I must have seen 1000 college games by now, and I've seen some giant showdowns. But this 2006 game between #1 OSU and #2 Michigan is probably the best college football game I've ever seen.

All through the game, these two teams played with awesome intenisty. And though the Buckeye led by 11 to 14 points much of the game, the drama that unfolded near the end was nailbiting for both sides.

The score of 42-39 pretty much tells the story. Both teams played like champions. And that team to the north was good enough to be national champs in most seasons. Just not THIS season.

I realize that some will site the overtime affair between Miami and OSU in 2002 as the best game ever. But I think not. I think not simply because that game was not between us and our arch rivals. Also, THIS Buckeye team is better than either of those 2002 squads; and so is THIS Michigan bunch.

I don't think I've ever seen a better matchup game between college rivals. The intensity was off the scale. Like, what a buildup for about six weeks. No game in history was built up like that during the reglular season.

Final note: Don't expect such a game when OSU meets USC on January 8th. By comparision, it will seem tame.

TigerCarl,

i think we need a few years to put last week's game into its proper place in history, even among rivalry games. A few games come to mind: Oklahoma-Nebraska in '71, Notre Dame/Michigan State in '66.

this may not have been the greatest OSU-Michigan game ever- Several had the same ramifications as well as excitement- '54, '70, '73, '02.

Still, nothing in the college ranks tops Massillon-McKinley in '74!

I was fortunate to get to go to this game. It was by far the greatest sporting event I have ever been to in my life. But it was not the best game. If anything, I'd vote the '05 or '02 game ahead of this one.

That game between Texas and Notre Dame has to ranked up there also.

It was probably in the 60s or 70s. Texas used the wishbone against Ara P.

Final was 29 to 28 in favor of Texas. That was the year JoePa passed on Texas and played a tough Missouri team for a 7-3 win and then whinned about not being national champs. They averaged 2.2 yard a play against that tough Missouri defense.

You older guys should remember that one. It was really a classic

TigerBill- Are you talking about the 1970 Cotton Bowl, where Texas came from behind in the last minute or so to beat the Irish 21-17? This was after Nixon named Texas "national champs" after they came from behind to beat Arkansas 15-14. Of course, Texas AND Penn State would be staring up at OSU had Bo not beat Woody 24-12 in one of the most stunning upsets of all time.

I think the following year, ND ended Texas' long winning streak in the Cotton Bowl 24-11.

I think the 2002 OSU-Miami game was the greatest college game ever. This year's OSU-Michigan game was good, but the high scoring and turnovers cheapened the quality of the game for me.

Not to split hairs TC....but in that Fiesta Bowl Miami had five turnovers and I think OSU had one. Still the best college game ever, though.

Im not a fan of either team, but the BC vs Miami, FLUTIE Hail Mary game has gotta be one of the best ever nominees too.

Your right, but also because of the fact that the Buckeyes were 14 point dogs made it even better. This year's OSU-Michigan game was so hyped (and should have been) that it seemed that both teams better play well or else.

No one has mentioned the 1990 Florida Citrus Bowl. Georgia Tech hammered Nebraska 42-21 to win the National Championship.

Not for anyone to hammer me for it including Louisville, but the Liberty Bowl 2 years ago with Louisville and Boise State was a tremendous game, back and forth with Louisville not being able to put Boise away until the end. The Hawaii-Michigan State game from 2 years ago was another classic that unfortunatly had a blackeye surrounding it because of the fight that ensued after the game. Texas-USC game last year was a very good one as well. Remember, the OSU-Michigan game was essentially an 11 point game pretty much all the way, with OSU having several attempts to make it 18. Louisville-Miami from 04 was great as well.
I would rank the 5 as follows for the past 3 or 4 years:
1. USC-Texas last year. Most overall talent ever in one game
2. Louisville-Boise Liberty Bowl
3. Louisville-Miami 04
4. OSU- Michigan 06
5. Hawaii-Michigan State 04?

I know I am missing others, and if I go back even further you can add the 03 LSU-Kentucky game, the Flutie game, the Colorado-Michigan game (Kordell's hail mary).

Crackerman,

You know...I'll never forgive Kordell Stewart for that Hail Mary...actually I did forgive him when he was leading the Steelers and reached the peak of his Pittsburgh career in 2001 by leading the dominating Steelers past the Baltimore Ravens 27-10 in an AFC Divisional Playoff before faltering terribly in a 24-17 AFC title game loss to New England, that effectively ended his Pittsburgh career.

It would be five long years before the Steelers found a quarterback to take them to the top...............

And as for Kordell...to me he's nothing but an afterthought............

1 play doesn't make a great game, but I will agree that last year's Texas-USC Champinship was a great one also. There was some serious talent, and some great plays. As a matter of fact, I bet either team could have beaten last years 49'ers.

your right, but all 3 of those games were great games with dramatic finishes. They would of been great games with out the heroics

To Tigervic, I was talking acout the 1970 Cotton Bowl game but apparently time has done a number on my memory. I would have bet my life it was 29-28 and I spent all evening a week or so back to justify my score. I was even wrong on the PSU-Mo score. It was 10-3 not 7-3.

I remember discussing the game the next day at work. There was a very questionable call in favor of Texas and that probably enabled Texas to win.

That was 35 years ago and I was trying to figure where the 29-28 score came from. Perhaps 7 years later OSU and OU played with the Sooners winning and that was their score.

I had to laugh, though, there was a lot of criticism of Joepa whinning and crying about not getting the championship. Some things you never forget.

Guys, except for Warren1st and he's got me by at least 25 years, there
probably not TOO many older than me on here so please give me a pass on this. It is strange what time does to your memory.

Cheers Tigerbill

PS, It was listed as a classic so I was at least right about that
