Ol' Maurice was arrested after a scuffle with police during a traffic stop. He apparently had a loaded rifle and 3 loaded handguns in his SUV.

Claretts behavior since his days at OSU is NO surprise to anyone that knows him and his family. He was coddled from 8th grade when he was called "the next Heschel Walker" by Street and Smiths magazine thru his Freshman year at OSU. Thom McD, knew he was trouble as did the asst. coaches boosters, and fans of WGH, but they chose to do what so many others do. Praise the high profile athlete for his athletic abilities, while dismissing his continual questionable behavior. A very good source in the Youngstown area told me 6 years ago that Mo was more likely to spend more time in jail, then he would in football.

CarlE

That "very good source in Youngstown" also proved prophetic.

Mo didn't just have any rifle. He had what looked like an AK-47 assault rifle. He was ready to rumble. I'm anxious to hear what Jim Brown will say. I hope he doesn't call him an intelligent young man like he did Mo's previous legal issue.

Driving in Columbus with a high powered rifle(loaded), 3 hand guns(all loaded), a hatchet & wearing a bullet proof vest.

A half a bottle of Vodka in his belly & just time enough to drink the other half before OSU's first practice of the morning.

Could he have been going to practice? Did those cops stop something bigger then they know?

Carl - you are right but you missed my question. In reading the article in the Tribune, I don't believe the Warren paper coddled Clarret. I was simply asking LTFT why he made the statemeent he did.

He has totally fouled up is career and, more importantly, his life as I've been watching high school football more than twice the number of years you folks have been born and he was the greatest RB I have ever seen.

In fact, I don't believe OSU would have won the NC without him.

However, those are all moot points now as his future is ruined for many years to come.

TxTiger,

Unfortunately due to a knee injury on duty that was almost career ending (I completely tore my PCL ligament and my Medial Meniscus cartilage and was off duty for 10 months) and monetary issues with our team, after almost 4 years as a Tactical Medic, I no longer work as one. I was with the Western Stark County Special Tactics and Response Team or S.T.A.R.T. Team for short. Because of the aformentioned monetary problems the team has folded. There are talks of reforming it or just forming a Massillon team, but nothing has come together so far.

At one time I was told by my Orthopedic surgeon that I would probably never be able to work as a Firefighter/Paramedic/Tactical Medic again, but I wouldn't take what he said as the final word and after a lot of pain, hard work and physical therapy, I DID come back. Although I would have to wear a metal knee brace that goes from my shin to mid-thigh to do the TacMedic job again, if the team re-formed, I would do it again in a heartbeat...I guess I'm just an adrenaline junky LOL.

That's why I put the word hometown in quotes. He did play for Warren (Although he lists his mother's address in Youngstown as his home address).
I believe the Vindicator also initially went with the wire story. It was an observation, pure and simple. The arrest came at night and I'm sure that's all they could go with at the time. Just some food for thought though. If it had been a former Massillon athlete how do you think it would have covered in our local papers (especically by one local reporter)? It was more of an observation than anything else.

Hey, he makes it very clear he is from Youngstown and not Warren. Thank goodness!!

Part of me sides with Clarett and part of me doesn't. Let me explain my point.

On the bulletproof vest and guns: I know that Clarett has been the victim of unwarranted death threats and attacks. Believe me, I know what that is like, being threatened by Canton McKinley fans for my decision to further find my career aspirations in Massillon. My family at times were threatened also by the same fans of my alma mater (and I know which people were responsible too). I can side with Clarett here (though I don't approve of the gun usage). People can threaten Clarett's life and what not but would they be willing to do that to him in person? They wouldn't...not if they want to lose their life......

On his troubles: Most of what Clarett has done was started by himself and himself only. He's not the player who graduated with a 3.5 from Warren Harding and the 2001 Mr. Football as he was let alone winning a national title at OSU. Only Clarett and Clarett only can change his ways.

It's another saga in the world of Maurice Clarett......

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Maurice Clarett was ordered to have a mental health evaluation following a bizarre and violent encounter with police in which the former Ohio State football star was caught with four guns after a highway chase.

The judge delayed a trial set to begin Monday on previous charges in which the player is accused of holding up two people outside a bar on New Year's Day.

Judge David Fais ordered the evaluation against the wishes of Clarett and his attorneys, citing the events surrounding the arrest early Wednesday.

I think there is some weight to the whole issue concerning these young athletes leaving college so early. They can't possibly be mentally prepared or mature to handle that jump. There may possibly be the rare exception to the rule, I know, but overall, I still think that it is a bad idea. Too much too soon, of anything, can have an adverse effect on anyone.

Excellent article Kamd50. An excerpt:

"Wistfully, Clarett said of his life, “I have done nothing but run a football.” And: “I’m a young man going through stress. I’m a person who was scheduled to make millions and didn’t make them.”

Look in the mirror. The blame starts and ends with you.

Another excerpt:
"In Columbus, there is speculation that Clarett might have also feared for his safety because he owed money either to college boosters or to others who had bankrolled him on the expectation of a lucrative professional career. His lawyers are not dismissing that speculation. But there is no proof."

I would not be surprised if this were found to be true. He's allegedly been receiving "gifts" for years.

I think that M.C. could be suffering from what I'll call the Buster Douglasitis. You know, when something happens for either good or bad that changes your mind-set for the rest of your life. When mr. Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson, Mike was never the same again. Yes, he still won a few fights, but look at him now. His down-fall began with that uppercut that almost took his head off. Well, back in the day, there was a high school scrimage between Massilon and Warren. I was there. Mr. M.C. all everything, super star, took a hand off and started around the end. ALL OF A SUDDEN from nowhere (the uppercut), gentleman S.C. hit him. Stood him up (the five punch combo), and laid him OUT (the knockout). I don't think that he was hit that hard since. Yes he was good, but never the same. Look at him now. Maybe I'll call it Crableitis!:scratchchin:

I don't blame Mo at all for wearing a bullet proof vest and carrying loaded weapons on his journey to Bengals camp. Heck, if you're gonna enter crimbengal territory in search of employment your first priority is survival.
I hear Marvin Lewis was distraught when he learned that his next high profile criminal had a little run in with the law "prior" to becoming a Bengal!

It was not Italian mobsters but an Israeli mobster that Clarett was involved with in Ca during his time off from football after losing his suit with the NFL... Guess he was given a car and moeny and a place to live which he was to pay back with his NFL contract but he turned down guaranteed money from the Broncos and also Topps I believe in hopes of making more in incentives... But instead, he didnt practice, got cut, then was kicked out by Wacknein.... Supposedly he had death threats on him from the mob and was why he was carrying the guns and wearing the vest..... He is just simply an idiot.... He did have the ability and the chance to be something special.... I dont want to say that he has thrown his life away because there is always a chance (as long as you are alive) to change and make something of yourself... But he will never get back what he threw away as far as a college career, college education, and a NFL career......
