View Full Version : New bar in town

I drove past the former Handlebars and Hotrods/Scorchers location yesterday and saw a lot of work being done. Now I know why. They're scrambling to open The Whiskey Ranch tomorrow (the night before Thanksgiving is typically very busy in the bar business). As I drove by, I said "is that a mechanical bull?" Apparently it's a country/rock theme environment and there's one in the Akron area.

The web-site shows a fairly young, fairly attractive cowgirl riding a mechanical bull. If that's going to be the focus of their marketing it may last for awhile. Or atleast until they run out of fairly young, fairly attractive cowgirls that don't have back problems!

Every dumb-ass that has tried to run a bar at this location has made the same two dumb-ass mistakes.

If these guys follow the pattern they will be gone also.

Dear Whiskey Ranch Owners:

This is Massillon, not Chicago or New York.
When we are in a club, we do not like to be on display. Cover the windows or we won't come in.
On the same track, when you are having a slow night people will drive by and see that no one is in there and go somewhere else.

Secondly, in Massillon when we want to order a drink we want a GD drink and NOW. Hire enough bar help and teach them to hustle and not stand around chatting. If you hire floor help tell them that they are there to hustle drinks not be visiting their friends.

As much as I dislike BW3, I have to say that when you want a drink in there you can get one.

Take note new business in Massillon owners or you won't last either!!!!

As for my comments, I AM giving them a chance because I am giving them some good advice.

They are out of towners just like the last several owners and I thought maybe some knowledge about Massillon might help them.

I thought the reason why Handlebars closed down was due to a dispute with the owners of the building over rent owed. Also, wasn't it said that the owners wanted to sell the building as another reason for Handlebars having to move out as well? With the block being closed off every weekend evening for parking to accomodate all of the bikes downtown, it seemed that they were doing a fairly decent business.

Years ago, there was a bar down on Erie that was basically a country western type of place. They had one of those mechanical bulls and had a lot of live entertainment. Eventually they removed the bull and exchanged hands, I dont know why. It did a really good business but became a very rowdy place with lots of fights which contributed to it closing down among other reasons. Hope this place works out for owners and patrons alike. It sounds like it will be a fun place if managed properly.

I won't patronize a bar that has a cover charge and NO BAND... (or, at least a free hors d'ouvers-bar or something.)

... like, what's the cover charge for, anyway, if there's not a band? The price of the drinks are jacked either way. If the place can't survive on $2.50 beers and $4 (and up) drinks, something is wrong.

whiskey ranch (formerlly known as the saddle ranch) in akron is a huge hit and a great place to go. Only problem might be that it is more suited towards college kids and a college town. It will do great over breaks when the college kids are home, but night in night out, i think it will struggle. I hope it works though.

Two very good posts in this thread...posts of wisdom.

The Nemesis makes some sound suggestions. Cover the glass and get me my beer when I want my beer...not at your own convenience. I hate having to beg somebody to allow me to spend my money.

It wont go without quality bands....but they will have to make up their minds. Is it a C@W bar or a Dance Rock bar? $3 cover on a Saturday night for a Country band is the going rate in the Summit-Stark area.

And CarlE's idea of a dry run tonight at Bw3 is a great idea...but only if the dry run is not dry.

Their location in Akron apparently does good business. I haven't heard about the others. Here are my opinions and observations:

First the positives...
"The Whiskey Ranch expanded the dance floor to about 2,000 square feet"
-Have you seen what passes for a dance floor at many places in the area? Try dancing on the postage stamp they call a dance floor at the Pub sometime.

"Everson believes that, unlike past occupants, the bar has a good chance of becoming a mainstay in the downtown since Milkovich and his brother own the building."
-They have a larger stake than just being a renter. Hopefully it will lead to a greater committment to making it work.

-The previous occupants (at least initially) tried to be open every night. With a limited at best food menu you're not drawing anyone on a Monday or Tuesday night. Being open Thur-Sat should help.

Now the negatives...
-I do question whether a cover charge will work long term, especially when someone can walk a short distance to the Alibi, Benders or BW3 with no cover. The mechanical bull will be a draw for first timers, but service and overall atmosphere will be a key over the long haul. Put me with those who hate standing in line forever for a $4 beer.

