks, Al...

I remembered Jeff Poth, but wasn't 100% certain about Ewing. The BB coach's son was a soph or frosh that year and he was above-average height, too.

When is the FT issue going to be adressed other then the usual "we shoot 70-75% in practice, but just cant seem to make them during the game" EXCUSE. Although having mental toughness hasnt been a strength of a Tiger basketball team in over 10 years.

Thats a monster game---no disrespect to Koufos but he should perform at this level every game considering that he is 7'2"--- bet you will not see games like that at Value City Arena because kids will be skilled big men to contend with regularly!!!

No doubt MP is a proven warrior on the hoop court and a 4 year letterman but the freshman might be better than MP at the same stage!! I was just pointing out that the kid is good and never under estimates anybody. The only reason the kid is at Glenoak is because he can start now--- Storm is good friends with my daughter and dont be surprised if he plays for the bulldogs next season! His little brother is going to be good as well.

This was a devastating loss for Massillon in seeding terms. They have to beat Perry for sure or they will risk being the #4 seed...that could place them in the top bracket and I know this for sure: Canton McKinley again would be in the crosshairs and Massillon would rather be the #3 seed and be in the lower bracket rather than run into a peak Bulldogs program...that has been at their peak the last three years!!

OK let me touch on this subject in many ways.
#1) Storm is the real deal. I was not at the game last night, but last year Storm was the best player in Canton City Jr. High's by far.
#2) Storm will not be at McKinley next year as he came to GlenOak from Canton City for this year. He came to GlenOak because of his close relationship with TJ Sutton, another freshman that plays for Glenoak. (same TJ Sutton who's dad applied for the athletic diector job at Massillon last year and did not get it).
#3) I told a friend that Koufus would be good for 25 points and 15 boards because Massillon has no one even close to match up with him size wise.
#4) Koufus is special and he will do it at the next level because he is a big guy with a shooter's touch. He can drain 3's all day long. It has already been said by scouts, that if not for the new rules on kids going to college, he would of been a 1st round NBA pick this year comign out of high school.
#5) I was glad to see that Koufus did not get any cheap shots taken on him on this site. He is truly a great kid, who overcame a lot and busted his a$$ to become the player he is. I know this for a fact: For 4 straight years in the summer, GlenOak would go out for 2-a-days for football and they have an outdoor basketball court near the football practice field and he would shoot on the court the entire time the football team practiced, from like 7am until 3pm....and I mean the ENTIRE time. His mom is guidance counselor at the HS and his dad passed of cancer when he was a young teenager. He has the grades too. The kid overcame a lot and is first class all the way.
Too be honest, I am sure that many on here do not care, but the kid is a great kid and I just wanted to share his story, which is an incredible one. He deserves nothing but the best. He is the best "big man" to ever come out of this area and probably the state because of his versatility.

I hope your friend was not surprised by your prediction:doh2: .....With his size and skill, Koufus should average those type of numbers..............

Your right Chronic Tiger, with his size, he should average 25 & 15 every night, however, it's the way he gets his points. He's the best ATHLETIC big man I've ever seen in high school ball....guy has skills. Most big men at his age are dopey and still trying to grow into their bodies. Most of them just camp under the basket and make a living scoring on offensive rebounds. Koufos had his share of points this way, but also shooting 10-12 ft mid range shots, shooting a three, running the court twice after he gets defensive rebound, outletting to guard and then flying down the court to receive an alley-oop and his free three shooting his art, I think he was 12-14 at free throw line and shot was effortless...just flick of his wrist. Outstanding young boy.....he's a youth leader at Holy Trinity Church and my 8 year old daughter looks up to him very much..very respectful.
Why would anyone take shots at him...because that's the way society is nowadays.....name one successful person and people always have something to say negative...no one ever gives anyone any credit...oh well, that's a whole another thread.

Actually it was with my nephew I told it 2 who goes to Massillon, who said that Koufus would be facing too many double teams and wouldnt put up the numbers. After the demanding schedule the TIGERS have had and the way they caught up and held their own during that game, I am damn proud of them! Taking nothing away from the GLENOAK(correction thanks to Fyrewood)team, with having a superstar like this very talented Koufus kid, they should have buried us but they didn't. Massillon played one hell of a game and got nothing to hang their heads about.

I've seen them. No doubt they're solid. But they shouldn't be handed that championship trophy yet.

Koufos is a stud. But hasn't GlenOak lost three games this season? Anything can happen.

You act like people were calling him a stiff. He's obviously a great high school player. But predicting GlenOak could win the district is like saying Ohio State should win some games with Oden. They're obviously capable, but to hand them the state championship trophy before they earn it sounds like some of the posters in Cincinnati.
