"held without the knowledge of the athletes or their families."

How did they know to show up?

It seems the funds from this event are going to a pee-wee football organization. If the families of these players end up going to the game I wonder how it will be funded?

I bet they were beaten and dragged. That is pretty funny.

I guess that I can see where it may have been a surprise to both the athletes and the families (although it does seem to be a stretch). Friends trying to help the families out and surprise them. Good thing both players happened to be free that night. You know some people went just to meet the 2 football players. They would have been pretty upset had the players not shown up.

Whether this violates any NCAA rule or not, the players did nothing wrong. It was a fundraiser to send the parents of Pittman and Wells to the NC game. Even if they were there, as long as the money can be shown to help the parents get to AZ, there shouldn't be anything wrong with that.

I'm not commenting on this until I get the official response from the NCAA that these two are off the hook. I'm telling you, sports talk is having a FIELD DAY down here with this talking about what a cakewalk Florida will have if this comes to pass. Of course, the local genius on one of the stations says that Florida is going to win in a walk anyway so he comes up with the comment (and I paraphrase): Well, we'll see how good their Heisman-winning quarterback is NOW. I'm telling you, these 'necks down here are starting to piss me off.

There shouldn't, but where do you draw the line? I think that may be part of the problem. Should they be allowed to raise enough money at the dinner to pay for first class plane tickets, 5 star hotel, expensive dinners at fancy restaraunts, nights on the town etc? Or should they only be allowed to raise money for average hotels, average meals, etc?

I know it's tough. And the NCAA writes the rules to avoid those situations. There is a lot of room for corruption and stuff like that, but you would like to see parents being able to witness a moment in their kids lives' as big as the National Championship game.

Very true. It would be a shame for them to miss the game. If these parents do show up at the game all of a sudden, won't there be some who are suspicious of where the travel money came from?

I think it is a violation for the parents to take money which is why it was donated to a pee-wee football program.

I also would think that in planning such a big event they might think to check if it was legit.

Well, since I am not related to either and don't have the money to travel to Arizona on my own, I would gladly take the money off their hands.

Please don't get mad at me. I am doing this as a sacrafice so that our 2 runningbacks will remain eligible for the game. Sometimes you gotta take one for the team.

See, CarlE, you shouldn't have been so adamant about shoving Michigan aside. At least UM fans know how tough the Buckeyes are!!:ohno:

"The money instead was to go to local youth football organizations. But in a statement Thursday, organizers said the event lost money because of the cost of food and supplies."

This isn't good, imo. The article says around 100 people attended at $8 a person. So they should have raised around $800 (probably less depending on if that 100 person count includes the players/families who probably didn't pay). Is spaghetti that expensive that you would lose money?

If the people in charge honestly did lose money, imagine, if this was a legal fundraiser, how embarrassing after the event is over to tell the families that there is no money to help with the trip.

Something is a little fishy to me.

I couldnt agree more. They forgot to calculate the costs, they forgot to check if it was legal by NCAA standards, they forgot to tell the players and their families NOT to show up.

I can see where you're coming from. When checking their message board "Swamp Gas", http://mb21.scout.com/fufinsiderfrm5 their even mocking Script Ohio in a manner that shows how classless some of their fans are.