-I too am not a fan of the windows. They don't serve a purpose. The view of that intersection is not appealing. If they're slow that night, anyone driving by will know it and not bother stopping in. And I've also heard people say when police parked outside (looking in) it makes them uncomfortable.

I'm willing to give it a shot.

A cover charge tends to keep the riff raff out.

I dj'ed in bars and clubs for several years (Hey I had to offset the pittance of a paycheck from WTIG somehow). When alcohol is involved you're going to have an occasional problem. But the bars playing rap and dance music attract more of a "trouble element." From my experience it was many people just loitering, not even buying drinks. A cover charge may help somewhat, as long as it doesn't alienate your target audience.

You should have seen some of the places I worked. Quite scary when I look back on it.

“ 'It needs a lot of cosmetics,' Milkovich said of the 43,000-square-foot building, which has marble stairways and oak doorways. 'Structurally, the building’s got really great bones to it. It’s going to be a great project.'
There are currently five tenants in the building, but most of it is vacant – including the gutted fifth floor."

If someone has the money needed, the building does have some charm. But it's in bad shape. Before they locked the main entrance doors, vagrants hung out in the stairwell (I had taken the stairs because the elevator sounded like it was going to die with each trip). The rooms are heated by old steam radiators. The fifth floor was initially gutted and was supposed to house offices, but it never happened.

It was called the country comfort ; which then became a Heavy metal club ( I dont remeber the name) but I remeber Ronnie James Dio came to do a show, saw the condition the club was in and decided to leave.

The bar owner was chasing the bus and screaming. That was the most amusement I had at that location in some time.

Massillon used to have a country themed bar downtown with a mechanical bull about 10 or 12 years ago, called "Country Comfort". We used to go there to ride the bull once in a while. Also, there were plenty of "young, attractive cowgirls" who showed up every week to ride the bull on slow speed so they could try and look like Debra Winger in Urban Cowgirl...lol (Of course, if they ran the bull on the speed that an actual bull would go, I doubt any of them would last two seconds.)

They always had good bands and a decent crowd, but they eventually closed down, so I don't think having a mechanical bull is going to keep the new place open. Patrons spending lots of money are what keep a bar up and running.

"We’re going to have more of a presence there. We’re going to step up road patrols and schedule more walk-through visits by patrolmen."

And we're paying for that, are we? The city should send them a bill for the additional manpower required to police the place. And put such an oppressive police presence there that people think twice about even going.

Kamd50
01-13-2007, 05:43 PM
What the heck is wrong with people in Massillon? The police do not need to be walking through a place "policing" it. That is not what they are paid for. If there is some trouble and they are needed then someone from the establishment should call them up. I guess if their objective is to just shut the place down, that's one way to go about it. There are fights and brawls at The Village and The Elbow Room on a weekly basis and has been for years. Why don't they go and patrol those places?:wall:

There are fights and brawls at The Village and The Elbow Room on a weekly basis and has been for years. Why don't they go and patrol those places?
Hey! What's wrong with The Village and The Elbow Room?

True stories:
- The last time I was in the Elbow Room was about 3 or 4 years. It was in the middle of the afternoon on a mid-week summer day. A buddy of mine and I happened to drive by, and we hadn't been there in years, so... We finished our beers and headed for the door. Another patron got there first and walked out ahead of us. He took about 3 steps out, stopped between the two cars parked in front of the door, put one hand on the fender of each, and let fly. Nothing like projectile vomiting on a sunny afternoon. He wiped his mouth on his arm, turned around, nodded to us, and walked back in.
- The last time I was in The Village was about a year ago. I was leaned against the bar, drinking a beer, and watching my cohort work his wiles on some of the toothless local talent. A dimensionally blessed young lady walked up to me and said, "Kiss me like you mean it." Ever the glib sort, I said, "WTF?" She said, "I slept with that guy over there last week, and he hasn't called me since. I want to [tick] him off."

Actually, places like The Village and The Elbow Room serve a very beneficial purpose: they give "those" people somewhere to go and keep them out of the places I frequent. I prefer to represent the low end of the social spectrum when I go out, and I would not welcome the competition.
