...But Ohio State struck the first blow in its battle with Florida by stealing Daytona Beach defensive back James Scott out from under Gators coach Urban Meyer. According to an account in his hometown paper, Scott verbally committed to the Gators before reversing his field one week later.

"I prayed on it, and the more I thought about it the more I thought I was very comfortable with coach (Jim) Tressel, the school and the players at Ohio State," the 5-10, 163-pound Scott said.

Scott was listed by one recruiting Web site as the No. 8 defensive back in the country, but Crabtree thinks he's even better. "I think he'll be a great 'get' for the Buckeyes," he said.

Brian Rolle, a 5-10, 202-pound linebacker out of Immokalee, Fla., also is among Ohio State's 13 verbal commitments. Florida has gotten verbals from nearly twice as many players, but none from Ohio. The only Ohioan playing for the Gators is senior DeShawn Wynn, the team's leading rusher out of Cincinnati Reading.

"You would think they would have some success in Ohio if they wanted to," Crabtree said, referring to Meyer's Ohio ties as an Ashtabula native and former OSU assistant under Earle Bruce. "But there's no need for them to go to Ohio because there is so much talent in Florida and Georgia...
